2 From Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose Shalom BA Chaverim! As we move out of another inspirational High Holy Day season, and begin to consider the normalcy associated with our non-holiday existences, we can t help but reflect upon these past few months of our program year. As you may recall, Congregation B nai Amoona functions on a programmatic, as well as fiscal, year that stretches from July 1 June 30. Of course, this coincides with a new season of our wonderful Jewishly content-laden summer camps, Ramot Amoona and B nai Ami, helps the Klei Kodesh prepare for the spiritual and spirited Yamim Noraim, and allows our Educators to ready themselves to warmly greet new and returning students to our Lehrhaus our Adult Education Program, our Linda Rotskoff ECC, our Meyer Kranzberg Learning Center, and our impactful informal educational initiatives under the auspices of BAUSY. In addition, it permits our dedicated Lay Leaders an opportunity to vision not only for that which is imminent, but also with an eye to the near term and even the distant future. When you think about it, you realize there never really is a down or quiet time at our Shul. After all, our mission is to connect Jews (as well as those who are considering Judaism, those who are helping to raise Jewish families, or those who find depth and meaning in our heritage and way of life) and Judaism. This is a Herculean effort and one that requires maximum participation from our entire Kehillah, every single day of the year! Deepest personal gratitude to all those who toil in the Lord s Vineyard (one of Rabbi Lipnick s Z L, favorite names from our community!). May you each be blessed from On-High for your contributions. As a thoughtful and planful congregation, it should, therefore, come as no surprise that we have selected the theme of Atideynu 2.0: Imagining our Jewish Future as our focus for /5779. After all, a wise and successful Shul is one that is, as the Rabbis teach, Roeh Et Hanolad anticipates that which will soon be born. We cannot simply rest on our laurels and coast. That kind of complacency is a surefire recipe for obsolescence. We must continue, as we are in the midst of doing with our beautiful edifice, to imagine and dream about what our Synagogue can and should be as we begin to draw the 2nd decade of the 21 st century to a close. Surely, some modes and modalities will remain intact, as they are the hallmarks of our Shul. At the same time, however, we need not be fearful of exploring new ways of thinking and being. It is a delicate balance, yet one we are not only prepared for, it is one that, as Conservative Jews, is in our DNA; it is core to what we are and what we have always been. I hope every member of our Kehillah Kedoshah will join us in this vital exploration and investigation. that residential camps have on Jewish identity formation. Our visits also require mandatory stops in the nearby towns to secure junk food for the Kiddushes BA sponsors. By the way, I am told that our Shul not only has the best Kiddushes at our home base on Mason Road, we also host, by far, the best spreads at the camps we visit! This year, as Paulie and I prepared to visit Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, we happened to stop at the Public Library in the town of Eagle River. Much to our delight (ok, and surprise!), the library was humming with action. Adults, children and seniors were busily perusing the stacks, flipping through periodicals, and doing research on the library computers. Fortuitously, there was also a used book sale taking place during our visit. Amidst the treasures on the shelves, I located a volume that I had not read for many years by historian and social critic Dr. Morris Berman entitled The Reenchament of the World. In this dense and intellectually challenging work, Professor Berman asks readers to rethink the unhealthy and corrosive overreliance on empiricism, science and rationality. He argues for a holistic epistemology (the study of what distinguishes justified belief from simple opinion), which includes a return to a more sophisticated appreciation of the natural world and a diminishment of ego-conciseness as keys to human flourishing and the avoidance of planetary suicide. As we move forward in our program year at BA, with its focus on an in-depth consideration of Atideynu 2.0: Imagining Our Jewish Future, it would seem that Berman s conclusions should be at the forefront of our minds and weighed carefully. We would be wise in our quest for a meaningful and fulfilling future to include not only that which science and rationality can prove intellectually, but also those aspects that emerge from and thus speak to the heart, spirit and soul. If we are successful in our efforts, we will surely continue to serve as a spiritual home for those who search for an authentic Judaism that will stand the test of time, remain steadfast in rapidly shifting cultures, and be inured from vapid fading fads. In fact, we will fulfill our mission in spades by living out the words of the beautiful Piyyut, liturgical poem, chanted on the High Holy Days during the Musaf by our wonderful Chazzan and her talented Zamarim: Veyishmeu Rechokeem Veyavou, Veyitnu Lecha Keter Meluchah And even the distant and disenfranchised shall hear of your successes and they shall be drawn near. And they will adorn God with the Crown of Monarchy! Vechen Yehi Ratzon And may this be the Almighty s blessing to us in this New Year. Amen! With love and optimism as we consider Atideynu, Our Future, In thinking about Atideynu, our future, I was reminded of an experience from this past summer. As most of you know, each summer we do our utmost to visit the Judaically and Hebraically contentful summer camps in our region. It is always a pleasure to do so, and each visit reminds us of the unparalleled positivity Carnie Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose The Rabbi Bernard Lipnick Senior Rabbinic Chair x105 RavRoseBA@bnaiamoona.com Congregation B nai Amoona Bulletin 2

