May / June 2017 Iyar / Sivan Tammuz ISSUE 3 NEWSLETTE R HIGHLIGHTS Newsletter HADASSAH The Women's Zionist Organization of America President's Message It is hard to believe that three months have passed so quickly! We have had a busy start to 2017! I hope you all shared a happy Passover with your family and friends. Many of you have updated your information for the 2017 Charlotte Jewish Community Directory sponsored by Hadassah. We only have two more months to complete this process, as this summer will be spent assembling the directory for release in time for the high holidays If you haven't done so, Enter Your Free Listing Here Our Health Night in March was incredibly educational, and well attended. Sharon Goretsky and her committee shared the latest information on Multiple Sclerosis from Hadassah Hospital. Local specialists discussed MS, community members spoke about their personal experiences, and LJCC staff spoke as well, on the benefits of exercise. What a wonderful night that was! Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen. Our membership event at Amy Rosewater's house was SO FUN!! We welcomed Laura Lewin and discussed her book. We laughed, met new friends, and had a great time. Thank you to Amy for opening your home, and for a fun girl's night out! You won't want to miss the next get together! Our Passover tasting was delicious and enjoyable. We shared new Passover recipes, and met new friends. This was our second year doing this at Lynda White's home, and it has become a wonderful Passover tradition. Thank you Lynda White and Roz Cooper. Moving into April we are busy with the TaTas plans for Lots of fun things to look forward to. If you would like to be involved in the TaTas planning committee, please Sandra Goldman, vaduzfl@gmail.com to get involved. Thank you Sandra for taking the lead once again.

May brings two wonderful events. May 2 nd we will study Israeli Poetry with Rabbi Dusty Klass from Temple Beth El. Thank you Amalia Warshenbrot for your leadership with this event. May 11 th we will dance at the LJCC to bring attention to women heart health month. We are grateful to the LJCC for partnering with us as together we educate each other on exercise and the heart healthy benefits of being active. Thank you Sharon Goretsky for your leadership. There is so much going on in Hadassah Charlotte. WE have heard from many of you that you are inspired by our initiative, motivated by our membership, and we are grateful for your generosity. MARCH MEET UP - Women's Health & Advocacy Night Laura Lewin & Barbara Green, co-authors of The Vagina Revolution, shared their passion & knowledge during a night of exploring women's health issues in an intimate setting. The questions and interactive discussion were wonderful and made for an eye opening & informative ladies night out. Roz Cooper, Hadassah's Regional PRAZE coordinator, also spoke about Hadassah's role in women's advocacy & how those interested can take action. New and prospective members sipped wine and chatted with long time members about becoming active in Hadassah while learning more about what this amazing group of 300,000 volunteers nation-wide accomplishes. There are so many different opportunities for volunteers, from spending an hour at a registration table to chairing an event. If you want to join or get more involved in the Hadassah Charlotte Chapter, please reach out to me, Amy Rosewater, amyrosewater@gmail.com,

Lunch and Learn Lunch & learn is an on-going program, which is open to all members of Hadassah. We meet the third Friday of the month - September through May from 11:45 AM until 1:00 PM (except for April this year). Please bring a dairy lunch. Last year we read and discussed short Israeli stories. Presently, we are reading short stories based on women in the Bible in After Abel and other short stories, by Michal Lemberger. The author attempts to gives voices to women who, while mentioned in the Bible, are not named and get few verses in the text. The stories address questions like: What are the women's stories? How would they think? What would they say if we gave them a chance to speak? Please note there is no session in April in observance of Passover. Our next session will be Friday, May 19 th at 11:45 am at Temple Israel. The book is available for less than $10- from Amazon and in the Levine-Sklut Judaic Library & Resource Center. BRING A FRIEND! COME EVEN IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE STORY (it is short). The group is welcoming and the conversations are interesting. For additional information contact Amalia at amaliaima@att.net or Linda Levy at levyollie@aol.com Hadassah's Health Night On Monday evening, March 20 th, Charlotte Hadassah hosted MS In the Spotlight. This informative evening began with a video, from Hadassah Medical Organization, highlighting their cutting edge stem cell research and MS clinic. Together, we watched

as Malia, a Hadassah patient, walked out of the hospital after her life changing stem cell treatment. Dr. Matthew Carraro from Novant Health shared the latest information about MS, including up to date information about the newest medication, which was FDA approved a few days later. Dr. Michael Blackman opened up about his experience as someone with MS, while Richard Klein shared MS from a family member's perspective. Jenny Crow and Cathy Bennett, from the JCC, explained the benefits of both cardio and strength training for everyone. The evening concluded with wine and cheese, and good company. Special thanks to Sharon Goretsky for putting this great program together for the community!! Hadassah's Second Annual Passover Tasting Luncheon

By Roz Cooper Lynda and Jim White's house was really decked out for Pesach on March 31 st for Charlotte Hadassah's Passover Tasting Luncheon. Fresh flowers and frogs were everywhere to remind us of spring and the 10 plagues. Special thanks go to Mary Kaplan and Sandra Friend for helping to create the festive atmosphere. More than 30 Hadassah members from Charlotte, Sun City and Lake Norman shared delicious Passover food and great conversation. Recipes were printed into a cookbook, so that all of our families could reap the benefits of our collective culinary talents. Another special thank you to Jane Diamond for putting together the booklet which will definitely be used in many of our homes this Passover season! A special moment came, when Amalia Warshenbrot, Charlotte Chapter's Vice President of Education shared some of her knowledge about the development of the Haggadah. She underscored the fact that the Haggadah has changed throughout Jewish history and that changes made only further enrich the Seder experience. Kudos to Lynda White, whose graciousness and generosity made the afternoon possible. Our Passover lunch was a great kick off to the season. All who attended had a terrific time, made new friends and went home ready to prepare for the holiday with their family! Chag Sameach! Many thanks to Roz Cooper and Lynda White for chairing this fabulous event!!
