6 Early Childhood News CHDS Welcomes a Special Guest This week CHDS was visited by Mr. Sam Boymel. Mr. Boymel was the driving force behind the purchasing and renovation our main campus. Mr. Boymel visited several of our Early Childhood classrooms where he greeted the students and together with them gave tzedaka. Middle School Boys B H we had a very successful first full week of school at BMS GMS! The boys are acclimating beautifully. Each week, we will highlight one grade, beginning with the 8th grade. The 8th grade boys begin each day by working on improving efficiency in Kriah through reviewing the weekly Parsha. In Gemara they are beginning Perek Hamafkid and the boys are developing their thinking skills, comprehension and vocabulary. In Navi, they are delving into the story of Yonah with mefarshim, and the hope is to finish in time for Yom Kippur. In Halacha, the boys are preparing for their first fundraiser by learning all of the details of the halachos of a succah. (FYI keep the boys in mind when thinking about building your succah!) In the 8th grade science class, they are studying Gregor Mendell, the father of modern genetics, and how he did his experiments that lead to our understandings of modern genetics. They are also in the midst of the designs and design challenges for their upcoming edible car race. Every day, they take the first 3 to 4 minutes of class to discuss the designs and then offer suggestions for helping to fix those design challenges. Lastly for this week, they are learning about Observations and Inferences, a set of fundamental tools to have for any young scientist. In 8th grade math, they are reviewing properties of numbers and other concepts that the boys learned in 6th and 7th grades. They seem to have a good grasp of decimals, ordering numbers, and addition and subtraction. They will continue working with rounding, multiplication, and division, topics that many of them need to practice a bit more before they dive into more complex equations and introductory algebra. The boys took the AIMSweb diagnostic tests this week, and their first quiz will be next Friday. They will continue working on properties of numbers for the next few weeks. In 8th grade social studies, they analyzed the roots that led to Columbus discovering America and learned about the age of exploration, setting the stage for the upcoming unit on the colonial times. What an incredible first full week of school! Every class utilized each minute as they learned, played, davened and sang- just to name a few! We welcomed Mr. Sam Boymel for a visit to some of our classrooms. The children showed exceptional respect and Hakaras HaTov! Morah Shoshana's toddlers had a great sensorial experience as they painted with pomegranate seeds- who knew painting tasted so good? Morah Chana's toddlers were busy "bees" as they strung their honey comb necklaces and worked on those fine motor skills. Morah Shaindel's class has a great time making Rosh Hashana cards- look out in the mail- your family might be receiving something very special for Yom Tov! The Al Pi Darko students made Rosh Hashana cards and are learning about the various tekios of the Shofar with a hands-on work: wow, they can "feel" the sound! (With sandpaper tekios.) The 1st year students are learning all the classroom basics and the 2nd and 3rd years are delving right into their language and math lessons, among others! Morah Kayla's class was so happy to welcome back their Morah and got busy with various Rosh Hashana centers and projects. Morah Barbara took the class on an alphabet hunt and had a great time finding those letters! Morah Yocheved's girls are learning all about Rosh Hashana and completing their very own Machzorim. Rabbi Roland's boys are ready to be "baalei Tokeia" as they have mastered the tekios (shofar sounds) and made their own shofros! With Mrs. Zadikoff, both Kindergarten classes learned the letter "C" with their special "Handwriting Without Tears" kits and began math lessons. Most of the Early Childhood classes also got an up-close-andpersonal look at where a shofar comes from, thanks to the Majeski family's mounted ram head (which we are pretty sure they didn't hunt themselves...) The best quote of the year so far was overheard last week. When I asked the Kindergarten boys if they were excited for Shabbos, one boy said "Not me! That means I can't come to school!" Baruch Hashem for our amazing teachers! Have a wonderful Shabbos! General Studies It s hard to believe that our next full week of school won t come until the week of October Nonetheless, we have a lot of wonderful things planned for September! The primary event on my radar at the moment is Back-To-School Night (Grade 1-8), scheduled for Wednesday, September 9 (7:00 PM in the Commons). This is a great opportunity for you as parents to put a face to the name of your child s teacher. Back-To-School Night presents us with an opportunity to hear from each teacher and learn a little bit about them and what they teach. It is my hope that you ll come away from the night feeling the same way I do about our faculty these are wonderful, caring people who work hard to make CHDS a great place! See you Wednesday evening!

7 Cincinnati Eizer The September 9 th Eizer deadline is quickly approaching. Please help us make the 5775/20015 Cincinnati Eizer campaign a success by contacting the businesses or vendors you patronize to participate. A sample text and phone message was sent out electronically to make soliciting for the Eizer as easy as cutting and pasting and hitting send. (If you did not get this , please let us know) Please see the flyer at the end of the newsletter. On-Time Arrival A CHDS STUDENT IS SUCCESSFUL WHEN: WW He/She attends school daily and is on time for davening and all classes. He/She gets the proper amount of sleep so that he can be on time for school and function at his best. Main Campus Procedure: Every minute of learning is precious and we want to maximize every second at school. On-time arrival is critical for your child and the rest of the students in their class. At our main campus, school begins at 8:30am (drop-off begins at 8:15). Arrival after 8:30am is considered a late arrival and your child will need a late note. From 8:30-8:40am a hall monitor will be present to monitor the safety of your child and to provide a late note. If your child arrives after 8:40am, a parent must accompany the child to the office to sign them in. Thank you for your partnership in making sure your child arrives on-time! Middle School Girls What a fabulous first full week of school! Classes are off to a great start and girls were super busy learning! The fifth grade girls are really building their dikduk skills! They had a great time making fortune tellers as an activity to help them review and build their ability to decipher questions written in Hebrew. The sixth grade girls started their Lamed Tes Melachos program this week and the girls are looking forward to the beautiful scrapbooks they will be creating this year. The seventh grade girls have been learning about the shalsheles halacha, (where our halachos come from), and the girls are really enjoying having more of a foundation for their learning in dinim. The eighth grade girls had a chance to sit on the other side of the desk in Ivris and put together rules they would use for their own classrooms all in Hebrew! Each class has been in full swing and I strongly encourage parents to come and get a little taste of the middle school at Back to School Night next Wednesday evening. All the adjustments of back to school can be difficult, and I am so proud of how the girls rose to the challenge! I am sure they are ready for Shabbos and they are looking forward to their day off on Monday to rest up for another wonderful week! Spotlight on Third Grade Girls Judaic Studies The third grade girls are off to a fantastic start in their Judaic studies! They created a beautiful bulletin board with their smart cookie recipes, and the girls came up with excellent ideas of they think is the right recipe to succeed in school! They already have created a beautiful Simanim placemat that they are eargely awaiting to bring home for Rosh HaShana. The girls are collecting precious gems in their davening treasure boxes, and the davening in Kitah Gimmel is beautiful to see!
