4 Nursery news JUDAIC STUDIES MOROT SHULAMIS & TAMI Welcome again, and let s take a peak, To see what your child has done this week. Our staff and surroundings we are getting to know, including the playground where we just love to go. We learned about the Yom Tov Rosh Hashana, the Simanim and the songs we did sing, and all about how we are Hashemממליך who is our king. From the story of "Shofy and Blowfy" we now do know, what the Shofar is telling us when the Tekiah, Shvarim and Teruah do blow. To tip the scale לטובה many Mitzvos we want to do, in preparing for Rosh Hashana we want to be a good Jew. We had such fun rolling out the dough to make our honey cookies into a ball, we can't wait to taste and share them with our family and all. Nursery is filled with such excitement and fun, the children are just great, each and everyone. SECULAR STUDIES MOROT SHULAMIS & SUSAN This week, our focus was on our family unit. We talked about our mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers as well as our grandmothers and grandfathers. The class enjoyed listening to the stories The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn, Grandfather Twilight by Barbara Berger, Owl Babies by Martin Waddell and I m A big Sister by Joanna Cole. We created paintings and postcards depicting members of our families. We also made paper doll puppets. Our dramatic play area was set up to resemble different rooms in a home. The children enjoyed preparing pretend meals, sweeping the floors and reading stories to each other. We learned and sang the song Are You Sleeping. The children took turns gently waking up their friends. Are You Sleeping Are you sleeping (2x) Brother (insert name) (2x) I would like to play with you (2x) Please wake up (2x) During Music and Movement activities we played "Daddy and the Dell." We also learned a new finger play Two Little Kitties. 5 PRe-K PAGES JUDAIC STUDIES MOROT HEIDI & NECHAMA Our preparations for Rosh Hashana have continued this week. We spoke about the different sounds of the shofar - Tekiah, Shevarim, and Teruah and learned that the Shofar is blown 100 times on Rosh Hashana. The children were very busy learning new songs and working on their Rosh Hashana projects. We used a real scale and cubes to show the children how we would our scale to tip on the side of mitzvos on Rosh Hashana. We are learning about the concepts of Teshuva, Tefillah and Tzedakah and are focused on acting and speaking kindly to our friends in class. Some books that we read this week were: Eli and The Little White Lie by Goldie Golding and How The Mitzvah Giraffe Got His Long Neck by David Sokoloff. In our Hebrew language program, we continued to focus on the phrase Yaish Li. We also learned the words Holech/Holechet. יש לי תפוח יש לי שופר יש לי תפוח בדבש אבא הולך לבית הכנסת אמא הולכת לבית הכנסת We had a lot of fun baking delicious honey cupcakes which will be sent home next week. The children also loved working on all their Rosh HaShanah projects. Have a wonderful Shabbos! SECULAR STUDIES MORAH JUDY This week the Pre-K children continued their unit called, "Apples, Bees and Honey". They discussed what a fact is and learned many interesting facts about bees. They loved acting like bees. The children dressed up as bees and pretended to suck pollen from flowers in order to make honey. We learned about the Queen bee and how important her role is. The queen been leads all the drone worker bees. We learned from the bees how productive we can be if we work together, especially when doing a mitzvah. We loved acting out the poem "Five Little Bees" and making our "Five Little Bees" books. The children will love reading this book to you over the weekend. Tasting, counting and sorting apples was just some of the fun and educational experiences that we had in Pre-K this week. We made applesauce, which was a huge success for all the children. We compiled a list of many different ways that apples can be prepared but the children s favorite was, apples dipped in honey for Rosh Hashanah. Although we won t be starting our ABC unit after the yomim tovim, the Pre K children were already excited to sound out the letters A, B and H, relating to our unit, Apples, Bees and Honey. We read lots of books relating to our unit. Some books we read were, Apples by Gail Gibbons The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall and Apples to Oregon by Deborah Hopkinson. The Pre-K children became "Shape Detectives" as they joined in teams to search for shapes on the playground. There were many discoveries made by the children. They are becoming shape experts, and realizing that there are all different kinds of shapes all around their world. The children can play the shape game at home as well, by finding different shapes inside and outside. We read The Shape of Me by Dr. Seuss in conjunction with our shape exploration. Easel painting has become a favorite choice during center time. The Pre K children are mixing colors and becoming creative with their art. This week we made our own play dough, which brought out lots of creativity and socialization in the class. They are discovering their abilities to be creative and explore new ideas.

