Henry Lane Hausman Bar Mitzvah Friday, October 31, :30 PM Saturday, November 1, :00 AM Henry Lane Hausman will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah Saturday, November 1, The congregation is cordially invited to join Henry and his family for the oneg Shabbat on Friday and a Kiddush Luncheon on Saturday. Henry is the son of Laura and David Hausman. He has two sisters- Hope and Hannah Hausman. His proud grandparents are Ruth and Jack Cowen, Joann White and the late Henry Roth Hausman. Henry is a 7 th grader in the Athena program at Baker Middle School where he is an honor roll student. He truly lives life to the fullest. He is especially fond of music, animals, the outdoors and sports. He developed a love of baseball at a very early age when his grandfather first taught him to bat. While this is among his favorites he enjoys virtually all sports, he also has a very strong love and appreciation of music. At age 2 he announced that he wanted to play the violin and from that day forward has picked up and played not only the violin but the bass, the mandolin, the piano and, of late, seems to have settled in on the guitar. Henry also loves fishing and surfing and the beach life. He is an animal lover and an observer of nature quick to point out a creature or flower or striking sunset. It is his love of nature and all living things that has determined his mitzvah project. Henry would like to do more to help animals and in particular the injured birds and sea creatures in South Texas. You can help Henry in this endeavor with contributions to The Texas State Aquarium s Bird and Animal Rehab programs. Thank you for celebrating this special occasion with Henry and his family.

2 Dear Friends: On Friday, September 12, we were not supposed to be here. Hurricane Ike (a.k.a. Yitzhak) was aimed straight at Corpus Christi, and we, like just about everyone else, cancelled our weekend activities and prepared to leave town in advance of the storm. Fortunately, the hurricane veered north, and we were spared. Because it was Friday night, I put out a telephone call that we would have a brief service to welcome the Sabbath; about twenty-five people came together to sing and pray. I suspect that all of us felt a deep sense of gratitude that we were not hit by the storm and pleased that we had this chance to come together to express these feelings. In the course of my remarks that evening, I mentioned that the Pilgrims (and their Puritan successors) in seventeenth-century New England took their biblical and Hebrew heritage very seriously. In fact, the myth by which they thought of themselves was a parallel to the story of the Israelite escape from Egypt. For these Protestant dissenters, the King of England and the Church of England were the equivalent of Pharaoh, the oppressors. They, of course, were the Israelites, and the Atlantic Ocean was their Red Sea. New England was their promised land, a place where they would recreate a biblical commonwealth. Massachusetts is still called The Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They named many of the new towns they established with biblical names: Sharon, MA; Bethel, ME; New Canaan, CT and twenty or thirty others. They even named their children with biblical names. Some of these names sound rather mild, like Jonathan and Sarah, but then there were Hezekiah, Melchitzedek and Heptzibah and other names that, today, no parent would ever consider. And they taught Hebrew in every college and university they established. They were making a point: biblical Israel had been reestablished in New England. One of the most interesting features of this new society was the use to which they put the Torah. In 1642 and again in 1644, they published a code of laws. Fully half of the laws they adopted were taken verbatim, word-forword from the Torah. How strange, one might think, that these Protestant Christians based their society on Moses document. But it s not strange at all. Of course, they used the New Testament in their religious life; after all, they were still members, albeit dissenting members, of the Church of England, Christians who took their faith very seriously. The New Testament was their religious bible. But the Hebrew Bible, and the Torah especially, formed the core of their civil life. On the one hand, the New Testament was the book of the Church that had oppressed and exiled them; the negative connotations were significant. On the other hand, when Moses left Egypt and established the first biblical commonwealth, he recorded the laws and procedures of the new society in the Torah; they followed suit, emulating the ancient Israelites as they established what they thought of as the third biblical commonwealth. Ironically, in a distinction the Puritans would not themselves have made, the New Testament was a religious book, but the Torah was the root of their civil, secular society and its laws. When the Pilgrims and their followers sat down to thank God for their survival, they mimicked a festival they found in the first biblical commonwealth, the festival of sukkot. Yes, they modified the details to fit their situation, but the basic idea was the same, and they understood and appreciated the connection. So, when we gather together on October 13 th to observe our sukkot, I hope you will be mindful of the parallelism. Instead of thinking about men dressed in black, with white collars and silver shoe buckles, women in funny-looking bonnets, Indians, corn and turkeys, try imagining a group of immigrants who are seriously trying to recreate a biblical festival on these shores. In a sense, sukkot is the model for the quintessential American holiday, the first thanksgiving, a holiday that we now celebrate toward the end of November, but which was first observed in the booths and sukkot of early New England. 