3 Message from General Studies Director My wife and I will make our way over to Athens, Ohio this weekend to visit my 20-year old daughter and attend the Ohio University vs. Marshall University football game. If I m honest with myself, attending the game is just an excuse to spend the day with my daughter Emily. You see, it feels like only yesterday that she was a middle school student, toiling with homework each night; complaining about her playing time as a member of the volleyball team; and requiring more than a few reminders to clean her room. Raising children no matter their age can be challenging. It is often easy to get distracted with the details of our daily lives and overlook those fleeting moments we get with our children. I would give anything to turn back the clock so I could spend more time with Emily the middle schooler. That said, I am excited to take advantage of my time this weekend with Emily! How can I be fully present while visiting her? What can I do to make her feel special? What distractions can wait until after we say our goodbyes and I get back in the car for the long drive home? I m sure I ll one day miss Emily s college days, but I am not going to look back and regret not doing everything I could to make the most of my time with my sweet daughter. I share this with you because our CHDS community is filled with many young, growing families. Many of us live very busy lives, filled with many responsibilities. These days while our children our young and under foot are fleeting. I pray that we will all be blessed with the time, energy, and desire to make the most of these opportunities with our children. Early Childhood News This week in the Early Childhood division has been especially exciting and rewarding; the children are settled in their routines and learning is happening all around! Here's a peek at what's been going on in our classrooms: Morah Chana's Toddlers Trip to the mail box to mail RH cards Making Round challahs for RH Beautiful Rimon project Morah Shoshana's Toddlers Carrot Painting Baking Honey Cookies for RH Creating RH cards Three-Year-Old Nursery Apple sensory boxes Rosh Hashana Centers Enjoying a R"H "Seudah" Pre-K Tzimmes Making The letter "A" and apple stamping Counting pomegranate seeds Apple tasting and class survey Al Pi Darko Experiencing the "simanim" of RH Sugar Cane presentation by Yoey Bernstein Geometric solids: cube, cone and sphere Bees and beehives, the honey process Kindergarten Boys Focus on simanim Osios hey, vav and zayin Magic letter "C" Zero-the-Hero Day Kindergarten Boys Apples and Honey Tasting with color graph Making RH cards Magic letter "C" Zero-the-Hero Day Middle School Boys The GMS BMS boys were privileged to participate in two special assemblies this week. First on Tuesday we joined over one hundred thousand Jews worldwide in a special learning session on the Chofetz Chaim's yahertzrit. Then on Friday Rabbi Scherer arranged a special pre Rosh Hashanah kumzitz. This week we will highlight seventh grade. 7th Grade Gemara class is off to a fantastic start!!! The Boys have already mastered their 1st amud/page of Gemara and are deeply engrossed in their 2nd. The beginning of their studies in Arvei Pesachim has them discussing the Prohibition of eating prior to Shabbos/Yom Tov night, specifically on Erev Pesach; in order to eat the Suedas Mitzva that night with a hearty appetite. The class has learned all of the Rashbams (Rashi's grandson, typically learned instead of Rashi ion this Gemara) and developed an appreciation for his necessary commentaries. In Navi, the 6&7th Grade boys have finished Perek Alef of Shmuel Alef. Not only have they learned through the Pesukim but have discussed Rashis, Redaks, Metzudas Dovids, Maharals, Malbims etc and the list goes on and on. The 1st Perek introduces us to the Tzaddik Elkana and his wife, Chana. Chana's experience at the Mishkan, detailed in the middle of the Perek was the focus of classes, as they learned various Halachos of Tefila/Shmoneh Esray from Chana. It goes without saying that they then discussed how they could incorporate these Halachos and Mussar lessons into their lives. Can't wait for Perek Beis with the famous Shiras Chana!!!! Starting with physical science systems in 7th grade this trimester, students have reviewed properties of matter and learned more about physical and chemical properties of substances and mixtures. They are improving their abilities to observe and describe various forms of stuff (aka matter). Ask the boys about the two labs we have completed -- What happens when a drop of an unknown blue solution is added to a piece of aluminum foil? How can one separate a mixture of salt and pepper? In the next few weeks, they will be exploring the periodic table and learning how to take better measurements of solids, liquids, and gases. In 7th grade math, they are completing our reviews of what students remember about numbers (including ordering, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and rounding). They also collected data on student's individual reaction time (dropping and catching a ruler); they will analyze their data sets in a couple of months when statistics are introduced. Expect an in about a week (when they formally begin Chapter 1) summarizing what they will be learning about integers and rational numbers and describing the next hands-on activities (for example, expanding the understanding of the number line and comparing numbers by measuring a variety of solids, liquids, and gases). Even as they begin covering the new material, they will continue reviewing useful topics (including working with fractions, long division, ratios and proportions). 7th Grade Language Arts: They have been working on writing their theme-focused short stories and revising them. They will be writing their final drafts and sharing their stories with the class, to see if their classmates can identify any possible themes from their stories. They also started their vocabulary curriculum and began working in their Vocabulary Workshop books, discussing six particular words that they are going to focus on first. The seventh grade students have been examining the colonization of America in history class. Through the first few weeks of school they have utilized active reading skills and Cornell note taking skills to support their learning of the Spanish, French, and Dutch colonies in the Americas. After the holidays they will be focusing on the British colonies. The boys are off to a strong start to the school year! May Hashem grant everybody a kesivah vechasima tova!
