I should know since the surgery in January I live in the moment. Each and every moment is all that I have. Yesterday is gone itʹs happened and will never happen again. Tomorrow is still the future. That leaves me with the right now, the here and now, this moment. Realizing agency is what makes this journey I am on peaceful. One way I added to my sense of presence was researching what exactly happened. When did it happen? What did they (surgeon) find? How much was there? Another path toward empowerment is how the community is carrying me through this, with love, compassion, and genuine concern. Encouraging me to continue working complements this sense of empowerment. So I ask you: what allows you to feel empowered (note: as opposed to ʺin controlʺ continued on page 6 Celebrate Shavuot P lease join us on Tuesday evening, May 18 at 7 p.m. for a study session in honor of Shavout, the time that the rabbis ascribe for our people receiving the Torah. There will be something wonderful and interesting to discuss and study together, so keep your eyes open for details in the Refrigerator Page. On May 19 at 9:30 a.m. we will have Shavout services in the sanctuary, featuring the Festival Amidah, Hallel, a special Torah portion, and a Yizkor memorial service at approximately 11 a.m. All are warmly welcomed and encouraged to attend. 2nd Annual Afternoon Musicale The Ties That Bind II: Find Your Inner Klezmer I srael Congregation and the Manchester Music Festival will present their second jointly sponsored concert and social hour, The Ties That Bind II: Finding Your Inner Klezmer on May 23 at 3 pm, in our sanctuary. This very special afternoon will offer the entire community an opportunity to immerse themselves in this unique program which may resonate in a special way with ICM congregants. Ari Rudiakov, artistic director of the Manchester Music Festival, tells us, The word klezmer is derived from two words that together mean instrument of song, and the music is identified by its characteristically expressive melodies, reminiscent of the human voice, complete with weeping and laughing. The concert presents acclaimed classical performers Marissa Byers (clarinet); Joana Genova (violin); Ron Feldman (cello); and Yashar David Yaslowitz (piano). The program includes Trio on Hebrew Themes by Jacob Weinberg; Chassidic Dance by Abraham Edelstein; Simchas Torah by Ernest Bloch; and Chamber Suite from Gimpel the Fool by David Schiff. Since last year s concert had standingroom only, music lovers are urged to reserve their seats as soon as possible. Tickets are $35 each, with a limited number available for high school music students at $10. Please make reservations by calling Karen at ICM at Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. for general admission seating.

3 President s Perspective O ver the past two years as your president, I ve shared some thoughts and some research with you dealing with a variety of subjects that were of interest to me and, I hope, of interest to you as well. As you read this article, I will have succeeded to what some regard as the most sought after position in Jewish communal life, that of Immediate Past President. No longer will there be publication deadlines to meet, announcements to be made at services, speeches and greetings to be given on High Holidays and other special occasions, agendas to prepare or meetings over which to preside. Sounds like Nirvana, doesn t it? But there are still goals to reach for, objectives to facilitate, and satisfactions to achieve, many of which relate to and are dependent upon the financial health and stability of Israel Congregation. In pondering this question, I became interested in looking at what our ancestors accepted as their obligation to support the institutions which impacted on their daily lives the Priests (the Kohanim and the Leviim) and the Temple itself all supported by the practice of tithing. A tithe is a one tenth part of the fruits of one s labor, usually paid as a voluntary contribution or as a tax or levy to support a religious organization. The concept of tithing in Judaism derives its origin from references in Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy which established a seven year cycle for the giving of agricultural products to the Leviim to enable them to conduct the affairs of the Tabernacle and to perform their additional duties as teachers and as administrators of the civil society. The Leviim, in turn were to give one tenth of what they received to the Kohanim for their support. There were rules established for when the tithe offerings were to be brought to Jerusalem as well as rules as to when agricultural products could be converted to coin. A general concept developed that the tithe should consist of onetenth of the increase in one s assets as opposed to onetenth of one s total assets. This system of voluntary support for the Temple and for the priests who carried out the mandated rituals enabled the functioning of the religious and civil life of the community for several hundred years. However, with the destruction of the second Temple and the dispersal of the priestly class, the concept of tithing was no longer a necessity. The transition to the Rabbinic era in Jewish life witnessed the creation Page 3 of communal synagogues in every area where Jews settled. As products of 20 th and 21 st century Judaism, most of us are familiar with the process that has developed to support Jewish religious institutions; a process which principally involves membership dues augmented by free will offerings, usually solicited and made in conjunction with the High Holidays. We are all painfully aware of the inadequacy of membership dues being able to support the operation of the synagogue and the many functions it performs in the community. Recent events have shown us that in difficult economic times, there is a diminished ability or motivation to be as forthcoming with free will offerings as might otherwise be the case in better times. There is thus created an artificial ebb and flow in the religious life of a community, a phenomenon that tends to reverse the needs and priorities of the community and the resources available to fill those needs. We at Israel Congregation have not been immune from this economic ebb and flow and the roller coaster effect it can have on the community. In the past, we have indeed been blessed with members who have undertaken significant leadership roles in producing the broad financial support which enabled us to create our enhanced building and facilities. It is now time for us to undertake a new effort to provide for the secure future of Israel Congregation, a security that must be achieved if we are to meet the challenges that lie ahead. Elements of our old model for success such as one time gifts and pledges paid over a period of years will be enhanced by new means of support through planned giving involving techniques such as bequests and legacies, charitable remainder trusts and the whole panoply of tax efficacious philanthropy. We hope to match each congregant with a technique that will be suitable and effective. To lead this effort, your new president has appointed Bob Horowitz, Marisa Eisemann and me as co chairs. We look forward to the support we know we will receive from all of you and we pledge our dedication to the task ahead. As I close my last edition of President s Perspective, I want to express my thanks to all of you who have taken the time to read my column and to express my sincere appreciation to those who have told me they learned something in the process. Morty Bunis