3 Cantorial Notes Return again, return again. Return to the land of your soul. Return to who you are. Return to what you are. Return to where you are born and reborn again. Return again, return again. Return to the land of your soul. You may recognize these words of the song by Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach that we often sing on Yom Kippur here at B nai Amoona. We sing of return, of T shuvah: turning ourselves toward what is real and important in our lives. As Jews, our foundation for what is real and important is our Torah. And one of the ways in which we can be most intimately intertwined with Torah is through actually learning to chant straight from our Holy Scroll. Here at B nai Amoona we are blessed with people of all ages who participate in the Torah reading, and blessed with encouraging mentors, such as Ed and Rita Balk who, through their TNT (Torah Nusach Tefillah) Fund, sponsor an incentive program for our teen Torah readers called the Yad Squad, through which our teen Torah readers can earn money and prizes. Whether our Yad Squad members put the funds toward school, camp experiences, Tzedakah, or simple fun, we are committed to the program as a way to cultivate committed Torah readers and Service leaders and to let our young people know they are valued and wanted in the ritual life of our congregation. With the school year in full swing, remember to keep up with Torah reading and leading services. The cycle for earning Yad Squad membership runs from Shavuot to Shavuot. This cycle was chosen since Shavuot is the celebration of the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. Shavuot has another name, Z man Matan Torateinu, which means the Time of the Giving of our Torah an appropriate time to celebrate our Torah readers. This Shavuot is on June 8-9, 2019, so take a look at your calendar now, and be in touch with Klei Kodesh Assistant Laurie Cohen at Laurie@ bnaiamoona.com for more information and to sign up for readings. To earn membership, a student chants Torah a minimum of five times during the course of the year, though up to two of the five participation times can be as a service leader. Please keep track of your readings to help us be sure that no one gets missed for Yad Squad membership. Empowering our young people is important for instilling a sense of community and we are grateful to the wonderful adult role models who participate in services on a regular basis. So this year we will be establishing a brand new, unique Yad Squad program, also supported by the TNT Fund, just for our adults! Some of our adult Torah readers have been reading Torah since their Bar or Bat Mitzvah at age 13. Some learned to chant Torah as adults for their children s B nai Mitzvah or for their own adult Bar or Bat Mitzvah, and others have learned or relearned Torah cantillation as adults because they wanted to possess another key with which to unlock the mysteries of Torah and Jewish ritual. I encourage anyone interested to unlock those mysteries for themselves. And I will be teaching an Introduction to Torah Cantillation class this fall to help anyone on their way. Together we can ensure that our future, Atideynu, is filled with song, Torah and community. Thank you to our dedicated Torah readers of all ages, and much success to all who are on the path of learning and of turning to Torah. Sharon Hazzan Sharon Nathanson x104 sharon.nathanson@bnaiamoona.com CALLING ALL YOUNG PROFESSIONALS! 4 From Rabbi Krublit Greetings friends, Shalom Chaverim, The High Holy Days are thus named because they are separate from the rest of the year. As we enter autumn and our world begins to wane, Judaism connects us to those natural rhythms and forces us to consider two undeniable truths. One, at some point you will experience an ultimate waning. And two, we still have the power to change before our deaths. Clarity and dread are not mutually exclusive emotions, and during the Days of Awe the unity of these two ways of experiencing our pasts and our futures can lead to earth shifting changes. This combination can shake us to our core as our perspectives are simultaneously narrowed and broadened with possibilities. The wind wisps through wilted leaves and dead branches to whisper to us that metamorphosis is coming. To the degree that you can, control and use this powerful realization to make for enduring transformations during the Days of Awe. This is not the time for weak promises. Your life ebbs and flows on the strength of the tide, not on small course shifts caused by debris. Don t squander the enormous opportunity when faced with a telescopic view of your impact on the world. Look, instead, where you can love more