4 The last sermon (Khutabul Wada) of Prophet Muhammad The brightest day follows the darkest The last sermon of the Prophetpeace be upon him- is known as Khutbatul Wada. It is mentioned in almost all books of Hadith. Following Ahadith in Sahih Al-Bukhari refer to the sermon and quote part of it. (See Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1623, 1626, 6361) Sahih of Imam Muslim also refers to this sermon in Hadith number 98. Imam al-tirmidhi has mentioned this sermon in Hadith nos. 1628, 2046, Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal has given us the longest and perhaps the most complete version of this sermon in his Masnud, Hadith no This Khutbah of the Prophet-peace be upon him- was long and it contained much guidance and instructions on many issues. The Prophet-peace be upon him- gave this sermon in front of a large gathering of people during Hajj. Whosoever heard whatever part of the sermon reported it and later some scholars put it together. It is a great khutbah and we should all pay attention to its message and guidance. Following are the basic points mentioned in this khutbah: O People Lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefor listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and take these words to those who could not be present here today. O People Just as you regard this month, this day, this city as sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. Allah has forbidden you to take usury (interest); therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. Allah has Judged that there shall be no interest and that all interest due to Abbas Ibn Abd al Muttalib (the Prophet s uncle) shall henceforth be waived. Beware of Satan for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things. O People 4

5 It is true that you have certain rights in regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives, only under Allah s trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat you women well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with anyone of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste. O People Listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in Zakat. Perform Hajj if you can afford to. All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-arab nor a non-arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black, nor a black has any superiority over a white- except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim, which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not therefor, do injustice to yourselves. Remember one day you will appear before Allah and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone. People, no prophet or apostle will come after me and no new faith will be born. Reason well therefore, O people, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Quran and the Sunnah (Hadith), and if you follow these you will never go astray. All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listened to me directly. 6 Kindness to Animals Naureen Mallick with Zainab Habib Islam enjoins kindness to animals?! The youngster looked at me with a mixture of incredulity and disbelief. Not just animals.but ALL of Allah s creation - and that includes our environment, I replied, gently taking the stick away from him and patting the recently-mauled daffodils. The 8-something boy had been chasing a wild hare through the open yard, thrashing at everything in his path with a broken tree limb...as restless boys in summer vacation are wont to do, uncaring, or perhaps more correctly, uninformed. You remember what I told you about our beloved Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) being the kindest of men? Well yes. But I thought you meant to human beings. What has that got to with these wild animals? he demanded a little defiantly. All creatures are dependents of Allah. We human beings are the most noble and favored of Allah s creation, and so are responsible for taking care of this earth and all that is in it. That means that animals have a right to be treated with care and compassion. We have been told by our Prophet (s.a.w): When you travel through green and lush land, give the camels their due from the ground, and when you travel through a dry and barren land, make them walk quickly lest their strength falters. [Muslim] His eyes widened: Like seriously??!! Our Prophet (s.a.w) had time to pay attention to animals? I nodded in affirmation: AND he told other Muslims to take care of them and other creatures too. Like one time, he passed by a camel whose belly was sticking to its back (because of hunger), so he admonished, Fear Allah in respect of these dumb (animals). [Abu Dawud]. As if by coincidence, we had reached the bird house by the pond by this time. I handed him a pot of bird feed in his eagerly-outstretched hands. It was an opportune setting to tell him: Did I tell you about the man who saw a dog eating mud from (the severity of) thirst. So, that man took a shoe (and filled it) with water and kept on pouring the water for the dog till it quenched its thirst. So Allah approved of his deed and made him to enter Paradise. (Bukhari) He looked ruefully down at his summer sandals: Too bad I am not wearing my sneakers today. I had to smile at his literal interpretation and could almost see a very wet and muddy pair of boys sneakers on his doorstep. But to continue..there was once a woman who entered the (Hell) Fire because of a cat which she had tied, neither giving it food, nor setting it free to eat from the vermin of the earth. (Bukhari) He stopped quite suddenly, as if my words had hit a chord somewhere. Wait a minute. So you are saying that being kind to animals can determine our fate in the Hereafter? Well yes, we human beings have responsibilities towards all the creatures around us. Fulfilling these responsibilities earns us reward and neglecting them is serious business. When the people asked our Prophet (s.a.w), O Allah s Messenger (s.a.w), is there a reward for us in serving (the) animals? he replied, Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate (living being). (Bukhari) AND we have been forbidden from 6

7 being cruel to them. Our Prophet (s.a.w) passed by some people shooting arrows at a ram and he was displeased. Said the Prophet (s.a.w), Do not disfigure animals (by using them as targets). (An-Nasai). He prohibited the eating of Mujath-thamah - what is trapped and killed by arrows. (Tirmidhi) And yet another one. of displeasure. when an ass with a brand on the face passed before him, and our Prophet (s.a.w) said, May Allah curse the one who has branded it (on the face). (Muslim). Our Prophet (s.a.w) was Rahmatul-lil- Aalameen - A mercy to the worlds. He was not a man to use unkind words or wish anybody ill, but here was a matter of cruelty to another creature. Our Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) was a mercy to the worlds? I could see from the look on his face that this was the first time he d heard this about our beloved Prophet. (s.a.w) Oh yes, Allah tells him in the Quran (21:107), And We have not sent you, except as a mercy to the worlds. He was a man of such gentle care and compassion for every living thing. Do not cut the forelocks, manes, or tails of horse, for their tails are their means of driving flies, their manes provide them with warmth, and blessing is tied to their forelock, he (s.a.w) commanded. (Abu Dawud) Someone took a bird s eggs and the bird began to flutter restlessly around the head of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), so he (s.a.w) asked, Which of you has taken its eggs? A man said, Messenger of Allah (s.a.w), I have taken its eggs, and he (s.a.w) commanded, Return them out of mercy to the bird. (Al-Adab Al-Mufrad) He let this sink in, then almost immediately came back with: But what about those people who go hunting and gaming? Killing without need is not permissible. I answered. Our Prophet (s.a.w) said: There is no person who kills a small bird or anything larger for no just reason, but Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, will ask him about it. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what does just reason; mean? He said: That you slaughter it and eat it, and do not cut off its head and throw it aside. (An-Nasai) He (s.a.w) cursed those who take anything that has a soul as a target. (An- Nasai ) But we do eat meat, right? Doesn t the animal suffer when it s killed? he asked. While Muslims may only kill as is needed to meet their requirements for food, even then, strict guidelines must be followed to minimize the animal s suffering. Our method of sacrifice ensures this. Our Prophet (s.a.w) said, Verily, Allah has prescribed excellence in everything. So if you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain. (Muslim) Muslims have their own special way of killing an animal? Wow! Now THAT is something I d like to hear more about! I patted him gently on the head: That my dear is another discussion. Almost as an after-thought, an idea suddenly sparked. I took out the sapling that I was I meaning to give my elderly neighbor from my tote-bag and handed it to him: Now run along and remember the Prophet (s.a.w) told us, There is none amongst the Muslims who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as a charitable gift for him. (Bukhari) 7

13 During winter MCA HOPE program goes to a homeless shelter and distributes hot Dinners among the residents of the shelter. In summer, they make sandwiches at MCA and deliver to San Jose shelter. Cresent, ECHO and One Ummah jointly cosponsor the program. Lot of volunteers participate in this event. This year HOPE has distributed first winter hot food on November 25 at Sunnyvale winter shelter. 13

16 Rohingya Refugee Support Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims are on an exodus from Myanmar where they have faced persecution for many years. Most have migrated to Bangladesh where they are in great need for food, water, shelter, medicines, clothing and basic necessities of life in this critical time.