6 kindergarten CORNER JUDAIC STUDIES MOROT BAYLA & RENA With Rosh Hashana just one week away, the yeladim in the Kindergarten have been very busy. We have been learning and singing about many different mitzvos, foods and minhagim that pertain to this important Yom Tov. We discussed the different foods that we eat as simanim for a good sweet year such as tapuchim b'dvash, rimon, gezer and rosh shel dag. We learned that the shofar is blown 100 times on Rosh Hashana and we must be completely silent when listening to the Baal Tokeah. The yeladim enjoyed eating apples dipped in honey, and we even had the opportunity to see the inside of a rimon and to look at the many seeds. We made a beautiful honey dish, and baked delicious honey cupcakes in honor of this special yom tov. The children enjoyed listening to the books Tishrei by Rabbi Yaacov Koplowitz and On Rosh Hashana by Cathy Goldberg. The yeladim learned about saying "Selichos" which we begin to recite this Motzoei Shabbos. The letters "Bais and Vais" were introduced to the children this week. We learned many new words such as Bubba, Bayit, Brachos and Bais Hamikdash. The yeladim really enjoyed working in their new Aleph Bais Workbooks. This week is a double Parsha. In Parshas Nitzavim we learned that Hashem promised Bnai Yisroel that Moshiach will come. We also learned the pasuk "Ki karov aylecha hadavar meod befica u'belvavcha la;asaso". Hashem's Torah is very close to us, we should never think that it is too difficult to follow. In Parshas Vayelech, we learned about the mitzvah of "Hakhel". Once every seven years, the king would gather all the Jews in Yerushalayim and read parts of the Torah to them. We also discussed the mitzvah of writing a sefer Torah. Our best wishes for a Kesivah vechasimah Tovah. May you have a year filled with good health and nachas from your entire family. SECULAR STUDIES MOROT HEIDI & PEARLY We had a very busy and exciting week of school! We continued working on our All About Me unit. We discussed our similarities and differences, how each of us is part of a family unit and how each family is unique. We completed our books representing the letter C (k sound). As a culminating activity, we made cool cups (orange juice pops) from Cass s cookbook. W e filled our cups with orange juice and marked the cup with a line to show where the orange juice stopped. After our cool cups froze we noticed that the orange juice rose above the line that we had made. The children learned that as liquid freezes it expands. We also used the Big Book Corduroy, by Dan Freeman, to reinforce the k sound. We began a new letter book focusing on the letter O and its short sound. The children were introduced to the SUPERKIDS new character Oswald and his odd animals. The children thought of words that begin with the O short sound. We charted their ideas and drew pictures to depict the O words. We listened to a CD about Oswald and practiced short O sound recognition in our letter books. We also practiced writing the capital and lowercase Oo. We made sure to pay attention to the top, middle and bottom lines on the paper. In Math, we began working in our Go Math workbooks. We practiced writing the numbers 1-5, matching sets of numbers and writing correct numbers representing counted objects. Last week, we learned how to make honey. We continued this theme and merged it with math concepts in an art/math project. The children used bees and flowers to strengthen their counting and one-to one correspondence skills.

7 Erev Shabbos Parashas Nitzavim-Vayelech 5774 Dear Parents, Shabbos is the birthright of every Jew. No matter how removed from observance and community one may be, the right to celebrate and experience Shabbos is granted to every Jewish person. One of the greatest tragedies to have befallen the Jewish People in the last 200 years, is the decline of Shabbos observance for the vast majority of our brethren. A unique opportunity has presented itself for each of us to do something meaningful and significant about the lack of Shabbos in our co-religionists lives. On Oct , the Shabbos of Parashas Noach, Jews around the world are uniting to observe Shabbos in a meaningful and unifying fashion. The Shabbos Project, an outgrowth of the wildly successful project last year in South Africa, is going global. Over 300 cities around the world, Miami included, are participating in this effort to have as many Jews as possible commit to keep an Halachic Shabbos on the same Shabbos. What does this mean for us? It gives us a chance to rally together to strengthen Shmiras Shabbos, for ourselves, our children, our community and all of Klal Yisrael. Ideally, we should find a person or family, invite them to spend a complete 25 hour Shabbos with us, and turn off the world s distractions, and turn on the spiritually dazzling world of Shabbos. Help a co-worker, relative, neighbor or friend rise to the challenge of keeping one Shabbos. There is no commitment beyond the one day this is an occasion to connect and unify Klal Yisrael around our most powerful common bond Shabbos. For those who don t undertake such a role on that Shabbos there is still much that can be done. Invite a less observant neighbor to walk over for one meal. Devote time to learning the Halachos of Shabbos, involve your children in learning and appreciating more about Shabbos. Put in time and effort to make your Shabbos table truly enjoyable for all your children. Sing more Zemiros, engage your children in questions and riddles about the Parsha and prepare meaningful and relevant Divrei Torah. Make your delicious food a bit more special that week. Organize groups to learn Hilchos Shabbos, focusing on the positive, Oneg (delight) aspects of Shabbos. Women and older girls are encouraged to participate in the Challah Bake set to take place at the MB Convention Center on Thursday evening Oct. 23. (Fathers be prepared for babysitting that night!) We are ing all our families the various flyers and information sheets being disseminated by the local Shabbos Project Committee. Every one of us should take an active role in uplifting the status of Shabbos, and of reaching out to any and every Jew we know, who can gain immeasurably from sharing our devotion to and passion for Shabbos. R Levi says: If the Jewish People observe even just one Shabbos properly, Mashiach will come. Why? Because it outweighs all the other Mitzvos (Midrash Rabba Shemos 25:12) What could stand us in better stead as we approach the Yamim Noraim than having been proactive in elevating the status of Shabbos and the unity of the Jewish people? 8 WEeKLY WRAP-UP mayor vallejo visits the ece We were so lucky to receive a visit from Mayor George Vallejo on Tuesday Morning. The students met the mayor and took pictures with him on our Playground. In conversation with Rabbi Baumann, Mayor Vallejo promised to continue efforts to partner with us and the community to enhance security for all. SCHOOL SECURITY UPDATE Our new security measures and procedures have been in effect as of this past Wednesday. Please note the following important information: All student drop offs and pick ups are to be through the parking lot. No on-street parking or stopping. 1. When entering the campus by vehicle: You must call the office via the keypad or have a car transponder to enter the rolling gate. If you have not yet received a car transponder, you can do so by filling out the request form on our website. Using the keypad, scroll up or down to 003 and press the phone icon to reach the Main Office. 2. When entering the campus on foot: Please use the keypad at either pedestrian gate to contact the office. Scroll up or down to 003 and press the phone icon to reach the Main Office. Any parent or visitor remaining on campus for more than just a few minutes will need to get a visitor s pass from the office. When granted access to the campus of when leaving, make sure not to let any unknown person piggy back and gain unauthorized access. Help us by making sure the gate closes behind you. We appreciate everyone s cooperation and patience as we implement these new security measures.
