Hundreds of illegal workers have been arrested and thrown in jail. Investigations are ongoing into AgriProcessors (see jta.org), the company that owns the largest single kosher slaughter facility in the United States. To replace the jailed workers, the company has hired homeless people from Texas and bussed them in. Management is under investigation. Because of this, there is a shortage of kosher meat. One could plausibly ask, ʺHow could a company that supplies the majority of the kosher meat in the United States get into a situation like this?ʺ The answers are complex, but if one reads Postville, the book featured in last W ith great anticipation and excitement, Israel Congregationʹs Religious School year begins on September 10. I hope that all of our students and their families had a wonderful summer break and look forward to all of the possibility of the new year. We have been working over the summer to reflect on last year and plan for the new year. Our school day begins at 3:50 pm, which allows us to spend fifteen minutes before our first class session for our students to have time to socialize, transition monthʹs Shofar (and in Israel Congregationʹs library), one will see that having a kosher meat processing facility in rural Iowa was always an unusual situation. The company is owned by a Brooklynresiding Chasid, and all of management at the plant is Chasidic. The workers on the floor and in the cold rooms usually come from the lower economic rungs of society. In its rural location, the company was able to do its business ʺout of sight.ʺ Here, however, my issue is to share with you my wrestling over the role of kosher meat in my life in light of what is happening. For many years now, I have bought meat that was processed in this facility. I did so, even with the addicontinued on pg. 7 Opening Day Set For the New School Year from their school day, and have a snack. This year we are organizing school to have two forty minute sessions, one of Hebrew, and one of Judaica. There will be a ten minute recess between the class periods. At 5:45 pm we will all gather in the sanctuary for prayer, song, stories, and announcements. All of our parents and friends are invited to come into the sanctuary and join us for the closing of Religious School. Please watch your ʺsnail mailʺ continued on pg. 4

2 Page 2 Welcoming Our New Administrator L ynda McCann Gillman is a native Midwesterner and 39 year practicing Nichiren Buddhist. She holds an M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Prior to joining our congregation, Lynda served almost eight years as the Office Manager for the Union for Reform Judaism Mid Atlantic Council in the regional office located on Embassy Road in Washington, DC. This office serves 72 congregations in a 6 state area. She had full responsibility for office operations and logistical planning for local and regional meetings and conferences. Lynda s prior experience in the nonprofit arena was in experiential education, where she was responsible for placement of college students in internships in Washington, DC. Additionally, she earned a BA from UIUC in Political Science with a minor in Asian Studies. While in Chicago she nourished her love of theater and the performing arts by studying with noted director Del Close of The Second City. She enjoys the anachronistic appeal of Renaissance Faires and has served as an unofficial photographic chronicler of the Maryland Renaissance Festival for nearly a decade. Lynda is the eldest of five siblings and has lived in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Virginia and Maryland in suburban, urban and rural communities. Her fiancé is Dan Ovington, General Manager of the Orvis Flagship store in Manchester; they are creating a home together in Arlington. Please join us in giving Lynda a warm welcome; stop in and say hello! Happy Birthday to Religious School Student... Maddie Zeif, August 3 Board Notes T he regular meeting of the Board of Directors of Israel Congregation of Manchester was held on June 26, 2008 at the synagogue. Newly elected President Morty Bunis spoke about how he intends to conduct board meetings, encouraging everyone to contribute. New Board members (Cathy Kimmel, Merrily Lewis, Mindy Bloom) were introduced and welcomed. In his report, Rabbi Novak went over the calendar for the next few months: 8/8 Observance of Tisha b Av 8/31 Tag Sale collections begin 9/5 Shabbat service & dinner at the Glazer residence Stratton area 9/7 Tag Sale 9/10 Religious school begins 9/29 Erev Rosh Hashanah 10/8 Kol Nidre 10/13 Sukkot The Center of Learning is continuing with literary subjects. The Rabbi will be conducting a series of classes titled, Sacred Fragments. He will also be providing an introduction to the new Holiday Prayer Book. Sandra Koffman reported for the Religious School Committee. The school will have between 16 and 18 students next year so only three teachers are needed. As Committee Chair, Sandra is recommending a possible mandatory parents session before school begins. She noted also that she is looking for additional committee members. Merrily Lewis reported for the Tikkun Olam Committee. She requested approval for the following expenditures: $500 for ATZUM, $200 for Northshire Interfaith Council Summer Lunch Program and $180 for the Arava Institute. All requests were approved by the Board. For a complete list of the committee s donations, congregants can contact Micki Lisman at msloane.esq@mindspring.com. Arnie Katz suggested that ICM form a team for the Susan Komen Race in July. A congregant has volunteered to purchase T shirts.

