2 Dear Friends: Let me tell you what I see from the pulpit during High Holyday services. On the one hand, I observe members of the congregation who have come to the services with serious intention and prayerful purpose. I see many of these people reacting with emotion to Avinu Malkeinu and Kol Nidre and other pieces of liturgical music. Sometimes, I hear their voices rising above the rest of the assemblage, as they read the various prayers with an intensity that is remarkable. I notice them leaning forward as I rise to deliver one of my sermons What is the rabbi going to talk about, and will I agree or disagree? You can be sure that the rabbi will hear later that day or week; these are folks who react with seriousness to what is going on in the sanctuary. On the other hand, I also see other kinds of behavior. I see fidgeting. I see some members of the congregation who have dozed off. I know who is talking with whom and who have allowed other purposes and concerns to distract them from the true nature of our gathering on these days. In a sense, I sympathize with this latter group. The High Holyday services are longer than the average Shabbat services and, if you are not accustomed to attending Shabbat, they can seem exceptionally long. There is Hebrew, which some of us can sound out, but which most of us do not understand. The style of the service tends to make the congregation rather passive, listening a lot, responding only with the words that have been preprogrammed in the prayer book. There are lots of words. Lots of words. And the words flow generally from the pulpit out to the congregation, rarely in the opposite direction. In short, someone might very well be excused if he or she got bored or distracted and, sadly, just at the time that a special moment of exaltation and inspiration occurred, was thinking about something else and missed a remarkable moment of Jewish intensity and joy. This year, we are going to do something quite different on the afternoon of Yom Kippur. You may recall that we finish the morning service just after noon and that there is a children s service at 1:15. But then there is a gap until the afternoon service begins at 3:00 P.M. How to fill this hour s gap? I invite you to come into the sanctuary at 2:00 or so in the afternoon and sit quietly in one of the seats. There will be no words, not a single word, not even an introduction. There will be a printed program for those who want it. But what will happen? Ms. Evelyn McCarty, one of our City s outstanding musicians, and her accompanist will share with us a series of selections of the world s finest music. Ms. McCarty plays the oboe and the English horn, two instruments superbly suited to meditation, prayer, introspection. We want to give you this gift of speechless time, time during which you can indulge the depths of your own soul in thought, prayer, or any other mental and personal journey you choose. You can sleep. You can get up and go out or come in again. But you cannot talk. Talking would violate the privacy of your neighbors who are themselves engaged in serious personal pursuits. At the end of the hour, Ms. McCarty will simply leave, and we shall take a short break before the afternoon service begins. I hope that these special moments will turn out to have remarkable meaning for you. What you do with this time is entirely up to you, but it offers you the opportunity to make the day of Yom Kippur intensely personal and powerful. 4 Corpus Christi Community Religious School When you read this month s bulletin, we will be gearing up for the beginning of Religious School. On Saturday, August 28 th, our teachers met with ISJL Education Fellow Molly Glazer for an in-service. Molly demonstrated how bringing enthusiasm into the classroom will directly influence and enhance the students learning experience. Registration for Sunday religious school and Thursday Hebrew School will be on Sunday, September 12 th. Parents and students will meet in the sanctuary at 10:00. After introductions and announcements, students will follow teachers to their classes. Parents will then complete the registration for their children. This year our students will be in Kindergarten through Confirmation. If you are new to our congregation and have children in those grades, please give me a call ( or ) or send an ( susanmartin@bethisraelcc.com ). I am happy to answer any questions you might have. We are also in the planning stage for a fun educational program for 2-, 3-, and 4-year old children. More information about this will follow in future bulletins. I m looking forward to seeing everyone. Shalom! Susan Dear Members of CBI, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE This is the time of the year to look back and also look forward and plan. As President of Congregation Beth Israel, I look back on this past year and I am grateful for our accomplishments. Looking forward I wish to inform you that plans for the coming year are progressing and exciting. We begin our year with Rosh HaShanah celebrating the beginning of creation when G-d gave breath to human beings. At the beginning of time, G-d charged Adam with the responsibility of helping the world reach perfection. Rosh HaShanah is a time for us to reflect on the purpose of creation and resolve to make our lives more meaningful. When we hear the sounding of the shofar with the thrilling blasts we are reminded to awaken and return to G-d. Yom Kippur is a day of fast and a solemn day, but in a subtle way is the happiest days of the year. On Yom Kippur we receive G-d s most precious gifts, the gift of forgiveness and the gift of life. 5 92 nd Street YM-YWHA Program continues this fall! We are delighted to announce that the program begun last Spring of bringing outstanding speakers to CBI via cable connection with the 92 nd Street YM-YWHA in New York will continue this fall. A committee of CBI congregants has selected three outstanding and varied programs for the next few months. We hope you will mark your calendars and plan to be present at the Synagogue to watch the presentations, submit questions to the speakers and to be stimulated by the give-and-take of these outstanding programs. Our first program will be on Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 