Kyle Austin Kane Bar Mitzvah Friday, October 15 th at 7:00 pm Saturday, October 16 th at 9:00 am Kyle Kane will lead Friday night services on October 15 th and will be called to the Torah as a Bar-Mitzvah on Saturday morning October 16th. Kyle is the son of Marcie and Leslie Kane. He is the grandson of Ruth Kane and the late Cantor Bernard Kane. He is a 7 th grader at Baker Middle School who enjoys playing baseball and is currently on the Baker football team. He loves reading, snowboarding, and playing tennis. But most of all he likes hanging out with his two best friends, his cats. For the past five years he has spent his summers at Camp Young Judaea. Please join the Kane Family as they celebrate this happy occasion with an Oneg Shabbat on Friday evening, and a Kiddush luncheon following Saturday morning services.

2 Dear Friends: On the second day of Rosh HaShanah, I joined about twenty-five other members of CBI for traditional services in the morning. There was a lively spirit, much singing, and Rabbi Yonina Creditor kept up a spritely pace that moved the service with enthusiasm to a conclusion that was earlier than some of us expected. There was a good feeling of camaraderie among this community of worshippers. Still, I found myself reading and rereading some of the prayers in English that are found in the Silverman High Holyday prayer book, the Mahzor. This volume was published in 1951, exactly sixty years ago. The language is dated. No one uses thee or thou any more, nor do we end our verbs with est, as in sayest. That kind of expression is stilted and does not resonate with modern linguistic usage. Each generation finds it necessary to update the prayer book. In our liberal services, I noticed that the very recent edition of Gates of Repentance that I ordered after last year s Yom Kippur (when my really old one fell apart) used Eternal One instead of other names for God like King or Sovereign. The Conservative movement has just published a new High Holyday prayer book called Lev Shalem, [With a] Whole Heart. The editorial committee decided to omit the word salvation because people don t have a clear sense of what it means, and they chose to no longer use the word awesome to describe God, primarily because it has been tarnished by its slangy use in Valley Girl talk. The criteria of the Conservative editors, much like the criteria of the Reform Jewish editors, centered around two ideas: keeping faith with the traditional practices while, at the same time, addressing what congregations and modern, liberal Jews want and need. Those two criteria sometimes complement each other and sometimes are in conflict. Consider the Al Cheyt recital of Yom Kippur in Gates of Prayer. It is updated to include both the traditional sins of pride and interpersonal malice, but also more modern transgressions, like pollution, governmental corruption and neglect of urban improvements. On the other hand, there are limits imposed by traditional Jewish practice about how short the service can be and, equally, by expectations of congregants about what would be a satisfying and sufficient ritual observance. What is crucial, however, is to note that every prayer book, whether traditional or liberal, reflects the social context in which it is to be used and the people who will hold it. The contexts change and the people change, so the prayer book itself has to change to be at all relevant to the realities of the lives of Jews. And yet, paradoxically, the change is largely cosmetic. At base, the values and ideas that are reflected in Jewish prayer books are the same that have characterized our worship for the last fifteen hundred years or more. These values and ideas may be present in modern clothing, but they are the identical ones of which our ancestors spoke on their special days and of which we continue to speak on our High Holyday days. There is something comforting and reassuring that, in the midst of all the flux and change of modern life, the values of Judaism persist to motivate and inspire our lives for a new year. 3 TZIPI LIVNI SPEAKS AT CBI ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3rd The satellite connection with the 92 nd Street YMHA-YMWA continues as we host Israel s former foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, on Sunday, October 3 at 7:00 P.M. in our Sanctuary. Through the miracle of electronic communication, we shall be able to be part of the audience of this live broadcast and to submit questions that may be selected to be posed to and answered by Ms. Livni. Tzipi Livni is the leader of the opposition Kadima party in Israel s Knesset. When that party was in power, she served as foreign minister. She will speak to the current state of World Jewry and, particularly, to contemporary challenges facing the State of Israel. BRANDEIS WOMEN AND CBI COLLABORATE TO HOST SPEAKER On Wednesday, October 20 at noon, Dr. Bryan Stone, Associate Professor of History at Del Mar College, will speak to us about his new book, The Chosen Folks: Jews on the Frontiers of Texas. He will explore how Jews arrived in this state and sought to forge a dual identity, becoming part of the Texas culture and, simultaneously, retaining their Jewish roots and passions. He will deal with how Jews coped with the frontier and its distinctive mentality, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and the emergence of the State of Israel after the destruction of the Holocaust. Dairy Covered Dish Luncheon at CBI No charge for this event RSVP or nedradl@aolcom *Books will be available for purchase at the special price of $35.00 Dixie Lee Oshman is pleased to announce that she will be featured as "Artist of the Month" for October at Stingers Coffee at 1304 Airline Road in the Gulfway Shopping Center. Her macro and abstract plant photography and greeting cards will be available for viewing and for sale the entire month. The wonderful folks at Stingers will also graciously host an artist's reception for any and all who wish to attend on Saturday, October 16, 2010, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Please drop by to support Stingers and Dixie in their business and creative ventures!