deeply, heal more quickly, and grow more expansively. This is a time for setting deep roots that can last year round, whether you are faced with the bitter cold of winter or the blistering heat of summer. Transient utterances and words will rob you of the strength of this moment. When you feel afraid that your life is small and miniscule in relation to the enormity of the universe don t shut out that fear. Embrace it. It can threaten to overwhelm and destroy, a river turning to a dangerous flood. But when anxiety speaks to you it comes from part of you that recognizes you could be better. Hours spent in synagogue will not alone be enough to change if you don t let that anxiety motivate you past mumbled prayers towards real action, towards change. If you think you don t have anything in your life to change, or that you re too old or too busy to grow, you re wrong. That s the defense of the person who is too fearful to do honest introspection. The Ten Days of Repentance are not a time for patting yourself on the back for all the good you did, they re for recognizing the very real and dangerous forces coming your way as you scramble for an escape from the inevitable. In light of this, know that you are an integral part of the overlapping mosaics of holiness called our modern world. This means you always have an obligation to make the world a better place. The best way to begin to accomplish this task is unified together with your community during these Holy Days. Come together, to pray and to meditate on the transformations that you as an individual, and you as a member of the community need to do in order to make God s dream a reality. God is Avinu Malkeinu, our parent and our sovereign, but our parent comes first. The dreams of God are heard in those quiet moments which happen on the Days of Awe, that fill us with wonder. They are the dreams of a Parent for a more unified and whole world for Their child. A world where Their child, you, are less angry at their loved ones, less sad when confronted with the state of humanity. A dream filled where kindness and generosity comes as naturally to you as breathing. This is a big dream, but it can be made true once you embrace and take serious the dual revelations of the autumnal High Holy Days. At some point you will wane until you are no more, but until then you can begin to change yourself and the world for the better. There s no time to start like the present. The present is a gift, and now is the time to unwrap it. As we focus on time, imagine all the possibilities that your future has awaiting you. And, join us in turning our communal attention to imagining our future as our community focuses on our theme for the year: Atideynu 2.0, Imagining Our Jewish Future. What will the present bring you, and how can you use that gift to make the world better? How will your future be changed by such decisions? When thinking about these answers, think not only on major structural changes, such as physical health and wealth, but dedicate effort to the significant question of your spiritual well being. 8 Social Action News Interested in Being a Mensch? We Need Help Doing Good Deeds for Others The Social Action Committee is looking for new members. We need help for continuing our many programs, such as Operation Isaiah, our annual collection and sorting of items for the Jewish Food Pantry. Also, we are hoping to launch new programs, such as a recycling program for the synagogue. Watch the Shabbat Sheets, Enouncements, and bulletins for our activities. Contact Laura Goldmeier or GoldDJLR@aol.com if you would like to volunteer. And always feel free to join us for a meeting! See the bulletin board in the lobby during the Social Action month of Cheshvan from Oct Nov. 8 for some of our activities. Employment Connection Drive The Employment Connection helps individuals needing jobs by providing proper clothing for interviews in addition to helping with resume writing and preparation for the interview. Once again, this year, we are sponsoring the collection of men s and women s clothing (on hangers), shoes, men s dress shirts, ties, handbags and all accessories. Please bring your donated items to benefit the Employment Connection to Shul and hang them on the rack in the Tober Lobby. There will be tax donation forms for you to fill out. The drive will run from September 21 thru October 1. For further information, please contact Rosalie Franklin at Operation Isaiah These High Holy Days, please give the gift of making sure there is food on someone else s table. The KOL NIDREI ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE to benefit the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry is coming. Personal care items, cleaning and pet supplies and paper items are not eligible for food stamps and are as important as many food items. Please plan to fill your bags to overflowing and bring them on Kol Nidrei and help us fill the Bimah. The Men s Club will be handing out bags generously donated by Trader Joe s on Rosh Hashanah for you to take home and fill. On the bags will be stapled a wish list of preferred items for the pantry. Please be generous and use extra bags if you can. Please remember NO EXPIRED, OPENED or USED ITEMS as we just have to pitch these and NO GLASS JARS as they require extra fragile packing and handling. Many thanks in advance to the