The kids sat on the bimah for much of service and had a blast waving their groggers. The week before, the kids made hamantashen for the celebration. After the service we all ate gobs of hamantashen and danced to sounds of the klezmer band! As always, Hebrew School charges along. The younger class has learned 17 Hebrew letters of the aleph-bet! Alison does a wonderful job playing games, reading stories and doing craft projects that help the kids remember their letters and the new Hebrew words they are learning. In the rabbi s class, Guv and Talulah are continuing to learn prayers in Hebrew, in context with how they are done and what they mean. They regularly balance out the book learning with short conversation, games, and learning how to count in Hebrew. April brings Passover, and Alison Hill orchestrated a terrific Tot Shabbat for the kids to explore Pesach. They reenacted the exodus from Egypt, each taking turns as Moses leading the Israelites (around the synagogue) out of Egypt and parting the sea. Afterwards the kids made seder plates and shared in kiddush. It was a beautiful day and all the kids ran around outside and played on the jungle gym while the parents kibbitzed until lunchtime! A MOVEABLE FEAST RETURNS Saturday, August 20 at 5:30 pm
2 Cantor-in-Residence I am delighted to share that Cantor Jeff Warschauer has been chosen to be Israel Congregation s Cantor-in-Residence. Cantor Warschauer, an ordinee of the H.L. Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, will be here for his first weekend on Friday, May 20. This Friday night service will also feature a D var Torah by our own Rosalie Fox, as well as participation of ICM congregants Lee Fox, Lisa and Jonathan Prial and Cookie and Israel Mac. We are looking forward to welcoming Cantor Warschauer here on an ongoing basis you will always know when he is coming through the our weekly The Week Ahead and Beyond at ICM and our Facebook page. I hope that you will make a special point of being here. You may recall that the Music Fund was greatly expanded this winter through a generous matching challenge of June Azoulay that was met by a number of our congregants. These funds were added to those already raised to give us a musical lift for our worship going forward. On another note, we are actively searching for a cantorial student, soloist, or cantor for the High Holy Days, which this year begin on October 3. Word of the position is being advertised widely. I hope that by the next Shofar I will be able to share with you who it will be. Music so enhances our prayer experiences. We are fortunate to be beginning this relationship with Cantor Warschauer which we hope will once again remind us all why ICM is such a special place in the Northshire. Rabbi David Novak LifeLong Learning Update Page 2 We are very pleased to confirm the dates and information for our programs for the summer of Wednesday, June 29-7:00 pm Ernestine Bradley - German Roots to an American Life: The Impact of the Shoah Ms. Bradley will introduce a short film, Torte Bluma, followed by a discussion on the film and her personal journey. Ms. Bradley is a professor of comparative literature, the exspouse of former Senator Bill Bradley, daughter of Nazi pilot in Germany, and author of The Way Home: A German Childhood. Sunday, July 3 - following our Independence Day barbeque Performance by the Northeast Friendship Caravan (Israel Scouts). The Tzofim Friendship Caravan was founded in 1973 to bring groups of artistic and talented performing arts students from Israel to the United States carrying a message of hope and peace. This is a return performance for the Caravan and we are looking forward to seeing them again! Friday, August 5-5:5 pm Scholar-in-Residence Weekend - Mark Weitzman, Director of Government Affairs and the Director of the Task Force against Hate and Terrorism for the Simon Wiesenthal Center has graciously accepted our request to share his knowledge with us. Shabbat Services will be followed by dinner and discussion. Mr. Weitzman s topic will be "Anti-Semitism in America: From Past to Present. Sunday, August 7-10:00 am Lox, Bagels and Lecture - Mr. Weitzman will lead a lecture and discussion entitled The Refugee Crisis and the Rise of the European Far Right. Stay tuned for the possibility of more scholarly conversations in the early fall.
