Joshua has been working very hard at his Hebrew studies and we look forward to everyone sharing his special day with us. Joshua has also been making us proud with his school studies. He excels in Math and tested into Algebra in 7th grade. This past year, he also took three other pre-ap classes where he worked hard and did great. Aside from his studies, Joshua enjoys writing stories and video blogging his gaming pursuits. He also amazed us by learning how to solve the Rubik's cube at age 11. Joshua's parents are Kimberly and Eric Yaker. Sarah is his younger sister and Jason is his younger brother. His Grandparents are Claudia and Michael Kondos and Rhoda Yaker. Sadly, we lost Grandpa Gary Yaker right after we relocated to TX just over 2 years ago but he will be with us in our hearts as always. Oneg Shabbat will be on Friday, July 15th at 6:00pm. 3 RABBI S MESSAGE Summer is here and many of us will take the opportunity to catch up on some reading. Jews are known as the People of the Book, and so here are some suggestions for some (reasonably light) non-fiction summer reading on a Jewish theme. For some history there is Thomas Cahill s The Gift of the Jews, part of a series of books by Cahill on how relatively small nations had outsized influence on the progress of civilization. The book traces how a marginalized desert tribe (that would be us!) influenced Western civilization s most deeply held beliefs about God, justice and human nature. In particular he traces how the Jews changed the world from one that believed that time was an unending cycle and human existence merely part of this cycle to one in which time had a beginning and an end and human action made a difference to the world. For those interested in learning more about Israel a great start is Thomas Friedman s From Beirut to Jerusalem. While it is an older book much of what it sets out about the nature of the region and its conflicts stay broadly the same and Friedman describes his travels through the region in a way that is entertaining and insightful. For a more up-to-date view of the Middle East there is Aaron David Miller s The Much Too Promised Land. Miller, a key player in the peace process for three administrations, traces the ups and downs of the peace process and the inner workings of the key players involved. On a more philosophical level Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, the former Chief Rabbi of Great Britain and the Commonwealth, has written many wonderful books but two stand out. The Dignity of Difference explains the importance of pluralism in religion and how we can effectively coexist with other religions by not just finding the similarities between faiths but by better understanding how to appreciate our differences. On a similar theme, his most recent book Not in God s Name explains the roots of the religious violence that plagues us in terms of sibling rivalry between faiths that mistakenly believe that God s love is a zero sum game. Closer to home, there is Rabbi Roseman s most recent book Of Tribes and Tribulations in which he answers significant questions (the tribulations of the title) ofjewish life such as what it means to pray, the nature of covenant and who wrote the bible. We have had the pleasure as a congregation to hear a couple of times from Dr Joel Hoffman and his two most recent books On the Bible s Cutting Room Floor and The Bible Doesn t Say That are wonderful and engaging reading. In the first he describes some of the fascinating books that didn t make it into the Bible and in the second he looks at 40 different mistranslations and misconceptions that have caused us to misunderstand the Bible. Finally a couple of personal favorites. For those who like pirate stories, how about the Pirates of the Caribbean with Jews! In his book Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean Edward Kritzler traces the true swashbuckling history of Jews who, in the aftermath of the expulsion from Spain in 1492, took to the open seas and made alliances with other European powers to to gain riches, ensure the safety of Jews living in hiding, and exact revenge against the Spanish for sending them into exile. And for those, like me, who enjoy comic book superheroes there is Arie Kaplan s From Krakow to Krypton an amazing history of how the Jews created and influenced not only the comic book industry itself but many of the most significant comic book characters we all know and love from Superman to Spiderman, Batman and the Fantastic Four and many others. Have fun over the summer and enjoy reading some (or all!) of these great books. Shavuot Service and Study The Most Famous Jews You ve Never Heard Of! Join us on Sunday morning June 12 for a festival service and study for Shavuot. 