Star Wars was an adrenalin fueled rush of action telling a rousing, if simplistic, tale of good vs evil. Star Trek, on the other hand, was always more cerebral. Sure there was action, but baked into its DNA by its creator Gene Roddenberry was a sense of social conscience, presenting stories that were allegories for real world issues such as racism, drug addiction and war, that could only get through the 1960 s TV censors if the stories were set on other worlds. So, while Star Wars was lots of fun, Star Trek was always my example to skeptics of why sci-fi was not just escapism but a means of expressing moral lessons in a creative way. Watching the new Star Trek movie I was reminded of one of the most enduring lessons of the Star Trek series and one that has great relevance to synagogue life the importance of community. The central message of Star Trek has always been the importance of belonging, of supporting others, accepting support from others, and finding meaning in being part of something larger than yourself. Or as the character of Scotty says in his thick Scottish brogue in the recent movie: You canna break one stick in a bunch. In days gone by community was essential because, in the face of the many dangers of the world such as prejudice and pogroms, it was in fact safer in a bunch. Today, while we still sadly live in a dangerous world, most of do not rely on our community for safety. But, in an atomized individualistic world we still need community to give us a sense of belonging and meaning beyond ourselves. Where our ancestors bunched together for physical security and support against our enemies, today we bunch together today for emotional support and spiritual security. In a congregation we support each other, in good times and in bad. We are there for each other as we celebrate our joyous occasions and to help heal and comfort each other in times of sadness and struggle. In a synagogue community we are able to find greater meaning in our lives through connection with God when we pray and study, through connection with each other as we engage in communal activities, and through connection with the world with social action and involvement in the larger community. All congregations fulfill this function but our congregation does so especially well. We are a wonderful place filled with wonderful people, that welcomes all and makes all feel included. May we long continue to be a place to connect to community, to meaning and to purpose for all those who walk through our doors. Rabbi Ilan Emanuel RABBI S MESSAGE

3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Friends.Experiencing the dog days of summer is standard for all of us. Seems we are getting a double dose of hot and dry days. I hope you are all staying well and staying inside as much as possible. Several of our Temple youth are away at camp right now, and enjoying the programs that have been planned for each of them. I m sure you re missing your children (??), but know they are having great times with other Jewish children at sleep away camps. It s a great experience for them to spend time in an all Jewish atmosphere. The experiences they have at summer camp are life changing and will stay with them all their lives. Several of us attended a program at Del Mar College this week. Dr. Bryan Stone, professor of history at the college for the past 12 years, presented a lecture and program for the community. He has recently collaborated with some Texas families and published a book on Memories of Two Generations: A Yiddish Life in Russia and Texas. It was an excellent presentation and the 50+ attendees enjoyed hearing about the steps taken by Russian families who came to San Antonio in the 1800s, set up business and communities, then spread to other parts of Texas. We spoke to Dr. Stone about conducting an Adult Education program for us at CBI. He is delighted to come and speak to us, and we will make definite plans for his presentations in the Fall. Joshua Yaker was called to the Torah and became a Bar Mitzvah Saturday, July 16. The Yaker family hosted a delightful lunch following the Bar Mitzvah. Congratulations to Josh and the Yaker family. Be sure and notice the newly updated Menorah wall in front of our Temple. Mike Trimyer and the Fine Arts Committee met on several occasions and chose the tiles and colors, and are responsible for updating this structure facing Saratoga. Sisterhood Kickoff meeting will be Thursday, August 18 at Ginger Café. Mark your calendars now to attend this fun event. Also, it s time to pay your Sisterhood dues. Our first NEW CBI BOARD meeting will be Wednesday, August 24. You will be receiving more information about this soon. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Try to attend services on Friday Evening at 6 p.m. and/or Torah Study on Saturday. We need YOU. Chris Adler, President Congregation Beth Israel Page 3