USYers who will be collecting bags at the South side circle drive entrance and the North side valet parking entrance for those who wish to drop off rather than park and carry them so you can bring multiple bags full of groceries to benefit those who really need your help. Lastly, we will spend the afternoon and evening after Yom Kippur (Sept. 20) sorting and packing all of that food to speed the donation to the food pantry. We will be working from 1:00 pm to about 8:00 pm in the Guller Banquet Hall expansion area behind the Sanctuary. If you have any time during that day, please come help us. Our sorting reduces the length of time to get food into the hands of their clients from 3 weeks down to 2 days! 9 On the Development Side As we prepare for the High Holy Days, I want to remind everyone of opportunities to not only make your personal observances warm and tasty, but also benefit our Shul. I m talking about our on-going Scrip Program. For those of us who shop at Dierberg s and Schnucks, I encourage you to purchase scrip from Jeanne Gaska in the administrative office or go to We have denominations of $100 and $25 for the two grocery stores plus we also have $10 increments for Panera and Starbucks on hand. You can also purchase gift cards for many retailers, restaurants, and even Amazon. To see our full list of available vendors, go to or call Jeanne and she will send you the form. This is a great time to start thinking ahead to Chanukah as we light the first Chanukah candle the evening of December 2. So, how does this help B nai Amoona, you may ask? Each of these vendors remits a percentage of the scrip/gift cards back to us! If everyone were to participate, just imagine the dollars that would come in to help our Shul. Participating on a regular basis allows you to have pride in the well-being of our Shul. Remember the phrase little things mean a lot, that s what buying scrip and gift cards means to B nai Amoona. Thanking you in advance and wishing you a L Shanah Tovah Tikatavu, Beth Beth Saltzman Vice President, Development bpsaltzman50@yahoo.com As the New Year approaches, and our theme changes, let's continue to "be Mensches" and shop with Amazon. By using just one little word, "Smile", Amazon will donate 0.5% of our eligible purchases to our very own B'nai Amoona. Simply sign in to AmazonSmile instead of Amazon, choose Congregation Bnai Amoona (note no apostrophe) as your charity of choice and once you do that, your shopping experience remains the same and B'nai Amoona reaps the benefit. 10 Shomrei Amoonim Please let us know if you, a family member or a congregant goes into a hospital, rehab facility, skilled nursing facility, etc. We would love to reach out to them, but due to HIPAA laws we can only do so if we know where they are. Please contact Amy Maupin, Klei Kodesh Assistant at x131 or amy@bnaiamoona.com or call Sheryl Kalman at or Shomrei.amoonim@gmail.com. What is Shomrei Amoonim? We are a small village of Congregants who reach out to other Congregants to let them know we care. Our biggest program has been to reach out to approximately 60 elder, wiser Congregants with holiday care packages. This has been a chance to share memories and stories between generations. As a congregation, we are transitioning into a year where we will focus on Atideynu, our future. Here is a reflection from one of our volunteer families on what volunteering has meant to them: Our family appreciates the opportunity to participate in the Shomrei Amoonim program. For about 4-5 years, we ve delivered small presents around the Jewish holidays to B nai Amoona community members who reside at the Brookdale retirement community. The gifts are lovingly prepared by the wonderful Shomrei Amoonim team spearheaded by Sheryl Kalman. Our children Daniel (10th grade), Ariela (8th grade) and Francesca (4th grade) enjoy sharing the holiday spirit with the residents, whom we ve gotten to know over the years. The anticipation when we ring the doorbell to surprise someone with a holiday gift from B nai Amoona is one of the most enjoyable parts. I enjoy meeting the residents and learning about their connection to B nai Amoona, said Francesca. I like to hear stories about our friends pasts and the common Jewish heritage we share across generations. I find it very enjoyable when we get invited inside for a conversation and learn about our friends hobbies and interests. For example, Mr. Jack Finkelstein showed us his musical instruments and Mr. Bob Groer told us about the classes he takes at Washington University and showed us his pool table, said Ariela. It feels satisfying to know we can do something that makes others feel good, even though it is a small gesture, said Daniel. "With grandparents thousands of miles away, we are glad that our children get the opportunity to develop meaningful connections across generations." Mihaela & Matthew Grad If you, or your family would like to join our ranks please contact me! A little known secret is that Shomrei Amoonim keeps a small supply of soup, Challah, and meals to use in times of grief or significant illness. Thank you to Jon Hoffman, Dotty Ellis and Regina Herzog for keeping our freezer stocked. If you know someone who is in need of a meal, or would like to help feed a soul please contact me! 11 Member Spotlight Introducing DEBRA SPIGEL Debra has been at B nai Amoona since the 