4 CHDS 14 th Annual Golf Outing The CHDS 14 th annual Golf Outing was a great success. We wish to extend a big thank you to the following people for their invaluable assistance with the golf outing: Andy & Rochel Sollofe Yaacov Rabenstein Dovid Lustig Ari & Chana Weisberg Eli Polsky Sherri Zuroff Dovie & Yisorel Moshe Weisberg Mordechai Sollofe In particular we would like extend a big yasher koach to golf outing chair Rabbi Raffie Zuroff who orchestrated yet another successful event. Of course a very big THANK YOU to all our generous sponsors for their support On-Time Arrival A CHDS STUDENT IS SUCCESSFUL WHEN: WW He/She attends school daily and is on time for davening and all classes. He/She gets the proper amount of sleep so that he can be on time for school and function at his best. Main Campus Procedure: Every minute of learning is precious and we want to maximize every second at school. On-time arrival is critical for your child and the rest of the students in their class. At our main campus, school begins at 8:30am (drop-off begins at 8:15). Arrival after 8:30am is considered a late arrival and your child will need a late note. From 8:30-8:40am a hall monitor will be present to monitor the safety of your child and to provide a late note. If your child arrives after 8:40am, a parent must accompany the child to the office to sign them in. Thank you for your partnership in making sure your child arrives on-time! Middle School Girls Another great week has gone by! Although this week was short, each class really made the most of every minute learning a lot and preparing for Rosh HaShana. Mazal tov to our fifth grade girls for finishing Perek Alef in Parshas Sh'mos! They have really been working on mastering their prefix and suffix skills and they are enjoying learning about the start of the slavery in Mitzrayim! Our sixth grade girls have really been enjoying learning about Chana and Penina in Navi! They have adjusted to sixth grade beautifully and are really proud of the notes they are taking on their own, both in Chumash and Navi. Great job sixth grade girls! Mazal tov to our seventh grade girls for finishing Perek Alef in Shmuel Beis! The girls learned about the greatness of Shaul and Yonason through the beautiful eulogy that Dovid wrote for them. The girls are anticipating some adventures as they begin their journey into B'nei Yisrael's history with Dovid as the king. Mazal tov to our eighth grade girls for finishing Perek Alef in Melachim Alef! The girls are looking forward to seeing the similarities and differences between Dovid HaMelech and Shlomo HaMelech's lives as king! Our eighth grade girls also really enjoyed a pop review contest about Avinu Malkeinu in Beur Tefilla! The girls were so motivated and engaged and they surprised and impressed themselves at how much they remembered! This week on Wednesday, the sixth through eighth grade girls were treated to a special workshop presented by our very own Mrs. Kahn! The girls had a chance to learn how each one of them can crown HaShem everyday, and especially before Rosh HaShana. The girls also had a chance to hear about the life and accomplishments of the Chofetz Chaim (the yartzheit on whom was this week) and each girl chose one houron Thursday to be extra vigilant about her speech. The girls were so inspired that some are continuing to keep their special hour each day!yasher koach! Wishing everyone a great Shabbos and a kesiva v'chasima tova! Save the Date Important Dates September Rosh Hashana no school September 16 Fast of Gedaliah-1:30 dismissal September 22 Erev no school September 23 September 28-October 7 Sukkos break no school October 8 Return to school November 25 Conferences no school November Thanksgiving break no school Spotlight on First Grade Boys Judaic Studies Yahadus They were very busy learning and preparing for Yom Tov! Everyone enjoyed an early taste of a sweet new year, eating apples dipped in honey, while learning about the Simanim (symbolic foods) of Rosh Hashana. The class was also introduced to a group of special centers focusing on a Rosh Hashana table. They has the opportunity to set a Rosh Hashana table using real props, wrote the Hebrew words for the different objects on the table and made an arts and crafts picture depicting this as well. YAHADUS Over the past few weeks they learned all about Rosh Hashana, and discussed the halachos (laws) and minhagim (customs) of the Yom Tov. This week they focused on the Shofar and the significance of it being from a Ram. As the Shofar was passed around they learned about the 3 sounds that are blown: Tekiah, Shevarim, and Teruah. They also talked about the different names Rosh Hashana has and how they can daven for their names to be written in the Sefer Hachaim. They learned about Tashlich, and how it is customary to recite it at a body of water after Mincha on the first day of Rosh Hashana. During centers this week, the boys enjoyed special Rosh Hashana themed activities and sheets where they were able to review different topics that were learned through different methods. Some of these were copying key Rosh Hashana words in hebrew, creating a puzzle of a Rosh Hashana picture, cutting and gluing the correct picture on the mitzvah or aveira side of a scale, matching the shofar horn to the right animal etc... Fourth Grade visits the First grade: This week the fourth grade boys had the opportunity to visit the first grade boys class to share with them an exciting presentation about the mitzvah of Shofar. There were skits demonstrating what the shofar is supposed to remind us of and a demonstration on how a shofar is made. Thank you to the fourth grade boys for their presentations and thank you the first graders for their participation. Mazel Tov Rabbi and Mrs. Kaufman on the birth of a baby boy To the Berhman and Ziv families on the engagement of Shifra Leah Berhman