P.M. (CDT). We are very pleased to announce that our guest on that occasion will be TONY BLAIR, former Prime Minister of Great Britain and now head of the multinational effort to seek a peaceful resolution to the tensions in the Middle East. Mr. Blair has been among the most dynamic leaders of modern times. In his soon-to-be-published memoirs, he discusses the crises faced during his administration and his personal and political journey, charting his successes, controversies and disappointments with unusual candor. This is the first time that Mr. Blair has appeared for such a frank and informal conversation in New York, and we anticipate a very spirited presentation and discussion. The second of our programs will feature TZIPI LIVNI, one of Israel s most high-profile and influential political figures. She served as an officer in the IDF and later in the Mossad, before joining colleagues to create the Kadimah political party in In 2006 she was appointed Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. When the Netanyahu government took power, she became the leader of Kadima and head of the opposition in the Knesset. This program will be aired on Sunday, October 3, also at 7:00 P.M. Finally, as a change of pace, we are thrilled to announce that the third program will feature STEVE MARTIN, interviewed by journalist Deborah Solomon. Frankly, we have no idea what to expect. Martin is an accomplished banjo player, actor and comedian, but also a serious commentator on America s modern culture and society. Fasten your seat belts and hope for the best! This program will take place on Monday, November 29 at 7:00 P.M. All of these programs will take place in the main Sanctuary of Congregation Beth Israel. Thanks to the generosity of friends of the congregation, there will be no charge for admission, and a light refreshment will be served immediately following the program. Everyone, whether member of the congregation or not, whether Jewish or not, is invited to attend. September Annual High Holy Days Food Drive Social Action Committee Congregation Beth Israel will continue our High Holy Day Mitzvot of providing for the needy in our community through helping replenish the Corpus Christi Food Bank. We will be accepting non-perishable food and paper products as well as monetary contributions. Bags, envelopes and directions will be provided at the temple as Rosh Hashanah approaches. All food and monetary donations will be collected between Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot and transferred to the Corpus Christi Food Bank. We all recognize that the current economy has placed tremendous burdens on many Corpus Christi families and unprecedented demands on the Corpus Christi Food Bank and other charitable organizations. This is our collective opportunity as a Congregation to engage in Tikkun Olam --helping to repair the world. All donations small and large are welcomed and appreciated. L'Shanah Tovah!! Jim Gold

6 THE HIIGH HOLYDAYS ARE SPECIAL For many of you at CBI, the High Holyday services are among the spiritual and personal highlights of the year. You come to the congregation with heightened expectations and the anticipation that this will be a time of enrichment and special holiness. We want to make it possible for you to fulfill these hopes by suggesting a series of guidelines for etiquette and decorum during services. MOVING AROUND IS NOT ALWAYS APPROPRIATE There are times during each service when coming into or leaving the sanctuary may detract from the worship experience of others. Among the times when it is proper either to remain at your seat or to refrain from entering are: When the ark is open When the congregation is standing to recite a prayer, silently or aloud During the Mourners Kaddish During the sermon When the Torah is being read SERVICES ARE NOT A PHOTO-OP We strongly urge everyone to refrain from any picture taking during services and to silence cell phones and pagers. If you do expect to be contacted electronically, put your equipment on silent vibrate. Remember also that there will usually be someone in the office who can answer a call and bring a personal message to you. The phone number of the office is MODESTY IS A JEWISH VIRTUE It is a generally-accepted rule of thumb that women s shoulders are to be covered during services. CBI has long had a wonderful tradition of emphasizing the spiritual dimension of the High Holydays and avoiding making this a time for a fashion show. We know we can trust the good sense (seychel) of our members to dress in appropriate clothing. WE LOVE TO SEE OUR FRIENDS but while services are going on it is probably not a good idea to hold a lengthy conversation in the sanctuary. If you want to chat, we ask you to take the conversation into one of the public areas, such as the lounge or outside. THE PRAYERBOOK (machzor) IS ALSO SPECIAL The prayer book for Shabbat is called a siddur; the one for the High Holydays is a machzor. Both are books that contain the distillate of a thousand years or more of Jewish spiritual strivings. We treat these books as holy objects. Among other things we do not do is put them on the floor, fold their pages or otherwise use them in ways that demean their sacred purpose. The same guidelines would apply to the care and handling of tallitot and kippot. CHILDREN: SEEN? HEARD? We adore having our young people at CBI. They bring life and sometimes hilarity into the building. But they can also be distracting to adults who have serious thoughts and purposes on their minds. We ask our parents to help us by supervising their young charges. If they are in the adult services, assist them in knowing how to act in as mature a manner as possible. If they become antsy, take them out and give them time to cool down. Use the child-care program for the younger ones. And, of course, bring the younger ones to the children s services on both Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. In general, good common sense and respect for the sacred quality of the High Holydays, your fellow congregants and the special objects of the Jewish tradition will make the services even more special for everyone. In advance, we appreciate your thoughtful consideration of these guidelines.

