JEWISH COMMUNITY HOUSING CORPORATION Every year the Residents Association Presidents and Vice Presidents are invited to a forum at one of our JCHC buildings. This year the forum was held in our Community Room on Wednesday, May 11. The forum was hosted by our COO, Laurie Loughney. Lunch was served and a very enlightening meeting was held. The Association Presidents and VPs discussed various ways of improving on activities that they are having in their buildings, or giving suggestions for new activities. Also in their discussions they spoke about were concerns from the residents that they hear about through their Association meetings. It is always a highly anticipated event that the Presidents and VPs look forward to each year. KIDS COOKIES CONCERTS THE GOLDA OCH ACADEMY Twice a year we have the pleasure of inviting the children from Golda Och Academy to spend some time with the residents. They are very excited to get on the bus and come to our building, and since they do it twice they get to spend time with the same people that they previously met and we get to see how much they have grown. The children came on Friday, May 27th, they are 1st graders and boy are they smart. All the children sang a song naming all of the states in alphabetical order, they also have a song for all the Presidents starting with Washington and ending with Obama. We really enjoy their visit. 4 B nai B rith Celebrated Older Americans Month, May On Tuesday May 26, the residents at B nai B rith enjoyed an ice cream social. In particular, we hold in high esteem and respect our very own resident Irving Roseman who was a gunner in WWII. Funny Sayings and Messages By: Rob Wa Funny sayings provide you and friends with chances to laugh, raise self-awareness, or mitigate a tough mood. The selection of funny quotations, sayings, and phrases offer a perspective on how authors in the past have faced love, live, and challenges with humor and laughter. Reciting these hilarious quotations and sayings can be a great means of giving advice or relieving a tense mood. "With my wife I don't get no respect. I made a toast on her birthday to the best woman a man ever had. The waiter joined me." Rodney Dangerfield "If men can run the world, why can t they stop wearing neckties? How intelligent Is it to start the day by tying a little noose around your neck?" -Linda Ellerbee "Sudden love takes the longest time to be cured." Charles Saint-Evremond "Money does not grow on trees. You have to beat the bushes for it." "Love is like a beautiful song--only the lyrics are all screwed up." -Humorous Anonymous "Success has ruined many a man." Benjamin Franklin "Don't fall for anyone--unless they are willing to catch you." "Depend on the rabbit's foot if you will, but remember that it didn't work for the rabbit." -Funny Sayings "No man is truly married until he understands every word his wife is NOT saying." - Anonymous "Love is like the measles--all the worse when it comes late in life." -DW Jerrold "Marrying for money is the hardest way to earn it." "Success gives some people big heads, and others big headaches." Talk does not cook rice." -Chinese Proverb "Creditors have better memories than borrowers." PAGE 4
A MESSAGE FROM RABBI KAPLAN With the coming of our Jewish festival of Shavuot, the "Pilgrimage Holiday of Weeks", or Pentecost, we realize that the spiritual year is complete according to the lunar calendar. In 5776, we began with Sukkot, the Fall "Harvest of Tabernacles", then welcomed Spring with Pesach, the "Feast of Unleavened Bread", and now celebrate the final agricultural season of early summer, Chag HaBikurim, the "Festival of First Fruits". Counting the Omer, that Biblical 50-day period of time between the barley and wheat offerings to the holy Jerusalem Temple, now reminds us of G-d's bountiful blessings we continue to enjoy in our own day. As well, and perhaps more importantly and meaningful for us as contemporary Jews, is the additional significance of Shavuot as Z'man Matan Torateinu, the "Time of Our Receiving the Torah". It is this third of the three Pilgrimage Festivals that is celebrated in synagogue, as opposed to Sukkot and Pesach which are both more home-centered observances. In many congregations, students commemorate the milestone of Confirmation, at the tenth-grade level of their Jewish education, when they truly come to understand and more deeply appreciate Jewish learning and identity since their B'nai Mitzvah several years earlier. On Shavuot morning, these 15 year-old young men and women prepare to read the Ten Commandments as found in Shemot, The Book of Exodus, or Devarim, The Book of Deuteronomy. These enduring, foundational teachings of Judaism, indeed for the world as well as for us as Jews, hopefully inspire the students to live their lives according to the most basic tenets of our faith and people. So, too, for all of us as we consider the lessons we have studied all year long together. May we continue to enjoy celebrating Shabbat each Friday morning throughout the summer months, imparting and receiving knowledge and inspiration from one another. I look forward to seeing you during June, July and August. Be healthy, keep safe, and stay cool. My very best to all of you! Chag Sameach, Moadim L'simcha!! Rabbi Ronald W. Kaplan PAGE 5