1st grade, when she attended Shabbat services, Sunday School and later, Hebrew school. Debra was one of the last congregants to have her Bat Mitzvah with Rabbi Halpern; Rabbi Lipnick was just beginning his tenure at the synagogue. Debra met Joel, her husband of 49 years, at Washington University Hillel. Both were students; Joel at WU and Debra at University of Missouri St. Louis. If UMSL had a Hillel Debra and Joel may never have met. Their 3 children; Chad, Pamela and Sarah all grew up at B nai Amoona. Debra taught Sunday School at BA, preschool at the JCC and 1st grade at Epstein Hebrew Academy as well as in the Ft. Zumwalt district. As her parents aged and needed more care, Debra retired but continued substitute teaching whenever she could find time. This is a challenging year for Debra as both of her parents passed away. She finds comfort saying Kaddish times per week and when unable to get to Shul she recites a prayer given to her by Rabbi Davidson. Debra has formed a special bond with other congregants also navigating the process of loss. We ve formed a brotherhood and sisterhood. Debra is quick to describe what she likes most about B nai Amoona. BA is there for you in the good times and the tough times. The rabbi is easy to talk to and Sharon is very warm. Debra is an active member; she volunteered in the gift shop and helped with the Shabbat bulletin and now co-chairs the Minyanaires. A good laugh is always a welcome gift and occurs frequently in the company of one of her sisters and an aunt. She is able to relax, be herself and the laughter comes naturally. Debra is passionate about her family and has committed herself to creating Shalom Bayit, domestic harmony. Debra makes it a point not to judge, to be an independent thinker and to keep learning. Debra proves it s never too late to aim for the sky and dive into life. Literally! Last month she went skydiving with her 18-year old granddaughter and loved the experience. However, Debra is not a 24/7 thrill seeker. When asked about what makes a perfect day she describes joy in staying home, playing games and watching TV. Introducing CALEB PULTMAN Caleb is a remarkable 19-year old whose family has deep roots at B nai Amoona. A graduate of BA's preschool, Hebrew school, Sunday school and summer camps, Caleb also served as USY President from Caleb just completed his freshman year at American University in Washington DC where he is pursuing an interdisciplinary major in the School of Public Affairs incorporating communications, legal institutions, economics and government. During the school year, in addition to classwork, Caleb maintains a lobbying internship at a boutique firm. Yes, we are describing a young man just barely old enough to vote. And no, school + internships are not enough to satisfy his appetite for politics. Caleb also spends significant time researching the 2018 midterm congressional races and legislation while observing hearings on Capitol Hill. Sporting a suit and tie, Caleb commuted to DC for his Hillternship and describes loving his work with the lobbying firm s clients. Ironically, Caleb s dream job is not on The Hill in DC but rather with a different type of court, in Madison Square Garden, as the starting point guard for the NY Knicks. What surprises people most is how much Caleb knows about the game of basketball including its history, player stats and culture. Caleb is the first to admit that he is much better talking about the game than actually playing it. Caleb s perfect day includes neither basketball nor politics but starts with sleeping late, waking up in a city on the Mediterranean, eating a big breakfast while reading a great book. A walk around town, a seat in a café to eat and people watch, and closing out this day of perfection is time spent with family and friends enjoying good music. Caleb is passionate about his family first and foremost; his community is a close second. Caleb defines his community as wherever he is at the moment. This summer that meant B nai Amoona s camp Ramot Amoona where he was Rosh Teva (spearheading the nature program). If forced to pick one word to describe himself Caleb says curious. Stand Up Comedy and SNL keep Caleb laughing. When asked what he cherishes most about BA, Caleb is quick with his response! The ability to balance tradition with exploration. B nai Amoona provides the tools that people need to understand Judaism. 11 Congregation B nai Amoona Bulletin

12 Member Spotlight Introducing ROZ GLASER Roz (formerly Roz Kaskowitz) has been a B nai Amoona member since she was 10 years old. Not the first but the second Bat Mitzvah ever to be celebrated at BA! Roz and her husband Leonard are currently enjoying their 57th year of marriage, and have 3 grown children; Amy, Mark and Lisa in addition to 4 grandchildren. The Social Action Committee is where Roz shared her gifts of caring and friendliness; her impact lives on in many hearts today. Roz chaired the Carver House Christmas gift collection and donation program for 10 years, shopping for others right after the Christmas holiday and storing the boxes in her basement. Welcoming BA members home with a congregation mug filled with silk flowers, Roz helped ease the difficult move to a nursing home. And for many years, Leonard and Roz were the B nai Amoona gardening committee, a committee of 2, maintaining the beautiful