TURN CLOCKS BACK 1 HOUR MONDAY, NOV 12 NO SCHOOL Menorah Academy students dedicated an entire week to learn about Terry Fox, a great Canadian hero and advocate for cancer research. This year, Mrs. Simons, Menorah s Art Teacher, had students design running shoes and then write their dream. Terry Fox believed dreams are made possible if you try. This year Menorah Staff, Students and Parents raised $350 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Great job! (REMEMBRANCE DAY) After Before The Grade 8/9 Girls explored the acidity and ph of common household substances, like lemon juice, vinegar, windex, and mold cleaner, during their first laboratory of the year. They practiced proper laboratory techniques by removing a sample to test from the main container and ensuring cross-contamination between the samples did not occur. In addition to litmus paper and ph paper, the girls learned what universal indicator is, how to handle it, and how to use it properly. We are looking forward to completing more labs throughout the year! The Grade 5-9 Girls have been very busy painting a mural for Zimra. The teams were divided into 2 groups; tzedaka and tefillah. Each team sketched their own canvas and painted it according to their theme. Their beautiful masterpieces will be hung up in the school.

3 PAGE 3 Math Game Madness in Grade 3! Grade 3 Boys have been hard at work sharpening their rounding skills. We learned how to play Roll n Round, a math game that involves critical thinking, rounding and a little bit of luck! Which math game will we conquer next?!?! Reading in Grade One is as fun as playing a game! Mrs. Glatt s Grade 3/4 Girls invited Kindergarten and Grade 1 to watch their play about the story of Yosef and his brothers. Great job, girls! Pre-K and Kindergarten joined up to make Rainbow Challah. Pre-K students enjoying their weekly Parsha and Hebrew lessons.

4 PAGE 4 Grade 3 Boys have been busy sculpting maps of Alberta. We concluded our unit on the different geographical regions of Alberta and wanted to show off our knowledge through hands on learning! We sculpted every curve, then painted them to show just how many different regions Alberta has! Way to go Grade 3 Boys! Recently, Rabbi Sass met with Amihai Bennett, Director of Chidon Hatanach, and Tal Toubiana from Jewish Federation, to discuss different programs that are available for Menorah students. THE GREAT BIG CHALLAH BAKE Menorah staff and students were proud volunteers at this year s Great Big Challah Bake presented by the Shabbos Project, Menorah Academy and The Edjge. Menorah parents, Mrs. Devorah Kaplan, Mrs. Miriam White and Mrs. Rivka Glatt, organized the event. Thank you to our volunteers and the Fantyasyland Hotel who helped make this event so successful! A special thanks to Yaffa Palti who made a special video just for our Edmonton community!

5 PAGE 5 with Grade 2 is working on drawing symmetry by exploring owls and cows. Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten have begun painting their Topsy Turvy Towns. Grade 8-9 Boys and Girls have completed their pencil tonal studies and will be applying this skill as they begin their still life drawing project. Grade 1 is working on creating contour lines of their feet followed by layering of colour. Grade 6/7 is back from the newly discovered planet of Jabbereocky! Students spent time investigating the ecosystems of the planet s continents to sum up their unit in Interactions and Ecosystems. We are well into our Perspective Drawing Units for Grades 3 through 7. We have completed our practice studies and have begun work on our compositions.

6 PAGE 6 Fall Fun and Fitness The Kinders spent the afternoons enjoying the warm weather at McQueen park with hands-on Fall activities. They explored how nature gets ready for winter, collected fall colours, rolled down the hill, threw leaves in the air and enjoyed a cool snack on the hot days. Hitting the books The Kinders visited the Woodcroft library for Storytime and had a tour of the library before they received their Edmonton Public Library card. After taking their first book on their own card, they practiced their cross-walk safety skills on the busy road outside before returning to Menorah. Kindergarten made special Yom Kippur slippers! We dress in style! Kriah, kriah, kriah! A few of the many games we play to learn our aleph beis and learn how to read! Headbands, bean bag toss, wishing well letters, white and chalk board writing come visit and play a game or two! Like Avraham Avinu loved having guests, we made bruchim habaim signs to welcome our friends.

7 PAGE 7 All aboard!!! The Mitzvah Train is now boarding! Our Nursery class is heading for a great year of learning and play! After the holidays, our students were engaged in all the awesome class activities, learned many new things about the weekly parsha, and practised their fine motor skills. They were cutting with scissors, holding markers properly, painting with a paint brush, and so much more! As part of our Ivrit curriculum, Grade One acted out a story we read in Ivrit about grandparents coming to visit. Awesome acting! The Grade 5 Girls class completing their final experiment for the Classroom Chemistry Unit in Science! In this unit, the girls experienced hands-on learning and had fun working on labs together.

Wizard of Oze An overview of this year s middos program By: Rachelle Boussidan This past month, we had the official reveal of the long-awaited middos program.

The play finds Devorah on a quest to the Wizard of Oze to improve her middos. O n h e r w a y, s h e e n c o u n t e r s M r. Lazerovitch, Mr. Lion and Mrs.

The Wizard of Oze then teaches them, as well as everyone in the audience, what it truly means to have Ozestrength and that we can all improve our middos together.

On every rosh chodesh there will be a different middah. For example, אמﬨ telling the truth, זריזוﬨ - not being lazy, חסﬢ - doing kindness for others and many more!

Then, another grade will decorate an area in our 2D doll house that is on display on the main bulletin board.

These jobs will be rotated and each grade will get an opportunity to complete all of the above.

8 Wizard of Oze An overview of this year s middos program By: Rachelle Boussidan This past month, we had the official reveal of the long-awaited middos program. The program began with a play put on by our amazing teachers and post-seminary girls. But not just any play. It was the Wizard of Oze. The play finds Devorah on a quest to the Wizard of Oze to improve her middos. O n h e r w a y, s h e e n c o u n t e r s M r. Lazerovitch, Mr. Lion and Mrs. Azbanit, who all join her on the journey to improve their middos as well. After a long trip and many laughs along the way, they all make it to the wizard. The Wizard of Oze then teaches them, as well as everyone in the audience, what it truly means to have Ozestrength and that we can all improve our middos together. After the stellar production, there was another big reveal! A five-star doll house, built by our very own Ms. Scheelar! The program will operate as follows. On every rosh chodesh there will be a different middah. For example, אמﬨ telling the truth, זריזוﬨ - not being lazy, חסﬢ - doing kindness for others and many more! Each month will have a different middah that we will all work on together. For every month, there will be a couple of jobs for each grade to complete. This is where the doll house comes in. For every middah each class will have a turn to decorate the doll house with a scene of their choice, that has to do with the middah of the month. Then, another grade will decorate an area in our 2D doll house that is on display on the main bulletin board. Also, a different grade will perform a skit every month. Lastly, a different grade each month will create the cover of our monthly middah booklet. These jobs will be rotated and each grade will get an opportunity to complete all of the above. By the end of the year not only will we have a gorgeous doll house, but we will all have worked on our middos together. It s going to be geshmak! The school is buzzing with excitement as we countdown the days until next month s funfilled action. We can t wait until Rosh Chodesh Kislev so we can begin this amazing program! Stay tuned!