7 Dear Friends: Every year, during the High Holydays, Congregation Beth Israel offers its members the opportunity to engage in an additional act of tzedakah by contributing to the High Holyday Appeal. The Board of the Congregation discusses in advance special needs in the congregation, and we want you to know where this year s funds will be applied. Our building is nearly thirty years old. Some of its equipment has been replaced, but there are significant components of our mechanical equipment that are old and are, candidly, held together by duct tape, baling wire and a lot of prayers. In particular, some of our air conditioning machinery is reaching its last usable life-span. During this last summer, we discovered that the fifty-ton unit that cools the Grossman Auditorium was no longer functioning properly. Bids were received to replace it, and we discovered that a new compressor-condenser would cost us in excess of thirty thousand dollars. With the help of Bill Adams and CCAC, we were able to repair the machine for about twenty percent of that amount, but we know that this is only a temporary fix. We are determined to create an escrow fund that will help offset the cost of such a major replacement when it occurs, and a good deal of the money collected during the High Holyday Appeal will be directed toward this purpose. As in prior years, we remain intensely conscious of the financial needs of some of our members. Congregation Beth Israel is committed to a twin idea: no one will ever be kept out of the congregation because of legitimate financial need, but, second, that we shall proactively reach out to our membership when we know them to be facing financial difficulties and try to help. It is with your help that we can make this second ideal become a reality. Rabbi Roseman very privately administers a small fund to help members of the congregation with one-time expenses. We shall be very grateful to you for your generosity this year, as in the past, and pray that you will have a blessed New Year for you and all those who are close and dear to you. 8 YONINA CREDITOR TO RETURN AS GUEST RABBI Rabbi Yonina Creditor will return to CBI to conduct the traditional services for the second consecutive year. Last year, her down-to-earth approach to traditional worship, her sense of humor and her thoughtful comments during the services endeared her to many people, and we are delighted that she has agreed to return. Because of obligations at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, Rabbi Creditor will fly back to her school during the days between the Holy Days, but she will be with us for all the services and observances. These gorgeous protections and enhancements of the Torahs were designed by Rona Train and executed by her, Dottie Heffler, Elinor Roosth and Phyllis Rozen. The breastplates that hang on the Torahs will be installed as decoration within the ark, but they will no longer hang on the front of the scrolls. This change will prevent the screws that protrude from the back of the breastplates from damaging the beautiful needlepoint and decoration of the new covers. The older covers will be carefully stored in the safe that contains all of our unused Torahs and Torah ornamentation, so that we can use them for future occasions. We express our deep gratitude to the four women who so diligently crafted these beautiful covers. They will grace our sanctuary for many years to come. We have recently been informed that Louis Spivak passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 17 three months short of his 98 th birthday. He served as president of B nai Israel Synagogue, president of B nai B rith, vice president of the Corpus Christi district of the Zionist Organization of America, chairman of the Jewish National Fund Drive.

This year, the Kever Avot services will be held on Sunday, September 12, The service at Seaside Memorial Park will be held at 12:30 P.M. The service at Hebrew Rest Cemetery will take place at 1:30 P.M. We encourage everyone who has relatives buried in the cemeteries to join us for this brief service and for the opportunity to memorialize them with prayer and the Kaddish.

14 SPECIAL MOVIE PRESENTATION 100 Voices: A Journey Home, Tuesday, September 21, at the Century 16 theater at 6685 SPID A film entitled 100 Voices: A Journey Home, will be shown on Tuesday, September 21, at the Century 16 theater at 6685 SPID. This film is being shown for one night only in over five hundred theaters across North America, and we are very pleased that it is being screened in our city. 100 Voices: A Journey Home is a compelling and moving musical documentary that uniquely tells the history of Jewish culture in Poland. It highlights the current resurgence of Jewish culture through the personal reflections and musical selections of a group of cantors who made a important pilgrimage to the home of cantorial music. The documentary will give generations the opportunity to learn about and re-embrace the Jewish culture that produced one of the most artistic and educated societies that once flourished in Europe. Above all, the program will celebrate the resilience and the power of Jewish life, while telling the story of two people who shared intertwined cultures. We have not at this time been able to ascertain the exact time of the showing. Please check the newspaper listings, internet information or call the theater at for exact details.