4 Page 4 BOOKNOTES O n Monday April 12, twenty one congre gants and one guest visited the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachu setts as the third and final event in the current ICM Reads series. The ICM Reads program highlighted the book Outwitting History by Aaron Lansky, the founder of the National Yiddish Book Center. The visit began with the viewing of the short documentary, A Bridge of Books, which shows the history of the Book Center. Follow ing lunch, we all gathered in the auditorium to hear an exciting and inspiring talk by Aaron Lansky. Following the talk, an intern con ducted a one hour tour of the Book Center in cluding the new underground book reposi tory. This trip was a wonderful opportunity to learn how over one million Yiddish books were saved. Stan Reisman for the Library Committee Pictured Above: The group just before our talk with Aaron Lansky. 5 Religious School s our school year winds down A we will enjoy learning about kosher foods with Sandra Marsh & learning about the beauty & importance of Israel with Alison Hill. Last month we all enjoyed a favorite community service event as we headed out to clean up High Meadow Way, the road that ICM sponsors. It was a great day to be outside with teachers and parents, having fun and doing a mitzvah all at the same time! Our year finishes on May 12 and we would like to invite any and all members of the congregation to join us from 4:00 6:00 for field games and a potluck dinner. We hope to eat outside but just in case, we ask that potluck dishes be dairy or parve. Think salads, pizza, mac & cheese, sesame noodles. We ll provide balls, nets, racquets, etc. as well as beverages and paper goods. The children had a great time brainstorming how they would like to celebrate the end of their year of learning. Food, family and fun... what more could you ask for? 6 Page 6 Terezin Remembered O n May 1 The Vermont Symphony Orchestra will perform Verdi s Requiem at the Flynn Center in Burlington to honor a performance of this work over 66 years ago by the prisoners at the Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia a camp in which many of that country s finest musicians, artists, actors and writers died. And shortly after their heroic performance almost all of the singers were sent to their deaths. This VSO concert will culminate a week of events in remembrance of Terezin. Call the Flynn Center for ticket information. April 26; Terezin Remembered. An art exhibit featuring works by Helga Weissovea Hoskova painted during her incarceration as a young girl at Terezin. April 28, 7:30pm; A free Music from Terezin chamber music concert at the McCarthy Arts Center, St. Michael s College featuring music by three important Czech composers who were prisoners: Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein and Viktor Ullmann. Learn to Sound Shofar T he shofar is one of the earliest musical instruments known to mankind and it has not changed in over 5,000 years. In Biblical times the shofar was blown to announce an important event, such as the alarm of war or the coming of peace. Today, the shofar is used mainly on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The shofar sounder is called the Baʹal Tekiya (Master of the Blast). Serving as Ba al Tekiya is an honor as the Ba al Tekiya sounds the shofar on behalf of the entire congregation. Although every Jew is eligible for this sacred office, it takes practice to produce a clear sound from the shofar and to sustain the final note, tekiah gedolah. If you would like to learn to sound the shofar, please contact Eric Dreiblatt at mkte@comcast.net. Our Warsaw Torah J ust a few weeks ago, a woman named Robyn Armon stopped by Israel Congregation. Until a few years ago she had a second home in Manchester but had not been in our building since the dedication 25 years ago. Her name and that of her former husband are on several of the small plaques to the right of the front door when you enter the synagogue. Though they didnʹt come here to worship (Robyn s in laws did a few times), they all felt it was of utmost importance that there be a place to pray other than at the RK Miles lumber yard and they got very involved financially in supporting the construction of our building in Robynʹs roommate from college, a woman with the last name of Schiff is also on a plaque. Her father, a Polish survivor, told them about a tattered torah from the Warsaw ghetto that was presently located on the Lower East Side of New York and looking for a home. Robyn went and got it and took it to Israelshe flew with it sitting on her lap. Her mother in law, who lived in Israel part time, found a scribe and they spent $10,000 to have the torah fixed and koshered. Two months later the mother in law flew back to the US but first stopped in London to pick out a yad from her cousin who owned Musiaff Jewelers in England. The yad was supposedly already an antique. She then brought the torah and yad to Manchester, Vermont and presented it to Israel Congregation. Robyn identified the torah in our ark, which on the day of her visit was all the way to the right, as the one she took to Israel. It looks like itʹs the smallest... she also recognized the yad. We took out the album and guest book from the original dedication and she found her name there. Does anyone else know this story or another piece of ICM history? We d love to hear your story. To Live Fully continued from page 1 which is, as I am learning, contingent). Is it knowledge? Is it the authenticity that you bring to your relationships with those who are close to you or in your family? Is it how you communicate with others? Is it how you behave (or act out; another way of saying youʹre behaving in way that you may not be fully conscious of?) Life is about living, and living fully, the best that we can. In each and every moment we should recognize our blessings, celebrate our connections, and live in gratitude for lifeʹs many gifts.
7 Page 7 A Parting Word A s a president of an organization leaves office, it is appropriate to reflect on what his administration has achieved, whom he has motivated and what challenges he has met. Such reflection and evaluation is properly left to the members of the organization. But as I leave office, it is important for me to acknowledge the contributions of many members and to express my personal gratitude to each of them for the efforts they have undertaken on behalf of ICM and the results they have helped us all achieve over the past two years. It s a rather lengthy list and I undertake to announce it being fully mindful of the risk of inadvertently leaving someone out who clearly merits inclusion. My apology in advance. So here goes. To Marlene Skulnik, Marisa Eisemann, John Sobel, Arnie Katz, Cathy Kimmel, Stan Lisman and Merrily Lewis, the members of my Executive Committee who have helped me formulate policy and coordinate its implementation.