9am Shavuot Festival Service 10am Study - The Most Famous Jews You ve Never Heard Of! There have been lots of famous Jews in Jewish history but many of the most interesting ones are ones you have never heard of! Come learn about the Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean and Gracia Mendes Nasi, the independent Jewish business woman of the 16 th Century, who used her wealth and influence to help fellow Jews around the world, and other famous Jews you ve never heard of. 4 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE One year gone by.how can that be??? I think it s been a quick year for our Temple as things have been moving along smoothly, and no major problems have arisen. We are at a time in our Temple year to look both backward, and forward, at the same time. It s evaluation time in so many areas.. short and long term planning is ongoing, but now we write them down so we can actually see What have we accomplished, where we need to go, and how is the best way to get there? Where do we need to improve? What do we need to offer our members? How do we stretch our budget in order to meet all the needs of our congregation, AND prepare for the long term financial security for the Temple, certainly including both our cemeteries? We re reevaluating our programs, looking for new ways to fundraise in order to bring some additional funds into our congregation, new ways to attract new members, new ways to improve attendance at regular Shabbat activities and other activities as well. I solicit your advice and ideas. Many of our congregants have made suggestions that have shown great enthusiasm and been well received by different areas of the Temple. The Men s Club has had a re-birth, and is very successful. The interest and participation of several of our members who have become very involved in our homeless in the community, has been a standout program. The relocation and resettlement of new immigrant families in Corpus Christi has proven very successful as we are working together with Catholic Charities to help with their programs. What s your idea? What suggestion do you have? Our nominating committee has about completed the board for the upcoming year. Thanks, Suzy Hilliard, for heading this committee and to all of you for an excellent job. I look forward to working with the incoming board. Our Sisterhood is busy planning their coming year. Jerri Osberg and the sisterhood membership have made significant financial contributions to the Temple for our ongoing expenses. We give a SINCERE THANK YOU to Sisterhood for their assistance and help. Some suggestions for additional sources of revenue are BINGO Fun nights and possibly a Freezer Sale. Music and Art programs seem to always be a favorite draw and bringing a Klezmer Band to Corpus Christi, or a musical program featuring Rabbi Emanuel and our Choir for an evening of entertainment is also a favorite idea. The Jewish Film Festival was very successful and it has been suggested we continue it next year. Thanks to David Jacobs for chairing this project and coming up with some great films. I m sure YOU could come up with some ideas you would like. Share those ideas with us, please. MARK YOUR CALENDARS.THE ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING IS THURSDAY EVENING, JUNE 30 TH AT 7 P.M. We need you to come and discuss the state of the Temple. It s a fun, informative meeting and your participation is great appreciated. We ll be naming an outstanding CBI member, have something good to eat (not sure what yet, but you can count on it), and support your Temple Please make every effort to come Much more to come in the next couple of weeks. Chris Adler, President Congregation Beth Israel Corpus Christi, Texas The Office will be closed Monday, July 4th Congratulations to our 2016 High School Graduates Maya Hiatt, King High School Holden Hopkins, Ray High School Kyle Kane, King High School Sophie Susser, Ray High School Page 4

5 Corpus Christi Community Religious School Meredith Ryan, Director I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Greg Marks for putting together the Student led Shabbat that occurred on May 13 th. It was such a joy to see the kids up on the Bimah leading the services. I think the kids enjoyed the process and I know that we had a record attendance for the event. Greg has put in a tremendous amount of extra time this year to help enrich our kid s Jewish experience. He took two trips up to Greene Family Camp as a chaperone for the middle school kids. He did this as a volunteer and without his commitment and willingness to drive, many (if not all) of the kids would not have been able to attend. The student led Shabbat was also fully produced by Greg. He is very motivated to create a fun, engaging learning environment for our children and I just want to take this opportunity to thank him publicly for his initiative, drive, enthusiasm and creativity. We are on hiatus from Religious School until September. Once our calendar has been established for the next school year, we will publish the registration and start-up dates for Religious School. I would like to thank all of the parents and teachers for their commitment to the Jewish education of our children. I am honored to be a part of this education process and am looking forward to the new adventures we will have next year. Enjoy your summer! Shalom, Meredith Ryan We are starting to look for a couple of key people to help with Religious School next year. We are in need of some more Sunday School teachers. Please contact Meredith Ryan at rsdirector@bethisraelcc.com if you are interested in learning more information about these positions. Omer Study Two Jews, Three Opinions! The World of the Talmud Jews are well known for arguing and questioning! It is part of who we are as a people and it has strong roots in our religious tradition, especially in the Talmud. This essential Jewish text is the basis of much of what we do and believe in Jewish tradition, and is primarily a collection of rabbinic arguments! Join us as we explore the world of the Talmudic rabbis, how they thought and how they created Judaism as we know it. Begins on Shabbat Mornings of April 30 th 11:00 am -12:30 pm to June 11 th Page 5