synagogue garden. They retired and passed on the shovel to the next generation. Oasis and The Butterfly House join the list of local organizations fortunate to receive Roz and Leonard s time, in addition to tutoring children at Green Trails, their children s elementary school. Volunteering plays a significant role in Roz s life, yet she also worked professionally in education. She was a preschool teacher at our synagogue and earned her Associates degree in Early Childhood Education, working many years for the Parkway School District as a teacher s assistant. Later, Roz cared for her mother as she lived with Alzheimer s Disease and answered helpline calls as a volunteer for the Alzheimer s Association for 10 years. Adding to the list of organizations who receive Roz s commitment and care is The Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, where she currently supports individuals who, like Roz and some of her family members, live with the effects of this illness. Fellow BA members might be surprised to learn that Roz collects and displays small ornamental boxes throughout her home, representing her travels. Each box contains a slip of paper describing where and when the box was acquired. Besides having a passion for enriching others lives, when asked, What are you most passionate about? Roz pauses to consider and responds, People being open and kind, sharing all that St. Louis has to offer with others and The Botanical Gardens. A perfect day for Roz means being outdoors soaking up the joy of spending time amongst friends and family. welcome NEW MEMBERS We welcome our newest members who have joined B'nai Amoona since Rosh Hashanah 5778! 13 The Meyer Kranzberg Learning Center I am not baker. It s a fact. I love to cook but baking; I am definitely not as skilled. People often ask why I don t bake. The answer is simple. I m not very good at following exact directions. I like to improvise; add a little; subtract a little; try out a new ingredient. I often taste a little along the way and add a pinch or a handful more or less of something. I often get an idea in my head and try mixing ingredients to see if I can make what I am imagining. I think about all the many ways to alter or change the recipe for the next meal. This is possible when cooking.but baking is much more of a science. This year at B nai Amoona our theme is Atideynu 2.0: Imagining Our Jewish Future. The physical changes occurring at B nai Amoona are easily noticed. The construction crew is working diligently to help prepare our building for the future. It will be more accessible, more user friendly. The vision that helped create this new structure is one that is rooted in what will be; instead of what already is. Visioning what will be can be both daunting and exciting. To vision, you must embrace hope. You must allow yourself to be challenged. You must believe there is more to be done. You must spend time gathering all your ingredients; all that exists around you and begin to envision what s next. One of the most important aspects of Atideynu isn t the idea of "the" future; but rather understanding our. This isn t someone else s future we are speaking and learning about. We aren t trying to plan for someone else. We aren t looking forward to see what is right for others. It is about what will be; can be; for US. It is what WE can do together. Working together. Visioning together. Important Dates to Know! Sunday, September 23 - Opening Day of MKLC for our PreK- 6th Grade Students The B nai Amoona Kehillah already has all right ingredients. Together, we will begin this year visioning, thinking about, and looking towards our future. We will try new things. We will embrace change. We will find ourselves sometimes outside of our comfort zone. And yet we will dream; we will imagine, we will look toward what can be! We will do this in many areas of our programming. And we will do this together. The Meyer Kranzberg Learning Center will also be going through a process this year of visioning and looking toward the future. We too will try new things, ask big questions, and begin creating what can be! We will take the best practices in education and Jewish learning and vision what they could look like here, at our school. We will add our own incredible ingredients; amazing faculty and engaged families, and create new pathways to learning. We will incorporate the arts, music, drama, dance, cooking, writing into all of our learning. AND we will involve all of you in this process. In the Torah we are taught that G-d gave us all the ingredients we need; but G-d alone did not make Challah. G-d alone did not give us bread. We at B nai Amoona have already been given many ingredients. However, I am excited to being experimenting, engaging, questioning, and visioning with all of YOU!! We must continually add new ingredients, ideas, and inspiration as we look onward and create our own nourishment. Our own Challah. Our own sustenance that will bring us into Our Future. Atideynu. 