4 Corpus Christi Community Religious School Our religious school is off to a wonderful start! We began our first session on Sunday, September 12, 2010, with a meeting in the sanctuary for students, parents, and teachers. Following introductions and discussion, teachers took their students to classrooms and parents went to the auditorium for registration and coffee. Teachers for this year s Sunday sessions are Elisa Cox Kinder/First, Rikki Schmitchel Second/Third, Chelsea Eisenberg (Amanda McKinley Assistant) Fourth/Fifth, Brian Honigbaum & Dave Ryan Sixth/Seventh/Eighth and Rabbi Roseman - Confirmation. Hebrew School teachers are Laurie McKinley, Shiri Tenenbaum Balderan, and Rabbi Roseman. Consecration will be held prior to Simchat Torah services on Friday, October 1 st. Consecration will begin at 5:30 PM and Shabbat services will begin at 6:00PM followed by our Family Dinner at 7:00pm. We hope you will share this special occasion with our young people. We have two camp rallies this month. Yael Twito from Camp Young Judaea in Wimberley will be here on Sunday, October 10 th, and Stefani Rozen from Greene Family Camp will be here on Sunday, October 31 st. Both rallies will begin at 11:15. Parents are invited to join us. We welcome our returning students as well as the new additions to our school family. Happy New Year to everyone! Shalom! Susan A Message from the Family Corner As many of you may have noticed, our Shabbat dinners have a new twist! When possible, we are combining the Shabbat dinners with the Sisterhood Cookbook tasting. When you bring a dish to these dinners, you have the option to submit that recipe to the cookbook committee. All you have to do is bring the dish and the recipe to the Shabbat dinner. That's it! It's that easy. We have already had our salad dinner and this month we are going to have our side dish tasting. Susan Martin and Iris Karas are working on a main course for the meal, all you have to do is bring along your favorite side dish. We thank you for your efforts and look forward to seeing you on Oct. 1st. As always, please remember that if you would like to have your child utilize the childcare during services, please make sure to check them in and out. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Meredith Ryan at Shalom Meredith Ryan RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES Sunday School 10:00 am October 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 Hebrew School 4:30 pm on Thursdays October 7, 14, 21 & 28

5 Please join us Friday, October 8th for the Friday Night Oneg to Honor the birthday of Mac Cohen Card of Thanks All of us who were at the High Holyday services (both traditional and liberal) appreciate the participation of so many of our fellowcongregants. Your readings and efforts to make the Holyday worship more meaningful helped all of us have a very special time in the synagogue. And we also apologize to several members of the congregation whose letters inviting them to participate were garbled and gave them erroneous instructions. We ll try to do better next year! After all, that s what repentance and atonement are all about. HIGH HOLYDAY FOOD COLLECTION It has been traditional to make a donation of food to the Corpus Christi Food Pantry during the High Holydays. This is to fulfill the Haftarah that we read from Isaiah that said that what God wants, in part, is that we distribute our bread to the poor. If you have not yet contributed, there is still time. We shall not take our collected food to the pantry until October 11th. Please fill up a bag or just bring something that is non-perishable and leave it off at CBI. If you would prefer, you can write a check and we shall see that it is delivered to the CCFB, where they can use it to purchase food of their choice.