3 Dear Members of CBI, PRESIDENT S MESSAGE This is the time of the year when we gather to reflect on the past year s experiences, seek forgiveness for transgressions and look forward to the New Year. At CBI the new year brings promises of exciting activities and opportunities for us to share with each other. Among the programs being planned are lectures by well-known historians versed in timely issues which Rabbi Roseman is planning in the Spring. In addition we have lectures being scheduled as part of the Rabbi s Sunday Men s Meetings which are open to the entire Congregation. Preparations for Food Fest have started. Please contact Debbie or Jill Jacobs to get more information. Several slots need to be filled. We also need silent auction gifts which we depend on in large part as part of our fund raising. Please call Ann Engel to donate gifts/items for both our silent auction and raffle. We shall also be having our Annual High Holiday Appeal at this time. This year, our High Holyday Appeal is to start an emergency financial aid fund for Congregation Beth Israel members who have fallen on hard times. As in the past on behalf of your Board of Trustees we sincerely appreciate your generosity in giving to this most worthy appeal. Please send in your donation in the envelope provided to you or leave it with Debbie in the office. Finally on behalf of Iris and myself we want to wish each and everyone of you and your families a most heathy and happy New Year and LaShana Tova! Andy Lehrman President CBI CEMETERY SERVICES We have rescheduled the KEVER AVOT services at our two cemetery locations for Sunday, October 5. Kever Avot means the grave of our parents and this memorial service is intended to provide each of us an opportunity to come to the cemetery, remember our departed relatives with honor and dignity and say Kaddish. The service at Seaside Cemetery will be held at 10:30 AM. The service at Hebrew Rest will be at approximately 11:15, depending on how long it takes Rabbi Roseman to get from one side of town to the other. We cordially invite everyone to attend these meaningful, traditional services.

4 A Message from the Family Corner Our next Family Shabbat Dinner is on October 24th. Please join us as we celebrate Simchat Torah. Bring your favorite side dish or dessert, or you may make a donation to help pay for the cost of dinner. April Chessher is our child-care provider on Friday nights. Please remember to sign your children in and out of the child-care room, as we do not want them roaming the halls during services. During the High Holy Days, daycare will be provided as follows: September 29 th (6:45 pm), September 30 th (9:00 am), and October 1 st (8:45 am and 7:15 pm), October 8 th (6:00 pm) and October 9 th (8:45 am). The children will be divided into two groups based upon age. I am always open to hearing new ideas, so please feel free to work with me on creating a fun, safe, creative learning environment for all of our children. 5 ADULT EDUCATION PRESENTS DR. GARY BLUM AND HIS TRAVELOGUE Our members, Gary and Lois Blum spent several weeks this summer in Eastern Europe on a Jewish travel adventure. On Sunday, October 26 at 10:30, Gary will present a program, illustrated with his wonderful photographs, to help us understand Jewish life in this region of Europe. The morning s activities will begin, however, at 10:00 AM in the Grossman Auditorium with a light nosh and beverages. We ll have a half-hour to socialize together; then we ll have the opportunity to learn about Jewish life in this area, an area that was once the heartland of Jewish culture and learning in the world and from which many of our own family members came to the U.S., Canada and Mexico. There is no charge for this program and everyone is invited, including non-member guests. ADL Anti-Semitism Program ` Watch your November newsletter for the announcement of a special program on anti-semitism. On Friday evening and Saturday morning, November 21-22, Rabbi Roseman will talk about the history of Judaeophobia in the U.S. On Saturday afternoon, we anticipate a speaker from the ADL who will describe contemporary hate-group activities. Sunday morning will be the debut of a film, The Monster Among Us, about modern European anti-semitism. This film was produced by the Mandels of Dallas (Remember West of Hester Street?) More details will follow next month. BONDS FOR ISRAEL EVENT ON NOVEMBER 2 Hold the date! Sunday, November 