2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE CONGREGATION BETH ISRAEL 4402 Saratoga Blvd Telephone: Fax: congregation@bethisraelcc.com Website: bethisraelcc.com Rabbis Ilan Emanuel, Rabbi Rabbi Kenneth Roseman, Rabbi Emeritus Staff Debbie Bustillo, Office Administrator Jana Zager, Religious School Director Leslie Green, Shabbat Dinner Coordinator CBI Executive Board President Suzy Hilliard First Vice President Chris Adler Second Vice President Mike Hiatt Secretary Chris Kuehn Treasurer Robin Adams Past President Jim Gold Sisterhood Representative Susan Martin Committee Chairs Adult Education Chair Cemetery Chairs Ritual Committee Chairs Membership Committee Chair David Jacobs Robert Adler Carl Kuehn, Gary Blum Andrew Sheinberg Jim Gold Susan Martin As I write this article, we are in the midst of the Fall Holidays. I was pleased to see congregants at the Rosh Hashana services and look forward to seeing more of you at Kol Nidre Services, Yom Kippur Day services, Sukkot and Simchat Torah celebrations. I want to especially recognize Gary Blum, who truly orchestrates the Conservative Services, along with our visiting Rabbi. September seemed busy here, however October can t even compare. In addition to the many special services that we will be preparing for, we are also looking forward to Rabbi Emanuel s formal installation as our Rabbi. Thank you all for welcoming him, Randi and Mira over these past several months. I was pleased at the turnout for the Emanuel s Open House, following Rosh Hashanah and hope even more of your will be on hand to celebrate the official ceremony on October 25. Rabbi Charles Emanuel, Rabbi Ilan Emanuel s father will assist in the official installation, along with several past presidents. In addition, a special Oneg will take place following services that evening. On October 17, we are honored to have Rabbi Roseman fill in while Rabbi Emanuel is out of town celebrating a family Bar Mitzvah. Between holiday observances, Installations and Rabbi Roseman officiating at services, there is plenty to interest our members. As a reminder, The High Holiday appeal is in full swing. Please consider a donation to the Prayer Book Fund and help Congregation Beth Israel purchase an adequate supply of our newly selected prayer book, Mishkan T Filah. For each $50 contribution, you may designate a person to honor with a bookplate affixed in one of the new books. And as if this weren t enough excitement, the smell of cabbage rolls, kugel, rugelach and brisket is in the air. Personally, I can t wait for a steaming hot bowl of Matzo Ball Soup. Consider helping us out this year- This is a community wide project which serves several purposes. I will address our wonderful Food Fest next month. Please keep Congregation Beth Israel in your thoughts as we all continue to reflect on how to make this an even better year. 3 RABBI S MESSAGE Dear Friends: It is probably not a surprise to many that religious institutions, and synagogues in particular, have struggled in the late 20th and early 21st C. We face a new paradigm in which people are more individualistic and consumerist, in which people want to interact with religion as they do with their ipod playlists, to choose what they want, in whatever order they like, and experience it whenever they like, in their own time and at their own convenience. How should we respond to this challenge? In his book Relational Judaism, Ron Wolfson explains that for many years we have tried to appeal to people through programs. We have reasoned that if people are more consumerist then we must interact with them as consumers and act as if we are producing a product like any other. So congregations try to create more and better programs to serve the perceived needs of their members. But it hasn t worked. Why? According to Wolfson: It s not about programming It s not about marketing It s not about branding, labels, logos, clever titles, websites, or smartphone apps It s not even about institutions It s all about relationships If people come to a program but no one talks to them, they do not stay. If they don t make a connection beyond the transactional they do not feel engaged. In trying to create more and better programs as the primary way of attracting more people to the synagogue, synagogues forgot that just because people act more transactionally and more individually that does not negate the deeper yearnings of our souls. What we want is not always what we need. In a world where so much is reduced to a consumer transaction, we truly yearn for relationship with the each other and with God. Wolfson continues to say - When we genuinely care about people we will not only welcome them; we will listen to their stories we will share ours and we will join together to build a Jewish community that enriches our lives. We do much at CBI to create such relationships. I was struck on the first day of Religious School how parents stayed after dropping of their children and chatted while the children studied, sharing stories with new parents and old friends. And our wonderful Food Fest is not just a great program with delicious food (although it is that!). Hearing stories about previous festivals it is clear that what truly makes this a wonderful event is the opportunity to connect with each other over planning and cooking, deepening relationships with old friends and making new friends over brisket, cabbage rolls, and matzah balls! Like all Jewish institutions in America we have to look at how to better connect to people as we live our lives today. CBI already does so much in this regard and it is part of what makes this such a special place to be. But we can always do more! This New Year, may be go from strength to strength as we ensure that we are a place in which we can all feel welcome and where we can all build deeper relationships with our tradition, with each other, and with God. Ilan Emanuel, Rabbi Page 3

4 CBI Sisterhood Wonderful holidays are here and Sisterhood is busy preparing for the holidays and for the year. During the Days of Awe, as we engage in prayer, self-reflections, and repentance, let s resolve to make a difference! Let the sounds of the shofar awaken your soul. Re-commit yourself to a great People and a great Nation. Prime Minister Netanyahu sent the following message to ALL the people in Israel as well as ALL of the soldiers in the field: This has been an especially challenging year for all Israelis and especially for the members of the Military. We need only to look at the television or read the news to see how challenging it has been. As we begin our 10 days of judgment, blow the shofar, and dip our apples in honey, let s try and remember our sister and brothers in Israel who are facing severe times every day. Keep them in your prayers and hold on to thoughts of peace in Israel and throughout the world. Beyond the holidays, we are deep into preparations for our Food Fest that will be held November 15 and 16. Of course much more will be forthcoming about Food Fest in the next few weeks. Our kitchen has a grand new facelift and we have already begun cooking on new appliances. May your New Year be filled with the sweetness of new friendships, good health, prosperity, and peace. 5 Family Corner L'Shana Tova to All! Our first Family Shabbat Dinner brought a packed house! Rabbi Emanuel and Diana Stillman brought new life to our Shabbat service with their uplifting spirit of song and guitar. It warmed my heart to see everyone and to welcome all the new families to our congregation! The ice cream bar was a big hit with young and old alike, and we will definitely do it again! Please mark your calendar for the next Family Shabbat Dinner on Friday, October 10 th. Services will begin at 6:00 pm, we will also be celebrating Sukkot and dinner will immediately follow, so it will be double the fun. If you have a favorite recipe you'd like to share and some free time on your hands, why not join me in the kitchen and let's create something new together! Shoot me an or give me a call. As I mentioned in the previous bulletin, each month, I will highlight one fund to feature. Please keep these various funds in mind as you make contributions to our congregation and earmark your payment if you want your contribution made to a particular fund. The Adler Family Camp Scholarship Fund Chris & Robert Adler established this scholarship in 2004 to support participation of our youth in Jewish camp experiences. As you may remember, this fund was in the spotlight last year as part our High Holiday appeal. Although we were able to collect quite a bit of monies last year, we are always in need of additional funding. Last summer we partially sponsored nine children to attend Jewish camps throughout the United States. With so many children wishing to attend camp, I encourage you to continue to donate to this fund. We love being able to support our youth as they continue to immerse themselves in Judaism. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or Suzy Hilliard. Robin Adams, Treasurer Page 5