4 SOCIAL ACTION CARE BAGS: The annual Resource Fair for the Homeless and Insecure housing folks will be held September 14 th at the Mother Theresa s Day Shelter. The Social Action Committee of CBI will be delivering Care Bags for distribution during that fair. There is a large basket under the table just inside the main door to CBI if you have items that can be used for the Care Bags. We are particularly looking for items such as deodorant, shaving crème, soap, shampoo, new wash cloths, new socks, razors, chap stick, Kleenex, dental items, etc. Even lightly used school back packs would be welcome. Contact Sue Williams ( ) for more information. She will be happy to pick up items if you are unable to bring them to the temple. FOOD BANK: Just a reminder that there is a barrel at the front entrance for non-perishable food items for the Corpus Christi Food Bank. Sue Williams ( ) will be happy to pick up items if you are unable to bring them to the temple. 5 Corpus Christi Community Religious School Meredith Ryan, Director I wanted to take this opportunity to formally announce that Manuela Sela is going to be my co-director for Religious School. Manuela will be in charge on Sundays during Religious School and I will be handling the administration side of the job. I am very excited to be working with Manuela and I know that she is the perfect addition to our Religious School team. The summer has flown by and it is time to gear up for our Religious School Year. Please mark your calendars for September 11 th. This will be our first day of Hebrew and Sunday School. We are already planning visits with our ISJL fellow, researching Greene Family Camp dates and planning out fun activities for the school year. We hope you have enjoyed your summer and we look forward to seeing you on September 11 th. Shalom, Meredith Ryan RABBI KENNETH ROSEMAN INVITED TO SPEAK The Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati has invited Rabbi Roseman to be the speaker at this year s opening-of-school academic convocation. The convocation will be attended by rabbinic and graduate students, faculty, Board of Trustee members and representatives from the Cincinnati Jewish community. The festivities will begin with a gala dinner on Tuesday, August 23. His talk at the Wednesday morning service will be followed by a luncheon and then another festive celebration that evening at the campus Jewish museum. Rabbi Roseman was chosen for this honor because he combined in his five decades of rabbinic service both academic and congregational involvements. He served as Dean of the Cincinnati school for eight years, led an international program research and development institute on behalf of North America s Jewish federations and has taught at the University of Wisconsin, SMU and TAMU- CC. He has written or edited twelve books, four of which have received prestigious recognition, and numerous articles. He has also served congregations in Madison WI, Dallas and Corpus Christi. Wherever the Rosemans have lived they have been active leaders in the Jewish and general community; Rabbi Roseman is currently chair of the Board of the Art Museum of South Texas. Congratulations to Rabbi Roseman on this distinguished invitation, and kudos to CBI that he and Phyllis remain active among us. Page 5

7 Family Shabbat Dinner Shalom Everyone, Hopefully, you have all been enjoying your summer with friends and family, relaxing, vacationing, and even getting some home projects done. Can you believe a new school year starts a month from today? The boys and I are never ready for the lazy days of summer to end! We have all the dates for our Family Shabbat Dinners planned for the upcoming year! Our first dinner will be on September 9 th. Services will begin at 6:00 pm and dinner will follow. Make sure to read your CBI Newsletter for the upcoming monthly dinner dates, holiday schedules, as well as all the activities planned for the coming year. This is going to be a great year at CBI! I can't believe I'm entering my 6 th year cooking for all of you time really flies!! Please consider giving up some of your free time to help me in the kitchen once a month... it's pretty lonely in there all by myself! To some of our NEW members, going behind the scenes is a great way to make new friends, stay connected and get involved in our CBI family! I'm always researching new menu ideas, but I must admit, after 5 years, I sometimes get stuck. It would be wonderful to have your input for new recipe ideas. Have a favorite main dish, salad or side that you love? Just let me know and I'd be happy to make it! As a reminder, I will continue to provide kosher style meals, keeping dairy and meat separate. Wishing y'all a fabulous rest of the summer and before you know it, we will be breaking bread together once again!