2 at 7:30 PM, Bonds for Israel will host a dessert meeting at CBI with a very distinguished guest speaker. Members of CBI who went to Israel with the Rosemans last February and March will be honored with special certificates. Our guest that evening will be Dr. Gal Luft, executive director of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security and cochair of Set America Free Coalition, an alliance of national security, environmental, labor and religious groups promoting ways to reduce America s dependence on foreign oil. Dr. Luft is a widely-published author and holds a doctorate in strategic studies from Johns Hopkins University. Light refreshments will be served. Everyone is cordially invited. There is no charge for this event. Social Action Committee To offer and promote opportunities for CBI members to engage in Tikkun olam Michelle Arévalo Davila and Diana Stillman, co-chairs CBI s annual High Holydays Food Drive will continue through Sukkot. 7 During my childhood in Detroit, I recall buying Trees for Israel to honor birthdays, Bar & Bat Mitzvah, honoring grandparents, in memory of loved ones and for the holiday of Tu B Shvat, the new year of trees. Israel understood that planting trees would nourish and stabilize the land and, and indeed, the results are remarkable to see. Now Israel s focus is to replant the forests that were recently destroyed in the north of Israel during the war with Hezbollah. To that end there are new certificates noting Operation Northern Renewal Making it Home Again. Our local chapter of Hadassah will feature these attractive certificates for a donation of $12.50 per tree during the coming months. This special way to honor or memorialize someone is welcomed and appreciated by Jews and non-jews alike. Please send your written request with correct spelling of names and addresses, along with your check made out to Hadassah for $12.50 per tree to: Helen Wilk Hadassah-JNF Chair 260 Cape Aron Corpus Christ, TX SERMON IN SONG Have you ever felt overwhelmed, completely stressed out, at a loss for what to do in a difficult situation? It happens to all of us at times. I m supposed to be three places at once with the kids. What do I do? I can t face preparing another Thanksgiving dinner, especially with all the relatives descending on my house and assuming that I ll take charge. Who made me boss, after all? I m supposed to prepare all the financial reports. It s a three-day job, but they just called from the front office and said they need it yesterday. Help! I ve written all my sermons for the High Holydays, except one. But now I m at a loss for good ideas. Where do I go now? On Shabbat Shuvah, Friday, October 3, Cantor Jacqueline Shuchat-Marx will deliver a sermon-insong that will address these kinds of perplexing circumstances. Her topic is OUT OF THE DEPTHS and she will offer us a selection of Jewish music to illustrate how various composers, poets and other authors have proposed to deal with dilemmas and stressful situations. Please join us for Cantor Shuchat-Marx s beautiful music and her message of hope and a better life in the future.

12 HELPING IKE S VICTIMS Rabbi Roseman reports the following: Many of you have already taken one step or another to reach out to the victims of Hurricane Ike. I receive regular calls and s from the Union for Reform Judaism Southwest region, giving me information about the welfare of the several Jewish congregations and communities. Fortunately, the damage was not severe, although the congregation in Galveston will not be able to hold High Holyday services. We have extended a cordial invitation to any of their members who would want to come to Corpus Christi that they join us for services. You ought to know that I received three or four calls from both the URJ and the Central Conference of American Rabbis, asking about our welfare and offering any assistance that we might require. To hear from both Dallas and New York in this fashion, even though we did not need any help, was enormously gratifying and made me very proud to be a member of a movement that cares so much about its member congregations. There is a concrete step you can take to be of real help. You may recall that the Corpus Christi Food Bank sent eighteen semi-trailers full of food and other supplies to Beaumont and Galveston. They deliberately depleted their stocks in order to reach out to the affected communities. Now, we have to replenish our local stock. The CBI Social Action Committee has distributed bags to each member family on Rosh HaShanah, asking that you bring back non-perishable food supplies. Since the Food Bank, essentially on your behalf, has already reacted to the need, now you can respond by filling the bag and bringing it back to CBI before Sukkot. In fact, you can bring more than one bag will hold. The Haftarah for Yom Kippur tells us that one of the acts God especially desires is for us to distribute our bread to the poor. There is no mitzvah these High Holydays that will be more appreciated than your generosity in our HHD food drive. The JCC presents the 3 rd Annual Fall Carnival Tuesday, October 28 th.