3 Tikkun ha Nefesh May is a busy month for our ICM community. It is the month that we staff the Community Food Cupboard and the canteen for the Blood Drive. Historically, our involvement in these two projects has been strong and there is still time to volunteer. The Blood Drive takes place on Wednesday, May and Barbara Pepper is the person to contact if you can help. She can be reached at or pepperssix@yahoo.com. The Food Cupboard could use your help on Wednesdays or Thursdays. Reach out to Micki Lisman at or msloane.esq@mindspring.com or Judy Hirschberg at or judyhirschberg@yahoo.com to volunteer for a shift. Rosalie Fox, Morgan Taylor, Alison Hill and our Hebrew School students have been busy planning a program in cooperation with Second Chance Animal Shelter for Sunday, May 22. See more details in the article beside this one. Jonathan Prial has been working with Vermont Reading Partners to see how we can better serve our community, especially in the mountain towns. You will be hearing more about this as we plan to have a speaker at an upcoming Friday service. Some of our members have been spending (and enjoying!) their time at the Habitat for Humanity Store. You do not need any retail experience to volunteer. Contact Elinor Katz at or elkaart@gmail.com if you d like to assist. Each month, Tikkun ha Nefesh will request donations of items for our community service partners. In May, we are looking for old bedding, blankets and towels for the animals at Second Chance. There will be a collection basket in the coat room. Animal Care Program for Children on May 22 Page 3 Young children and their parents are invited to ICM for a special program on animal care, to be conducted by Second Chance Animal Center, at 2:00 pm on Sunday, May 22. Entitled Caring for our Four- Legged Friends, this interactive, hands-on program will focus on ways to keep small animals safe, healthy and happy in the home and about town. (Cute cats will be there, too!) We want to bring young families into our welcoming house of worship as we support an important community service, states Morgan Taylor, ICM congregant, whose two sons (ages three and five) are animal lovers. Helping our children learn how to care for their animal companions should help them expand their compassion to all living creatures, whether domesticated or in the wild. Through this and other future programs to support Second Chance, we ll be engaging families with youngsters into our vision for a more just world, says Nancy Landis, chair of our Tikkun ha Nefesh committee. At the conclusion of the one hour program, juice and healthy snacks will be provided. ICM s Annual Meeting is on Sunday, May 15 at 10:00 am. Join fellow congregants and hear about what s happening at ICM. Vote on the budget and board members. Bagels and beverages will be served at 9:30. We look forward to seeing you all!
4 Share Shabbat with Friends from Keruv On Friday, May 13, we look forward to a joint lay-led service with our friends from Keruv. We welcome Shabbat with our regular 5:5 preneg. Keruv is providing a 6:00 pm dinner for the children. David and Marlene Skulnik are sponsoring dinner In Honor of Friendship. Please bring a vegetarian dish to share. Yom HaShoah Memorial Please join us on Wednesday, May at 7:00 pm for a memorial to the Shoah and words of memory by congregant Israel Mac. Israel will speak about his family s experience in Poland during the Shoah. Adult Education Page Our adult education class topic Loving the Prayers: Exploring Jewish Liturgy continues. We are using a text for this, Mishkan T filah: The Journal Edition, which is your own prayer book in which to write your thoughts. Class attendees are very much enjoying what they are learning. Even if you have not been part of this class from the beginning, you are invited to sit in and participate in our discussions. Rabbi Novak conducts adult education on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 at ICM. There will not be any class held on May 10, 17, 2, or 31. Class resumes on June 7. Condolences Lana Hauben on the loss of her husband, Ben Hauben. Sandy Castelbaum on the loss of her husband, Dr. Martin Castelbaum. Annual Independence Day Barbecue - Including the Return of the Israeli Scouts! Sunday, July 3 at 5:00 pm Come for great food, camaraderie, fun, our Fifth Annual Baked Goods Auction, and the fabulous Israeli Scouts. More information to follow; please save the date and get your recipes ready. Questions: Russell or Sheila Mills at russellmillsvt@gmail.com or mills@sover.net. Note: Manchester s fireworks will be lit on Saturday, July 2. Remember Loved Ones in Yizkor Book of Remembrance Given the enthusiastic response over the past two years to ICM's Book of Remembrance, we'll be expanding and enriching this professionally prepared booklet that honors our dearly departed family and friends. On Yom Kippur day (October 12), before the Yizkor service, those who placed tributes will receive their copies; if Book of Remembrance participants are unable to worship with us that day, they will find their copies in the ICM office. In June, we'll be sending out tribute forms that will ask for the names, photos (optional) and wording (optional) that express the essence of those who live on in our hearts and minds. We welcome participation by congregants and non-congregants alike! If you have any questions before then, please feel free to contact Lisa Bendik, our administrator, at
