REVIEW 1. Believe in One God 2. Believe in the Angels 3. Believe in the Books 4. Believe in the Prophets 5. Divine Decree 6. The Day of Judgment The Five Pillars Five Pillars of Islam Proclamation of Faith Shahadah Prayer Salah Fasting Sawm Charity Zakah Pilgrimage To Mecca Hajj 8

1. Proclamation of Faith (Shahada) La ilaha illa Allah wa-muhammad Rasul Allah. There is no god but God. Muhammad is the Prophet of God. 2. Required Prayer (Salah) v Every Muslim is required to pray 5 times a day v Muslims recite verses from the Qur an during the prayer 3. Fasting (Sawm) What is it? During the month of Ramadan No eating, drinking or smoking From Sunrise to Sunset Why? Spiritual training Feeling with the poor, lonely Appreciating blessings 27 9

4. Charity (Zakah) Zakah means: purifica1on and growth If a Muslim is able: He or She gives 2.5% of their excess wealth to charity each year. Giving Charity helps Muslims remember that what they own belongs to God, not them. 5. Pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) Perform pilgrimage at least once in the lifetime Ka ba is an empty cube believed to be built by Abraham and his son Ishmael 29 The Quran and The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) 10

Qur an Literal meaning: the recitation Actual word of God, revealed to Mohammed (PBUH) in Arabic via the angel Gabriel, throughout a period of 23 years Book of divine guidance for mankind Final revelation of God with a universal message to all of humanity. Al-Fatiha - The Opening In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Praise be to God, the Cherisher, the Sustainer of the worlds. Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Master of the day of Judgment. It is You we worship, and Your Aid we seek. Show us the straight path. The path of those whom you have blessed, not the path of those who earned your anger, nor the path of those who have gone astray.. -Amen MUHAMMAD ( ) Peace Be Upon Him Before Prophethood Born in 570 A.D. in the city of Mecca An orphan and raised by his uncle Known for being a trustworthy, generous and sincere person Could not read or write 11

MUHAMMAD ( ) Peace Be Upon Him. As a Prophet A man chosen by God to deliver His message to all of humanity Received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel when he was 40 and the revelation continued for 23 years Last Prophet to confirm the message of previous prophets to complete the message for later generations Hadith & Sunnah Hadith: literally means "narra1ve Oral tradi1ons rela1ng to his words and deeds Sunnah: literally means trodden path Way and the manners of the prophet Hadith Example Non-DiscriminaCon: All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-arab nor a non-arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good ac1on. Jesus in Islam (pbuh) 12

Jesus (Isa) Peace Be Upon Him Do Muslims Believe in Jesus? JESUS (PBUH) AND ISLAM v Considered Messiah by the Muslims v Muslims do not believe that Jesus was the literal son of God, but they do believe he was a miracle of God sent to Mary. Muslims believe in the Virgin Birth. v Muslims do not believe that he died on the cross, but that God eased his suffering and ascended him to the Heaven. v Muslims believe that Jesus will come back and establish peace on the earth. Mary, Mother of Jesus May God Be Pleased With Her There is an entire chapter in The Quran dedicated to Mary, called Mary (Mariam). The Angel Gabriel came to Mary and told her she will give birth to a son Jesus, (pbuh). The angel Gabriel said to Mary, It will happen. God says, It is easy for Me and We will appoint him as a sign for men and a mercy from Us. It is a matter that has already been decided. 19:21 13

Mary, Mother of Jesus May God Be Pleased With Her As an infant Jesus spoke to defend his mother and tell the people he was a prophet of God. He said: Indeed I am a servant of God: He has given me the scripture (the Gospel) and made me a prophet; And He has made me blessed where ever I be, and has commanded me prayer and charity as long as I live; He has made me kind to my Mother, and not arrogant or miserable; and peace is on me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I will be raised (again) to life! 19:30-33 It is not suited for Almighty God that He should father a son. Glory to Him! When He determines anything, He only says to it, Be, and it is. Jesus said: And surely God is my Lord and your Lord: Him Alone, you therefore worship (and serve): This is the straight path. 19: Myths About Islam Women in Islam Considered as vital to life as men Are exempt from financial responsibilities Sons are not to be favored over daughters Have the right to accept or reject marriage proposal 14

Rights of Women Comparison In the USA 1839 Own Property (With permission from husband) 1920 Vote Islam guaranteed these rights in 610AD Men &Women in Islam Pursuit of knowledge is incumbent on all Muslims - male or female. Both are entitled to shares of inheritance Freedom of expression for both Responsibility of maintaining social and moral values lies on men and women. Both are required to act modestly Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors. (Quran 2:190) Jihad means Struggle Greater jihad- the struggle inside oneself. Lesser jihad physical struggle with others. War & Jihad 15