June Greetings from Bryna Summer is almost here and with it comes warm weather. Before it gets too warm, I would suggest that you put your air conditioners on to make sure that they are running properly. Please call the office if you are experiencing any difficulty. Remember to keep yourself hydrated during the warm and muggy summer days. Make sure you keep water accessible during the day. Having water with your meal is a good way to make sure that you are keeping hydrated. Sara is back from Florida! Come to the Community Room on Tuesdays at 1:00 pm for arts and crafts. Please join our new exercise teacher Tami. She is here every Wednesday at 12:00 pm in the Community Room. It s a chance to improve your physical and mental well-being. Tami s classes are low key and open to all. Our Friends and Family celebration is this month, date and time to be announced. As always, we are looking forward to it. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Bryna Stone Site Manager PAGE 6

Summertime Weather Dangers...How to stay Safe Summertime can bring a range of weather challenges and potential dangers. Some of these threats can occur with little warning, so do what you can to prepare by assembling an emergency kit and forming a plan of action. Find out what you should do if faced with the following weather dangers: Lightning: In the U.S., lightning kills more people each year than tornadoes and hurricanes. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance and should seek shelter in an enclosed building or vehicle. While indoors, don't use a corded phone, a computer or other electrical appliances; and avoid contact with plumbing (don't shower, wash hands, do laundry, etc.). Floods: If you have time, move essential items to an upper floor. Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water. Do not walk through moving water that is six inches or higher. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground. Hurricanes: If you can't evacuate, get inside and secure external and internal doors. Stay away from windows and doors and take refuge in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level. Tornadoes: Storm cellars and basements are the safest locations, but if they aren't available, go to an interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level. Stay away from windows, doors, outside walls, and corners. If you are in a trailer or mobile home, go to a sturdy, nearby building. Extreme Heat: Stay indoors as much as possible. Consider spending the hottest part of the day in an air-conditioned public building, such as a library or shopping mall. Never leave children or pets alone in vehicles. Wildfires: If your home is threatened by a wildfire, you must evacuate. If you have time, bring an emergency kit that includes copies of important documents. Earthquakes: If you are indoors, stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls and get under a sturdy table or desk. If you are outside, keep away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. If you're in a moving vehicle, safely stop the vehicle in an open area and stay inside. PAGE 8
A NOTE FROM LAVINIA WALKER co-president of the SOUTH ORANGE B NAI B RITH FEDERATION HOUSE RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION In the words of the poet: What is so rare as a day in June? Then if ever come perfect days. They really are just about perfect. In spite of a few days to the contrary, most days are not too hot and the nights are comfortable. June days are the days we looked forward to all winter! We have days free of snow, ice and bitter cold winds. We can enjoy flowers and the beautiful canopy of green leaves overhead for shade. These are precious days when we can live the winter dreams the things we thought we d do if it weren t so difficult to get around. We are liberated to travel either to take a vacation trip to sight-see and/or to visit friends or family. These are the days to put into action the things we have held in the back of our minds and maybe in our hearts. These precious June days call us to live in the present. Winter is past and summer will officially be upon us June 20th. We can expect some hot days that may cause us to flee to the air-conditioning. Now is the time to enjoy outdoors maybe lunch with a friend at an outdoor restaurant, enjoy a concert, an evening at the theater, a walk in the park (we ve been promising ourselves we will walk more), maybe this is the time to repot some plants, maybe buy some new ones. Enjoy these plesant June days for all they re worth and take advantage of some of the may programs offered to us here. June 14th is Flag Day. Did you know the first national flag was all handsedwn by Betsy Ross in June 1776? The flag has grown over the years added more stars for states, but has the same thirteen stripes for the original colonies and has been a symbol of national pride in our country. It stands for all we treasure in freedom to worshop as we choose, freedom of speech, press and assembly, to know trail by a jury of our peets, to advance ourselves by free enterprise, to govern ourselves without tyranny and maintain sovereignty among the nations. Remember Father s Day on June 19th. Appreciate the good they did, the effort they put forth to help us and forgive their failures. Encourage young men to be the good fathers children need. Let us live in and thoroughly enjoy the present! PAGE 9
