2 Dear Friends, Shalom! Welcome to the High Holy Day Season at! The Yamim Noraim (High Holy Days) begin with our meaningful Selichot Service on Saturday night September 16, and culminate with our joyous celebration of Simchat Torah on Thursday evening, October 12 and Friday morning, October 13. Our Klei Kodesh, staff, and lay leaders have been busy preparing and planning services and activities for everyone to enjoy. We look forward to seeing you and encourage your active participation. This bulletin is an overview of what will be taking place at Shul during this busy time of the year. Please take a few moments to review the contents. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Executive Director, Andrew Schwebel, on his direct line, The High Holy Days provide us an annual opportunity to start anew. In previous years, as a Congregational Family, we have opened our hearts, expanded our tents, and Jewbilated. This year, our theme of Zay a Mensch Be a Mensch! will provide us an opportunity to quest for our highest and noblest selves. Many of us are familiar with this well-known expression, but what does Be a Mensch! really mean? This year Rabbi Rose, along with our Klei Kodesh team and educators, will lead us on an exciting intellectual and spiritual journey as we strive to make this New Year particularly meaningful. I hope you will take this opportunity to participate in our programming, which will surely enhance our interpersonal relationships, and enable each of us to grow in our humanity. I truly feel blessed to share these holy and sacred days with all of you and look forward to personally wishing you a Shanah Tovah. 7 In preparation for our Schmooze with our Rabbis Yom Kippur afternoon discussion, Rabbi Rose requests the Congregational Family read Climbing Jacob s Ladder: One Man s Journey to Rediscover a Jewish Spiritual Tradition by Dr. Alan Morinis Jewish by birth, though from a secular family, Alan Morinis explored Hinduism and Buddhism as a young man. But in 1997, in the face of personal crisis, he turned to his Jewish heritage for guidance. In his reading he happened upon a Jewish spiritual tradition called Mussar. Gradually he realized that he had stumbled upon an insightful discipline for self-development, complete with meditative, contemplative, and other well-developed transformative practices designed to penetrate the deepest roots of the inner life. Eventually reaching the limits of what he could learn on his own, he decided to seek out a Mussar teacher. This was not an easy task, since almost the entire world of the Mussar tradition had been wiped out in the Holocaust. In time, he found an accomplished master who stood in an unbroken line of transmission of the Mussar tradition, and who lived in the center of a community of Orthodox Jews on Long Island. This book tells the story of Morinis journey to meet his teacher and what he learned from him, revealing the central teachings and practices that are the spiritual treasury and legacy of Mussar. 8 Tashlich Service Rosh Hashanah I Thursday, September 21, :00 pm - South Parking Lot Please meet the Klei Kodesh in the South Lot for our annual Tashlich Service as we walk together to the Broadview Farm Lake at Mason and Conway, where we will symbolically cast off our sins. We will then enjoy some delicious Rosh Hashanah refreshments just before Minchah & Ma ariv Services, as we usher in the second day of the New Year. The Tashlich Service is based on a phrase from the Prophetic Book of Micah (7:19): You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. As the author Francine Klagsburn suggests in her book Jewish Days, Tashlich is a unique ritual. The flowing waters signify washing away those sins. But on a deeper level, the waters represent the essence of the miracle of Creation celebrated on Rosh Hashanah. From out of the waters that filled the cosmos, God separated light from dark and heaven from earth, Scripture tells us. Later, the waters came together again to flood the land and destroy its inhabitants except for Noah and those he saved. When those waters receded, the world seemed to be created anew, with a promise from God that never again would it be destroyed. The waters of Rosh Hashanah symbolize the Creation of the world and its new beginning, a creation and beginning that are commemorated and re-enacted each year. Tashlich is an especially poignant ritual for children. Please make every effort to bring them with you so they can experience the profundity of this meaningful ritual. 9 UROSH Rosh Hashanah II Alternative Programming Friday, September 22, :00-9:45 am Special Torah for Today Session with Rabbinic Intern Benjamin Chaidell The Akedah Through the Ages: How Jews over Time have Responded to the Near Sacrifice of Isaac In this session, we will first understand the Akedah (the near sacrifice of Isaac) in its biblical context, and then examine how Jewish commentators over the ages have responded to this disturbing passage, from Rabbinic models of piety to the martyrs of the Crusades to the modern state of Israel. We will also consider how our forebears have related to sacrifice as an element of Menschlichkeit - of fulfilling our duties to God and to one another. When does sacrifice go too far? 10:00-11:30 am Break-Out Sessions Ethical Path to the Hereafter with Rabbi Shulamit Cenker Rabbi Shulamit Cenker discusses end of life issues and ethical dilemmas that arise during this often challenging time. Placing a focus on living wills, Rabbi Cenker will talk about the ethics of bridging the end of life to the afterlife. Rabbi Cenker will also discuss the rituals of Judaism that emphasize the Mitzvah of Kavod HaMet, honoring the dead, with an emphasis on Chevre Kedishah and Taharah. Israel: Compassion, Challenges, and Conversation with Rabbi Orrin Krublit Rabbi Orrin Krublit asks the question, How can we have ethical, loving, and challenging conversations about Israel in today s modern world? Through examining a balanced perspective of today s political situation in Israel, this class will explore why loving and critiquing the State of Israel is a Mitzvah in today s complicated world. How can we have a Menschlich attitude with those whom we have disagreements when it comes to the future of the State of