3 16 Heshvan 18 Tevet 5773/November December 2012 The First First Day Of Chanukah F or Irene and me, the two major family holidays are Thanksgiving and Chanukah... food, song, more food and story telling are important, but having the family together is the absolutely essential element. When we became empty nesters, getting the whole family together for both holidays, so close in time, became increasingly difficult. Thanksgiving, being a national holiday, was the event we could count on to have our children and their children and our extended family around the dining room table. We ate, we sang. We shared our reasons for giving thanks. But all too often Chanukah loomed as an empty event because it often followed on the heels of Thanksgiving. And so Irene and I started a new Glazer tradition... by making the day after Thanksgiving the first first day of Chanukah. With our whole family together, we light the first candle, exchange a few gifts, eat latkes with apple sauce and talk about this very special holiday. Now, as President of Israel Congregation, I feel a different but just as important sense of family and community. It is written that the real meaning of Chanukah is freedom freedom to choose and practice our religion and our freedom not to assimilate and that the menorah, which symbolizes light, really means wisdom. We have the freedom to observe our religion, and at ICM we benefit from the wisdom of the members who came before us who made possible this beautiful home. So on Thanksgiving day we have much to celebrate. Most of all, we need to give thanks for our amazing community of members who enrich each other s lives on a daily basis. Irene and I want to wish you and your family a safe and calm holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving and happy first, first day of Chanukah. Ed Glazer, President ICM s Moveable Feast Raises $10,000! Page 3 ith over 100 people in attendance, ICM s First W Annual Moveable Feast was a resounding success! Congregants joined together in nine different homes enjoying fabulous food prepared by our very talented & generous chefs: Fran & Mark Aronowitz, Mindy & Alan Bloom, Rosalie & Lee Fox, Irene & Ed Glazer, Carol & Phil Goldsmith, Phyllis & Steve Gottdiener, Linda & David Sischy, Marlene & David Skulnik, Norma & Paul Waters. This evening would not have been possible without the support and dedication of our committee chairs. Karen Ganz, our extraordinary auction chair, worked tirelessly and creatively to gather exciting auction items, garnering $6,400. Our unflappable reservation chair, Norma Rappaport, worked closely with Karen lending her design expertise and energy to the auction. A big thank you to our dynamite auctioneer, Ed Glazer. Kudos to our dessert chair, Nancy Landis, who turned the auction space into an elegant blue & silver setting, decorated with candles and flowers. She assembled a magnificent variety of desserts and sweets. Her wonderful bakers were Judy Hirschberg, Lynne Abcug, Helena Davidoff, Merrily Lewis, Cathy Kimmel, Carole Gold, Yuval Sela, Ponce Restaurant, Justin Smolov, Amy Benedikt, and Nancy. Desserts were accompanied by the lovely piano music of Sharon Wexler. Special thanks to invitation chair Mickey Kent with Judy Katz & Susan Kreitzer for creating our beautiful invitation! Thanks go to our extended committee, Al Feldan, Carole Gold, Ina Rubin, Rebecca Fishkin, Marjorie Weiss. Much appreciation to our generous donors for helping us cross the finish line! And a heartfelt thank you to Karen Dreiblatt who supported our committee in every way possible. The most wonderful thing about this event was that, in addition to raising funds for ICM, we all had the opportunity to come together as a community, to enjoy great food as well as each other s company. Sandy Castelbaum, Chair, Moveable Feast The overwhelming support of our members and the dedication and commitment of chairwoman Sandy Castelbaum and her tireless committee made this event an evening to remember and bolstered the synagogue coffers. My gratitude to all who organized, schlepped, baked, cooked, decorated, designed, and attended. Remember the great time you had and be sure to return next year to see what this amazing committee will do. Oh start making a list of friends to invite the more, the merrier. Lynne Abcug, Fundraising Chair.