14 Linda Rotskoff Early Childhood Center As our amazing ECC staff spends time imagining our future for the New Year, so does BA, with this year's theme being Atideynu 2.0: Imagining Our Jewish Future. Each year, we delve into developing our skills as teachers and planning for the future. Congregation B nai Amoona, is also imagining our future. Physically, we are doing this with our huge remodel project but spiritually we are doing this through programs that center around our families. I m hoping everyone attends the Young Family Rosh Hashanah Service this year. Rabbi Orrin will be leading along with Samantha Thal and Brandi Roach who will bring beautiful music to the room. Prior to the Service, we invite everyone to make a connection at the Open House. Members of the Young Families Membership Committee will be on hand ready to wish you Chag Sameach (Happy Holiday) and share information about BA and programmatic opportunities for young families at BA. Following our Blessing of our Young Children on the Bimah in the Main Sanctuary, we invite everyone to our Playground Nosh. Our Play and Nosh will be located on the ECC Playground. I Tishrei What an amazing season! A new start is always so exciting. At school, we celebrate the Days of Awe beginning with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, leading up to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. We think about those whom we have wronged and ask for forgiveness. We go to the lake or create our lake at school and participate in Teshuvah (repentance). Following Yom Kippur, we get ready to sit eat and maybe even sleep in our Sukkahs (booths) to celebrate the wonderful holiday of Sukkot. Then, of course we dance with then Torah to celebrate as we finish reading the Torah on Simchat Torah! College Connect Do you ever wonder if your college student will continue to embrace the religious traditions they experienced at home? At B nai Amoona, we have a program called College Connect designed to support college students and keep them connected with their home synagogue, even if they are miles away. Our College Connect chairperson, Rebbetzin Paulie Rose, and I will be sending out small gifts throughout the year to remind our students that B nai Amoona is thinking of them and wishing them well. As a college alum, I remember the many High Holy Day, Chanukah, Purim and end of the year surprises I received. The College Connect program is funded by the Rabbi Lipnick Foundation for Conservative Judaism. With this generous funding, we are able to engage college students with love, and help them continue to feel connected to their faith, even though they may be far away. We are so looking forward to sending each one of these packages with the love of Judaism we share and to seeing their reactions! If you have a college student and would like them to receive these wonderful packages,, please contact me (sarah@bnaiamoona.com) with your students name and address. A Note from Sarah... Why do I do what I do, you may ask? Youth groups provide our youth and teens with the opportunity to create life-long friendships outside of school. Our events are a mixture of fun, educational and meaningful experiences! As a teen at B nai Amoona, I made new friends, stayed connected with old friends and grew as an individual and as a Jewish woman. I would love to talk with you about the importance of our youth programming. Come join the bunch! Shanah Tovah Umetukah! May this year be blessed with Chesed, Ruach, Sameach and Shalom for all. Sisterhood s Fall Class: ATIDEYNU 201: Conversations in Search of a Meaningful Judaism As we begin the reconstruction of our Synagogue s physical plant, we also need to explore a series of conversations about the blueprint for our communities' future social, emotional and spiritual aspirations. We will start by listening to the voices of younger Jews, from a variety of Jewish communities, who will talk and reflect about things to come. These voices are found in a collection of essays edited by Rabbi Sidney Schwartz in the book entitled Jewish Megatrends. As our conversations move along we will, no doubt, invite various Rabbis, teachers, artists and writers to join our explorations. The topics for discussion will be posted online and in our Bulletin. People are free to join us for a particular subject matter, or they can enjoy dialoguing with us throughout the entire series. We would love to have you join us! 18 GET YOUR PIN BEFORE THE HIGH HOLY DAYS AND WEAR IT TO SHUL! Our Torah Fund theme this year focuses on Atid meaning future. We are so excited about this theme because, coincidentally, it ties right into our B nai Amoona theme for this coming year which is Atideynu 2.0: Imagining our Jewish Future. The entire Congregation will be thinking about how we envision our future as Jews here at Shul and individually as well! How do you envision your personal future; the future of your family; community; the United States, Canada, and Israel? When you dream of a bright future, is it in the next world or this one? The seminaries of the Conservative/Masorti Movement, which we support through Torah Fund, are doing the great work which helps us navigate our future together, as one people. And our Sisterhoods provide the social and educational networks the extended family, which help us go forward in our future as Jewish women, with confidence. The 5779 Torah Fund pin envelopes the Hebrew word for future (Atid) with a stylized Magen David. It represents our wish for a distinctly Jewish future, for ourselves as individuals, our families, and our communities. Our Sisterhood joins Sisterhoods across North America to support, strengthen, and sustain Conservative/ Masorti Judaism throughout the world.
