1 Today s chuckle: A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire, which hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking all this in. Then, after pausing to ponder all of this, she told her grandmother, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!" 3 THE HANDWRITING ON THE WALL A weary mother returned from the store, Lugging groceries through the kitchen door. Awaiting her arrival was her 8 year old son, Anxious to relate what his younger brother had done. While I was out playing and Dad was on a call, T.J. took his crayons and wrote on the wall! It s on the new paper you just hung in the den. I told him you d be mad at having to do it again. She let out a moan and furrowed her brow, Where is your little brother right now? She emptied her arms and with a purposeful stride, She marched to his closet where he had gone to hide. She called his full name as she entered his room. He trembled with fear he knew that meant doom! For the next ten minutes, she ranted and raved About the expensive wallpaper, and how she had saved. Lamenting all the work it would take to repair, She condemned his actions and total lack of care. The more she scolded, the madder she got, Then stomped from his room, totally distraught! She headed for the den to confirm her fears. When she saw the wall, her eyes flooded with tears. The message she read pierced her soul with a dart. It said, I love Mommy, surrounded by a heart. Well, the wallpaper remained, just as she found it, With an empty picture frame hung to surround it. A reminder to her, and indeed to all, Take time to read the handwriting on the wall. 4 WELFARE By Bill Spindler Roving Reporter Under the law of Moses there was no official welfare system such as we have in the United States today. Yet the poor people in Israel were well protected by commands in the law. God seemed to pay a great deal of attention to the widows, orphans and strangers living among the Israelites! The poor could go into their neighbor s vineyard and eat their fill, but they could not take any grapes home with them! They could walk through a grain field eating grain as they went, but they could not cut any grain stalks to carry with them! No one needed to go hungry in the Promised land! The Israelites were instructed to charge NO INTEREST on money borrowed from them, but they could receive interest money from strangers! (Deut. 23:24,25) If an Israelite worked for his neighbor all day he was to be paid before sunset, he might need the money to buy supper for his family! (Deut. 24:15) Talk about living from day to day! No wonder the apostle Paul said Christians should be content with having just food and clothing. But God has blessed most of us with much, much more! God s people were not to take a poor person s cloak for a pledge. They would need it during the coming cold night. God says they should remember that they were slaves in Egypt where THEY were taken advantage of! (Deut. 24:18) When the fields were harvested in Israel they were to leave a few sheaves of grain on purpose for the poor and hungry. After all they had no welfare office to call for a food voucher!!! If we love our poor neighbors, we will help them! HELP YOURSELF TO HAPPINESS Everybody, everywhere seeks happiness, it s true, But finding it and keeping it seem difficult to do. Difficult because we think that happiness is found Only in the places where wealth and fame abound. And so we go on searching in palaces of pleasure Seeking recognition and monetary treasure, Unaware that happiness is just a state of mind Within the reach of everyone who takes time to be kind. For in making others happy we will be happy, too. For the happiness you give away returns to shine on you. - Helen Steiner Rice ***************************** Bill: Throw away the outside and cook the inside, then eat the outside and throw away the inside. What is it? Diane: Corn on the cob because you throw away the husk, cook and eat the kernels, and throw away the cob.
5 Kids' Kwotes "Close the curtains," requested a tot, sitting in a pool of bright light. "The sun's looking at me too hard." Someone asked a youngster when he would turn 6. He replied, "When I'm tired of being 5." Seeing her first hailstorm, a 3-year-old exclaimed, "Mommy, it's raining dumplings!" As her gramma frantically waved away a pesky fly with a white dishtowel, the granddaughter observed, "Maybe he thinks you're surrendering." When a child heard that her aunt just had a baby and it looked like her uncle, she said, "You mean he has a mustache?" While shampooing her son, age 4, the mom noted his hair was growing so fast he'd soon need it cut. He replied, "Maybe we shouldn't water it so much." When complimented on her vocabulary, the 5-year-old nonchalantly responded, "I have words in my head I haven't even used yet." His mom informed Brian that she was going outside to get a little sun. "But Mommy," he gulped, "You already have a little son -- me!" When a boy reported two look-alike classmates at school, his parents said they were probably twins. The next day, he came home all bubbly and said, "Guess what? They're not only twins, they're brothers!" ******************************** After being retired for a couple of years and completing all the jobs my wife had lined up for me, I began to feel somewhat useless and decided to enroll in a couple of courses at the local adult-education school. I noted, upon registration, that there was no tuition fee for a person over 60. As I handed my tediously-filled-out papers to the clerk, I announced, "I'm 63." Then, pulling out my wallet, I asked if she wanted to see my driver's license. She replied, "No, that's okay." A little surprised, I asked, "Oh, do I look honest?" "No," she answered. "You look 63." 6 WAITING ON A BED By John Kerr Sedentary Reporter Jan s mom was in the hospital last week in Columbus, Ohio. They life flighted her from Ashland, but had to wait for an empty bed. She was transferred from ICU to a regular room, but first they had to wait on a bed. Wayne Robl had surgery last week in Pittsburgh. We had a much longer wait than expected when he was transported from recovery to his regular room. They had to wait on a bed. I could not tell you the number of times I have walked through the halls of a hospital and seen plenty of empty beds while someone could not be admitted because there were no empty beds. To the outsider it appears that they are just playing some kind of game. I asked a person in authority once why they told people there weren t any empty beds, when there were in fact many empty beds. He said that it was not the actual beds, but the staff to care for the people who would occupy the beds. In many areas of life there are shortages of people to fill positions. Matthew 9: 35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. What work has God prepared in advance for you to do? (Eph.2:10) Romans 12:6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.
