We look forward to welcoming you, your family, and your friends to Israel Congregation of Manchester. MEMBERS MAY ORDER GUEST TICKETS AT THE FAMILY & FRIENDS RATE From the Rabbi ur turning of the season in Vermont O gives us an opportunity to check in with one another as we and our guests come to ICM for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. There are always many reasons to come to ICM for these services, especially that we welcome back our enormously talented cantor Lindsay Kopecky for her fourth year with us. Those of you who have heard and will hear Cantor Kopecky will be moved by her amazing voice. This year Iʹm pleased to share with you the topics for this yearʹs sermons. On Erev Rosh Hashanah the sermon is called, ʺItʹs Not Your Fatherʹs Oldsmobile.ʺ Rosh Hashanah Day One will feature a sermon called, ʺRemembering as an Action Verb.ʺ Kol Nidre eveningʹs sermon will be ʺTeshuvah as Self Awareness.ʺ Yom Kippur morning will feature an update on Israel and the Middle East in what has been another tumultuous year for the region. I hope to see you at ICM for these sermons and for all that we offer our communities. May you and all you love find blessings in the new year for all that is good and holy. Rabbi David Novak. HIGH HOLY DAY SCHEDULE PAGE 3 Rabbi David Novak is pleased to welcome back to the bima Cantor Lindsay Kopecky. We are alive, we are happy, we are growing, we are vibrant! Your new board is working diligently to make all facets of temple life bigger and better, and it is working. New people doing new things make ICM a new, better, and more involved congregation. Friday evening Shabbat services have a new look: We start with a wine and cheese pre neg a great time to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. We are treated to speakers, music, and other surprises to accompany Rabbi Novak s timely and thought provoking sermons. After services, our Common Table community dinners make this a Shabbat evening home for our congregation family. We provide main dishes with different themes each week, and many congregants participate by cooking their favorite dishes to round out each wonderful Shabbat evening. Attendance has increased dramatically and congregants come in smiling and leave happy and spiritually fulfilled. We have created an excellent Tot Shabbat program that has been drawing new, younger continued on page 5

4 Page 4 Fine Arts & Food Festival T reat your senses to the Fine Arts and Food Festival at ICM on Sunday, November 11 from 10am to 4pm. Smell the delightful aromas of traditional Jewish cooking in our demonstration kitchen. Taste yummy treats and home baked goodies. See fine arts and crafts for holiday giftgiving (or your own pleasure). Touch delicate fabrics and finely crafted quilts. Hear the joyous sounds of community coming together to explore our five senses at this special ICM extravaganza! We ve expanded last year s crafts and arts festival to include the wonderful world of foods, explains Lynne Abcug, a member of ICM s Programming Committee and chair of the event. In addition to a broader array of local crafters and fine artisans, we re adding local gourmet foods along with cooking demonstrations that will focus on Jewish favorites and healthy eating recipes. As we all know, Israel Congregation is home to some pretty talented congregants who have expanded their networks to include family and friends who are equally talented. With more than 20 vendor tables, there will be tremendous variety, including a wide range of price points. Since this event takes place one month before Chanukah, be sure to shop at our holiday table that will be filled with decorating and gift giving items. And stop at our in house bookstore that, in cooperation with the Northshire Bookstore, will offer an array of Jewish themed books for children. Admission to the Festival is free. College Connections W e like to keep in touch with our collegeaged congregants and let them know the members of Israel Congregation are thinking of them. If you have an ICM Family Membership and have a child in college, send his/her school mailing address to office@icmvt.org and we will send your child a Thinking of You gift for the High Holy Days and Pesach (Passover). Please send addresses by September 10 to ensure delivery of High Holy Days gifts. To help prepare and ship the gifts, please contact Karen Dreiblatt in our office at or office@icmvt.org. BOOKNOTES I CM is blessed with a large number of very talented congregants who work with fabric, clay, wood, paint and yes, words. One such person is Nancy Ellis Horowitz. Nancy is the author of a new novel that takes readers from southern Vermont to a city so crammed with people and noise and smells that it could only be Bombay. IN THE LAST DAYS OF BOMBAY follows the romance of Maggie Albrecht, an expat from Boston working as a marketing director, and Neel Wagley a local son of Bombay who works in the kind of fast paced ad agency that almost defines the current very hip, new India. Their romance, their successes and failures, take readers on a wild journey. In a phone conversation with Nancy, she freely discussed the many lives and shapes that the novel has been through, each version delving deeper into Maggie and Neel s characters. Notable as well are the descriptions of the city, which becomes almost a character in the novel. She also laughingly talks about the rejection letters which made it easy to continue working on the novel, since they were filled with praise. I was enveloped into Bombay to the point where I could almost smell the chai and the spices *; she did a beautiful job of setting the scene and making it come alive. **; Horowitz does a find job of capturing the atmosphere of Bombay, from its business culture to its tony expatriate clubs to its bustling streets. *** Nancy has served as Creative Director in several major advertising agencies, a career which took her from New York City to London, Bombay, Sydney, and back again. She currently lives in NYC with her daughter Phoebe and soon to be husband, Jeff Yates. She visits her parents Bob and Micki Horowitz in Vermont frequently. IN THE LAST DAYS OF BOMBAY is available from Northshire Books, in the store or online, and of course, in the ICM library. * Source Books ** Grand Cenral Books ***Little, Brown & Co. 5 Fundraising Fun Begins ICM NEEDS YOU... to participate in our upcoming fundraising events. You can attend all or one, but please plan on supporting at least one of the exciting events we have planned for our first fundraising season. The Fundraising Committee is comprised of congregants whose common goal is to bring our Israel Congregation Community together in friendship, while raising funds to keep our wonderful synagogue moving forward. It is our hope that congregants will attend the Moveable Feast on October 13, the 50ʹs Valentineʹs Sock Hop, participate in our silent/live auctions, and just come together to make our ICM family stronger. There will be other ways to support our fundraising efforts so please keep your eyes peeled to learn about some innovative and interesting concepts. We are so thankful for our ʹsynagogue familyʹ and want to be sure we thrive. Lynne Abcug For a schedule of classes and to see information on our teachers, please visit our website.
