4 Announcements Shabbat Chai Returns For An 8th Season! Our family-friendly format continues! Lively singing, fabulous musicians, and a warm welcome for Shabbat all in one hour and dinner if you wish. Everyone is welcome! The first service will be on November 3rd. Other dates: December 1, February 2, March 2, & May 4 Pre-neg with snacks is available at 5:45 PM. The one hour service begins at 6:00 PM. Dinner if you wish; be our guest! Donations are encouraged. Young children will love the service and music! The activity room will also be open during service and dinner. Friday Evening Chapel Service Traditional Kabbalat Shabbat Services are held every Friday night at 5:45 p.m. in the Fishbein Chapel, including Fridays when Shabbat Chai is scheduled. Spirited Poetry Spectacular at Central Congregational Church 296 Angell Street, Providence On Sunday, October 22 at 11:45 a.m., our neighbors and good friends at Central Congregational Church are hosting The Spirited Poetry Spectacular, featuring Rhode Island s State Poet Laureate, Tina Cane. Come to meet Tina Cane and support our friends at Central Congregation Church, as they compose/recite poems about anything and everything in God s creation! Aspiring poets are invited to share their compositions, too. The event will be held in Chapel Hall at Central Congregational Church and all are welcome.

7 ADULT INSTITUTE LECTURE SERIES OCTOBER 26 7:30-9:30 PM TEMPLE EMANU-EL VESTRY 99 TAFT AVENUE PROVIDENCE, RI PENNIES FOR HEAVEN: A BRIEF BUT FASCINATING LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN SYNAGOGUES AND MONEY RABBI DAN JUDSON In this lecture, we will delve into the history of American synagogues through an unlikely source: money. We will also examine a few fascinating and contentious moments in American Jewish history the creation of the first Reform synagogue, the introduction of dues, the rise and fall of for-profit synagogues to see how disputes over money reflected the changing values of a Jewish community seeking its place in American society. Our tour of the past will also lend some insight into the future of synagogues at this moment of uncertainty as to their long term viability. Rabbi Dan Judson, Ph.D. is the Associate Dean of the Hebrew College Rabbinical School. His book Pennies for Heaven: The History of American Synagogues and Money, will be published this winter [Brandeis University Press]. He consults to synagogues across the country on new financial and engagement models and his research on synagogues that have eliminated dues has been featured in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Haaretz, The New York Jewish Week and Reform Judaism magazine. 14 Soulful Shabbat Shabbaton November 18 The Feminine Face of God Teachers-in residence Rabbi Jill Hammer and Shoshana Jedwab Deep in kabbalah and hidden corners of the Bible, legacies of the Divine Mother abound. She is known as Cosmic Womb, Holy of Holies, Cloud of Glory, Lady Wisdom, Sabbath Queen and, simply, Earth. Through prayer, chanting, silence and stories we will learn about and experience the feminine face of Judaism. With these experienced teachers, we will explore ancient archetypes that are applicable to spiritual seekers today.

15 FOR MY BAT MITZVAH PROJECT I AM COLLECTING CHILDREN S BOOKS FOR BOOKS ARE WINGS. THEIR MISSION IS TO PUT FREE BOOKS IN THE HANDS OF CHILDREN. LAST YEAR THEY WERE ABLE TO GIVE OUT OVER 50,000 BOOKS AND I NEED YOUR HELP SO THEY CAN REACH OUT TO EVEN MORE KIDS. NEW AND GENTLY USED BOOKS CAN BE PLACED IN THE BOX OUTSIDE THE TEMPLE OFFICE. 19 Shabbat Mornings Early Service in the Fishbein Chapel The 8 AM Shabbat service in the Fishbein Chapel is a favorite of those who are up early and like an abbreviated davening. This service is lay led. Participants enjoy a warm camaraderie that enhances the spirited singing in the worship experience. Sanctuary Service in the Main Sanctuary Each week, services are held at 9:30 AM in the Main Sanctuary for the entire Emanu-El community. This service is where members celebrate a host of life cycle celebrations, including baby-namings, Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations, Aufrufs in a nticipation of forthcoming weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and trips to Israel. All these celebrations are conducted within the embrace and support of the congregation that gathers faithfully to daven, learn and socialize together. All are welcome. Regulars are ready to help newcomers to find their way and become comfortable in the service. Minyan Hadash Minyan Hadash meets the 2nd and 4th Shabbat of each month at 9:45 AM in the Fishbein Chapel. The style of the minyan is lay-led, warm and informal. It is a traditional, egalitarian, and spirited service that includes a full Torah reading, a brief D var Torah, and all of the other parts of the service. People of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate. Soulful Shabbat Shabbat each week reminds us that meaning in our lives lies not in what we accomplish but in being part of the universe. Soulful Shabbat meets the 3rd Shabbat of each month at 10:00 AM for a Shabbat morning worship experience that creates a space for pause and reflection by simplifying and slowing down the traditional Shabbat service. Soulful Shabbat, led by Rabbi Alan Flam, emphasizes silence, quiet melody, meditation, and movement, along with traditional davening and Torah study.