3 President s Perspective O n July 4th, Israel Congregation celebrated its annual community event, a coming together for fun, food and fellowship to observe our nation s independence. The fact that the special date coincided with Shabbat presented an opportunity for a special kind of celebration. All who attended echoed the sentiments that: Sandy Castelbaum and Ruthie Ellenbogen, the cochairs of the event, had done a masterful job of planning the celebration, providing food and drink, and handling the support arrangements; Micki Lisman and her team of Tikkun Olam committee members had presented an exciting raffle to raise funds for the enhancement of their charitable efforts; Joanne Beck, demonstrating her vocal and instrumental talents, had presented a pleasing musical backdrop for the event; Rabbi David Novak had organized a unique and inspiring Shabbat service under a beautiful Vermont summer sky. Message From the High Holiday Chairman I am pleased to report that things are well under way with the preparations for the upcoming High Holidays. You should be receiving information about the Holidays by August 10 in the mail. Dates of the Holidays this year are as follows: Erev Rosh Hashanah Monday, Sept. 29 Rosh Hashanah Tuesday, Sept. 30 Rosh Hashanah II Wednesday, Oct. 1 Kol Nidre Wednesday, Oct. 8 Yom Kippur Thursday, Oct. 9 For those of you who have been involved with me, I would like to personally say thank you for your hard work and dedication to our synagogue. Please allow me to be the first to wish each and every one of you only wonderful things for the new year. Arnie Katz Page 3 I believe that top notch performance deserves recognition and an expression of appreciation. This is what inspires continued top performance by those who have been recognized and praised for their efforts. After all, compliments are like potato chips. Once you ve had one, you look for more. As observed by the author William James, All of us, in the glow of feeling we have pleased, want to do more to please. Entertainment entrepreneur Samuel Goldwyn urged that when someone does something well, we should applaud, thereby making two people happy. The power of praise is limited only by its lack of use. How many people do you know who could benefit from a sincere congratulations, or, great job, or possibly even, you re the best? Silent appreciation doesn t mean much. Let others know your positive feelings toward them. You ll find that they ll make every effort to live up to your compliment. Morty Bunis A Library to be Proud Of S ummertime and the reading is ample. Especially here at Israel Congregation where the library has undergone a renaissance that makes it one of the finest small synagogue libraries anywhere. What you will encounter in this jewel box is nothing short of wonderful. Considerable thought and energies have been directed by the volunteer Library Committee to transform what was to what you will find today. First the library was edited from its existing collection. All libraries everywhere do this regularly to ensure that the collection is actually what people want to use. Israel Congregation had many wonderful books, including many duplicates, that have found new homes. continued on page 7

7 Kashrut Dilemma continued from pg. 1 Library Page 7 continued from pg. 3 tional expense, because in my home, I find great merit to the kedushah, the holiness, that comes from keeping kosher. It makes me feel Jewish. I like going to kosher food stores, I like being with other Jews, and I like that we are part of a system that builds holiness into eating. Food is too important to take for granted. Keeping kosher connects my present to the past. Yet I find myself at a crossroads. I donʹt like, in fact I detest, what has happened in Iowa. I do not like what has been videotaped by animal rights activists that show the slaughtering process and what appears to be the suffering of the animals. I donʹt like knowing that the company chose to rely on illegal workers (and has for some time according to the book Postville) who do not have any rights (or whose rights are abridged) by the company. In balancing our Jewish obligation to not cause animals needless suffering, and more importantly, to not treat the worker unfairly, I cannot ʺsquare the circleʺ of kosher meat right now. So where does that leave me? After considerable contemplation, I have decided that going forward, the meat that I purchase for use in my home will be, to the extent possible, locally raised and organic (which appears to be easy to acquire in Vermont). While it will not be slaughtered and soaked according to kosher rules, it will, in my mind, fulfill equally compelling obligations of not abusing workers or animals. At the same time, I will continue to separate milk and meat, a prohibition from the Torah to again remind ourselves not to be cruel to an animal by ʺboiling a kid in its motherʹs milk.ʺ All of us make choices in our religious life. It is important to me to share this choice with you and my reasons for making it. I hope that in the future we will be able to have it all kosher meat that is raised with concern for the animalʹs welfare by people who are treated well as employees. Until that day, I will live with this compromise knowing that this, like other parts of life, requires choosing between competing compelling values. There are new books a plenty in the Israel Congregation Library. One entire wall is filling up with books on Jewish lifecycle (organized by lifespan from birth onward), Jewish customs, Jewish spirituality, Jewish ethics, Jewish cooking, Jewish women well, you get the point. Under the window there is a new book cart that is filled on its two top shelves with many new books, as well as a small selection of books in the vestibule of the synagogue. Make it a habit to check this out on a regular basis. The fiction section is quite invigorated with a range of Jewish authors including recently released titles as well as classics. In Jewish Thought, you will find books by Abraham Joshua Heschel that are absolutely scintillating as well as books on Jewish mysticism, theology, and philosophy. In the Jewish Prayer section there is the ʺMy Peopleʹs Prayer Bookʺ series that opens up how Jewish liturgy works, featuring a number of excellent scholars commenting in plain English. In the next section you will find Jewish History, both throughout the world and here in the United States. Do you want to read about the history of Sephardic Jews or the history of the Jews of the Lower East Side? Both subjects are covered. And much, much more. The biography section has dozens of books about people. The section on the Shoah, the Holocaust, includes the Pulitzer prize winning ʺThe Years of Exterminationʺ by Saul Friedlander. I personally recommend it; a difficult, but worthwhile read. Nearby you will also find our DVD/CD section for media. In short, the library is ready and waiting. It is only missing YOU. Come in, browse, check out a book, read it, bring it back, repeat. You can look for books by browsing our shelves, or you can check the computer catalogue on the library imac. My thanks to all of the members of the Library Committee and the Merkado Family for the time and treasure to revision and recreate our library. Happy reading! LʹShalom, Rabbi David Novak
