1 Kalima Taieba Newsletter Volume 1, Issue 1 Term 1, 201 Honesty; the Behaviour of Muslims When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour (the Day of Judgment). Prophet Muhammad words. Al Amin, the Prophet Muhammad once gathered all the people of Mecca and asked them, "O people of Mecca! If I say that an army is advancing on you from behind the mountains, will you believe me?" All said in one voice, "Yes, because we have never heard you telling a lie." This honesty; is an essential ingredient of the Muslim character, includes being truthful towards Allah by worshipping Him sincerely; being truthful to oneself, by adhering to Allah's laws; and being truthful with others by speaking the truth and being honest in all dealings, such as buying, selling and marriage. There should be no deceiving, cheating, falsifying or withholding of information; thus a person should be the same on the inside as he is on the outside. For those who wish to be among the truthful, Prophet Muhammad has left us with these words of guidance, "Let he who believes in God and the Last Day either speak good or keep silent". (Saheeh Muslim) Excursions and Activities of Term One It was a very exciting term with its lessons, activities and excursions. We studied a lot of Islamic topics; including Prophets and Companions stories, Muslim inventors, How to make Wudu and Salah, the difference between Quran and Sunnah and many other interesting topics. We watched many videos about Islamic topics as Mathematics in Quran, The Return of Jesus, Men of the Cave, Time to Pray with Zak, Islamic Songs and many others. We did some hand crafts and coloring activities as well. We went to Ice-skating and had a lot of fun. It was the first time for some of us, but we really enjoyed it. We also went to an Egg-hunting Fun day in Whiteman Park and did many activities and had heaps of funny staff. Our last trip for this term was Captain Cook Cruise to Fremantle. You can see our pictures on Kalima Taieba Face book. Special points of interest: Kalima Taieba (including Iqra wa Irtaqi and Dar Alarqam activities) is now part of Perth Arabic Association Inc. Welcome to our new friends; Yaseen and Shams Masoud, Ahmed and Omar Elantabli, Moemen and Omar Hassan, Yaseen Bashir, and Laura and Lyan Maali who joined us in this term. Thanks to our volunteer teachers; Mr. Mohamed, Basima, Enas, Elham, Mais and Sahar. Inside this issue: IBN AL-HAYTHAM 2 THE MIRACLES OF 2 QURAN QURAN AND SUN- NAH DID YOU KNOW???? 2 Page 2 Kalima Taieba Newsletter Abu Ali al-hasan ibn al-hasan ibn al- Haytham (965 in Basra c in Cairo) How could we take the really interesting shots of our favorite scenes and memories without HIS invention?!!! Ayu Danadyaksa wrote: Ibn Al-Haytham was born in Basra, Iraq more than 1000 years ago. He did significant improvements in optics and physical science. Sana Merza added: Ibn Al-Haytham added major contributions to Astronomy, Mathematics, Ophthalmology, Philosophy, and Visual Perception. He also wrote insightful commentaries on works by Aristotle, Ptolemy, and Euclid. Amara Ali added: Ibn Al- Haytham invented the CAMERA which was then modified to the new stylish shapes and uses of our modern camera. Asmaa Alkordi wrote: Ibn Al-Haytham used experimental evidence to check his theories, which was unusual for his time because physics before him was more like philosophy; IBN AL-HAYTHAM without experiment. He was the first to introduce experimental evidence as a requirement for accepting a theory. His book of Optics was actually a critique of Ptolemy s book Almagest. A thousand years on, this Optics book is still quoted by professors training research students to be factual and not be swayed by opinions or prejudice. Some science historians believe that Snell s law in optics actually resides in the work of Ibn Al- Haytham. For more information on Ibn Al-Haytham, pls visit: wiki/alhazen The Holy Qura n Amara Ali wrote: One of the things that prove that Qura n is the words of Allah, is that Qura n informs us of the scientific facts that no one could previously known about when the Qura n was first revealed; 1400 years ago. The information provided in Qura n about the sun for example is just one of these amazing The Miracles of Qura n miracles. Mathematical Miracles of Qura n include: The word Punishment is repeated 117 times in the whole Qura n, while the word Forgiveness is repeated 24 times (double the punishment words). Some words have been equally repeated in Qura n for a significant meaning as: World and Hereafter, Zakah and Barakah (blessings), Heaven and Hell, Woman and Man, and Devil and Angels. The words Land and Sea has been mentioned in Qura n in the same percentage of their existence on earth. Subhan Allah. 2
3 Volume 1, Issue 1 Page Qura n and Sunnah Qura n is the word of Allah and the foundation of Islamic law. Qura n has been revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by the Angel Gabriel. Sunnah is every saying and action of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It explains and details the laws found in Qura n. Qura n takes precedence over Sunnah in two ways: first, Qura n is the exact words of Allah, miraculous in nature, down to the last verse. Second, Sunnah is not the exact words of Allah, but rather their meanings as explained by the Prophet. Qura n and Sunnah together form the basis of Shariah or Islamic law. Qura n provides the general injunctions that formed the basis of law, without too much details except for some general principles. Qura n comes with tenets of belief, sets down acts of worship, and provides moral guidelines. Sunnah clarifies Qura n in many ways, for example, praying. The prophet explains how to pray through his own prayers. He said: Pray as you have seen me praying. For Hajj, Prohphet Muhammad says: Take the rites of Hajj from me. By Shams Masoud. articles/1024 Within a few years of the spread of Islam, great civilizations and universities were flourishing. Hoping to see all of you next term. Enjoy your holidays and have a safe and fun time. dar-alarqam@perth-arabic.asn.au All our Best Regards from: Kalima Taieba Team How Do Muslims Treat the Elderly?? Caring for one's parents in Islam is considered an honour and a blessing, and an opportunity for great spiritual growth. In the Islamic world, one rarely finds "old people's homes." The strain of caring for one's parents in this most difficult time of their lives is considered an honour and a blessing and an opportunity for great spiritual growth. In Islam, it is not enough that we only pray for our parents, but we should act with limitless compassion, remembering that when we were helpless children, they preferred us to themselves. Mothers are particularly honoured. When Muslim parents reach old age, they are treated mercifully, with kindness and selflessness. In Islam, serving one's parents is a duty second to prayer, and it is their right to expect it. It is considered despicable to express any irritation when, through no fault of their own, the old become difficult. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: He is not one of us (a Muslim) who does not respect the Elders and care after the Youngest. We need to remember that one day we will also be elders and we will be in real need for a kind and passionate treatment from others. Precious Words from the Holly Quran My Lord, have mercy on them, since they cared for me when I was small. (Quran 17: 24) 6