Israel? Come and find out! Rosh U Cafe Pull up a chair, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, and have a one-on-one conversation with someone new about a variety of ethical topics and the Jewish views on those topics. This is meant to be a place where you can Schmooze with a purpose! Hear what others have to say about ethical decisions in our modern life, share your own opinions, and explore Jewish sources on the topics. Political Institutions and Ethical Society with Matthew Grad Can even well-designed political institutions ensure an ethical society in an era of declining individual morality and ethics? What is the connection between the overall level of common ethics and morality in a society and the society s ability to sustain modern, democratic political norms? Does an erosion on the individual level lead to an eventual degradation of political and societal institutions? Are we seeing such an erosion today, and if so, what does that portend for the long-term viability of our society? 15 Neilah Services A Moment of Intimacy with the Divine Yom Kippur Neilah Ark Ceremony A Unique Opportunity NOT TO BE MISSED Saturday, September 30, 4:30 pm Torah is a gift from God to the People of Israel. In Synagogue Sanctuaries, the place we keep this powerful gift is the Aron HaKodesh, the Holy Ark. While Judaism does not distinguish one place as being more holy or closer to God than any other, there is a communal sense that the Aron HaKodesh represents a spiritual space and an opportunity for drawing nearer to the Almighty. This year, once again, we invite our Congregational Family to participate in a special opportunity for personal prayer before the Aronei HaKodesh (Holy Arks) on either the lower or upper Bimah. During the Neilah service of Yom Kippur at approximately 4:45 pm, you are invited as individuals, or as families, to come onto the Bimah and stand for a brief moment before the open Ark in personal, silent prayer. Because of the wonderful, enthusiastic and overwhelming response to this opportunity in past years, we kindly request that you be considerate of others in the length of time you stand before the Ark so we have time for all who wish to participate. 18 Bride and Groom of the Torah Betty & Paul Mendelson Betty and Paul Mendelson were married in 1953 by Rabbi Halpern at B nai Amoona. They have 3 daughters Susan (Dr. Leland) Laycob, Vicki (Michael) Barnell, and Nina (Dr. David) Greenfield, along with 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Paul grew up at B nai Amoona and attended Hebrew School at our Shul. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis. He was owner and President of American Looseleaf Company. Paul has been an avid supporter or sat on the board of several local organizations including Camp Hawthorne, Paraquad, Central Institute for the Deaf, the JCC, the Holocaust Museum, and the Starkloff Disability Institute. Betty attended the University of Missouri and was a founding member of the Mid-America Chapter of the Crohn s & Colitis Foundation. Betty and Paul were instrumental in the development of a tennis program which was started 12 years ago and is still ongoing at the Central Institute for the Deaf. Betty and Paul have established 2 funds at B nai Amoona The Betty & Paul Mendelson Family Library Fund and The Betty & Paul Mendelson Family Food for the Needy Fund. 19 Ticket Policies & Procedures The Board of Trustees of would like to familiarize our Congregational Family with these guidelines so everyone is well informed. We would like to facilitate a smooth and positive experience during this High Holy Day Season. Please pay special attention to parking areas and designated entrances due to the High Holy Day crowds. As always, your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Thank you! Family members in good standing will receive two tickets, per Service, for admission. Individual members in good standing will receive one ticket, per Service, for admission. In order to receive tickets, all past due commitments must be paid or a payment plan must be made with our Executive Director, Andy Schwebel. You may contact Andy at x106 or andy@bnaiamoona.com. Pick up your tickets in the Shul office on Wednesday, September 6 and Thursday, September 7, from 8:30 am - 6:30 pm. Remaining tickets will be mailed on Friday, September 8. People under the age of 21 do not require tickets. Full time college students and members of the military need only show ID cards. Please note that these procedures have been established for the safety, security and convenience of all who join us for the High Holy Day Season. Please cooperate with parking attendants at all times. Please consider carpooling to reduce the amount of traffic. The North Lot is for accessible parking only. Please follow the directions of the traffic officer who will be there to assist you. The South Lot is for entry, but turns into exit only at the conclusion of Services. Conway Road driveway is for exit only. On Kol Nidrei and Yom Kippur, additional parking & shuttle service will be available at the Whitfield School. No Parking Areas Please DO NOT park in the Accessible Parking Area unless you have an appropriate permit. If you don t have a permit but have a handicapped person in your car, please drop that person off at the Circle Drive on the South side of the building. Please DO NOT park on the baseball fields. Please DO NOT block the fire lanes. There is absolutely no parking at yellow curbs. These areas are for emergency vehicles only. 24 j Celebrate Sukkot with your own Lulav & Etrog For centuries, blessing the Lulav and Etrog has been the Jewish way of thanking God for the blessings of the earth on the Holy Day of Sukkot. By holding the four species together, we symbolically get our own act together for the New Year. By pointing them in six directions, we remind ourselves that God s presence can be found in every aspect of our lives. And by shaking the Lulav and Etrog vigorously, we commit to being movers and shakers in the world, for good and for blessing. First take the branch of a Lulav (palm). On the right side, attach 3 Hadasim (Myrtle branches). On the left, place 2 Aravot (willows). Now hold them together with a bright yellow Etrog and give them a good shake.
