4 Growing up Muslim in a Christmas world By Samana Siddiqui I grew up saturated in Christmas every December. I loved the minty tang of candy canes, the Christmas specials of my favorite sitcoms, and the days off from school. But I was, and am, a Muslim. For my parents, that meant that while I could enjoy some of the cultural aspects of the holiday, setting up a tree in the living room with gifts beneath, along with lights, ornaments, alcoholfree eggnog, and a gingerbread house was a tad bit too much. Muslims have Eid, they explained, and that was fine with me, too. So I grew up expecting Eid to be exciting, while surrounded by Christmas festivity.but it was far more complex than that. I was never surrounded by Eid as I am Christmas. And nothing brings this point home to me more than my own children s reactions, 30 years later, to the beautiful Christmas lights dotting the homes of our suburb. I interpret their sighs of delight to some sort of feeling that Eid is lacking. Which is why I remind them how Eid is so awesome, nudging them to recall all of the things my husband and I have done to make their holiday memorable. Gifts? Check. Family gettogether and fancy clothes? Always. A sense of shared holiday spirit with other Muslims. Of course.but it still bothers me. I feel like ranting about how when I was your age, I prayed on the cold concrete of a hall where wrestling matches were held, not the carpeted, plush floor of a Holiday Inn banquet hall; I never got gifts, just cash that was handed over to my parents once we got home from Eid festivities; I didn t party with a horde of cousins my age, but mostly family friends whose kids were older or younger. But amazingly, I still had fun and loved Eid, looking forward to my holiday, even though my non-muslim friends were collecting gift upon gift, and Christmas artwork in class every December was an expected part of the school curriculum. But as is the case of many parents of my generation, we seek the bigger, the better for our own children. And when it comes to our celebrations, Christmas is our reference point, the standard that we seek to make Eid in America live up to. We may not put up date palm trees in our living rooms, but we make sure our kids have the pricey gifts; we put up lights and decorations in our homes, maybe even our cars; we invest in Eid Mubarak! balloons, banners, streamers, and even bibs (as I made my one-year-old wear on Eid-ul-Fitr this year).i was making Eid a competition with Christmas which it s not. And it was my kids who made me realize it. Abbu was saying the lights look so nice, my nine-year-old told me, while we were recently driving past a home with Christmas finery on display. They re okay, she said shrugging nonchalantly. Do you feel like you re missing anything when it s Christmas? I asked hopefully. It was a tense moment. Nah, she said, wrinkling her nose. I have two Eids. Christmas only happens once a year. It was clear then, that I had been projecting my own sense of competition and inadequacy onto my kids, who were oh-so-much wiser than their mother. So while I ll still be looking for nice gifts, I can probably ease up on making my Eid more Christmas-y next year. growing-up-muslim-in-a-christmasworld 4

5 8 Tips to simplify your Spare Hijabs How do you know if you have a few too many hijabs? If you open your hijab drawer and feel lost then you ve got too many hijabs. If you re getting ready and it s taking forever to pick a hijab because you have so many of them then you have too many spares. And if you just bought a hijab only to find that you have another hijab in the same color and shade and you have no idea where it came from then sister, you have too many hijabs. A friend once gave me a blue Amira hijab after she came back from her trip to Jordan. She told me she picked this color because she sees me wearing a blue hijab all the time, you must like that hijab a lot - I laughed when she said that because that was the only hijab that I owned and wore it all the time. Fast forward 15 years, now I have many hijabs in beautiful colors alhamdulillah. And like you, I too reach for the same hijabs again and again. Farhana at simplymuslimmom.com So here are a few things that you can do with your spare hijabs- Sort them- Hijabs tend to fall under 2 categories- 1. You like the hijab and You wear it. ( it looks good on you, you like the color, fabric, size, shape, it stays put etc.) 2. I like the hijab but I don t wear it. ( it doesn t look good on you, I bought it because it was so cheap, my sister-in-law looked good in it so I bought one too, received as a gift from husband, wrong size, shape, uncomfortable fabric that doesn t stay put etc.) Sort all your hijabs into 2 piles. This won t be easy in the beginning because your mind will try to come up with all kinds of excuses to keep them, like what if you changed your mind one day and started loving that neon orange hijab? Or, you have kept them for 12 years, a few more won t hurt. And then, you have wasted so much money on these hijabs and now you will just give them away? And lastly, what if your husband/mother in law/ sister finds out you gave away the hijab they gave you for Eid in circa 2001? So take a deep breath and keep on working toward sorting your hijab collections into 2 piles. Because, by now you re familiar with your hijab style and know which hijabs you will be wearing as you head out. Knowing your hijab tendencies is such a time, money and energy saver, subhanallah! Organize the keepers- The hijabs that made it to the I like the hijab and I wear it pile now can go to your hijab drawer or closet. Before you put them away, look for any holes to be mended, any stains to be treated, any snag to be fixed etc. If you come across any of those, take care of the issues as soon as you can. Don t put away until they are fixed. Clear the clutter- The pile of hijabs that didn t make the cut is creating the clutter in your drawer 5

Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allaah is Ever Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful [al-ahzaab 33:59] or closet and also on your mind. Every time you looked at them you felt guilty of not wearing a hijab that you d spent good money on or your mom gave it you for your birthday but that s so not your color. Give yourself permission to live free of this negative feeling and start clearing the clutter using the following ways- Sell them- You can sell your unwanted hijabs on online consignment stores like Poshmark, Thred Up etc, ebay or at your local thrift or consignment store. Give them away- Ask your friends on social media if they want any of your hijabs that you don t want any more but are in excellent condition. Don t forget to take pictures before you ask them for faster response ;). Have the hijabs laundered before they are picked. Have a hijab swap party- Organize a hijab swap party and have sisters over for some fun time. You can ask your guests to bring a dessert to share and offer tea or coffee to go with the desserts and a have a great time. Donate them- Find a thrift store or consignment store that takes hijabs aka scarves. Sometime you can donate them at your local masjid as well. Call ahead and make sure if this donation is accepted before you drop of a big box hijabs. Reuse them- You can make hijabs and clothes with your unwanted hijabs for your kids dolls. Add them to your kids dress up clothes bin. Keep one or two as spare hijabs in your car for a hijab emergency. Once you clear the clutter of too many spare hijabs you will feel much better insha Allah. No more piles of hijabs staring at you. And no more neon prints teasing you. 6

8 Call a family meeting about Christmas By Staff Writer Sound Vision With the ubiquitous decorations, Santa Claus beckoning, and classmates anxiously awaiting their presents, your kids are probably wondering once again: what s the big deal about Christmas? Some of them may have just accustomed themselves to the yearly celebration. Younger kids may be feeling curious, jealous even, of all of the excitement surrounding the event. This is why it s critical to share the Islamic perspective on Christmas with your kids. Even if they know what it s about, they may feel left out, pressured, or even confused about it and where they stand as Muslims. Here are some ways to bring it up with them. 1. Call a family meeting While you can talk about the issue individually, the benefit of getting everyone together is that they can find out how different age groups are handling it. Dealing with Christmas in the office is different from facing it in high school or elementary school. 2. Start with the recitation of the Quran Begin with a recitation of Surah Al Fatiha, the first chapter of the Quran. Follow it up with a recitation of Surah al-ikhlas, the 112th chapter of the Quran. Make sure the translations of both are read out loud. You can have each recitation done by a different family member. 3. Get to know the territory Have everyone share what kids at school, coworkers at the office, or the neighbors have been saying about Christmas. Whether it s plans to go to church for Mass, visiting relatives, or getting lots of gifts under the Christmas tree, get as much information as possible so that each point can be addressed. 4. Discuss Muslim and Christian beliefs about Jesus, peace be upon him. Knowing these similarities and differences will teach them to respect beliefs different from their own. Ignorance only fuels misunderstanding. It will be good for parents to read our article about similarities and differences in the Christian and Islamic belief in Jesus, peace be upon him. 5. Explain the need for multicultural understanding The USA is a rich mosaic of colors, cultures and backgrounds. There are more than 80 million people of color in America. There are followers of Native American faiths, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs who live in the US and practice their faith, while the majority of people here are born into the Christian faith. Each religious group has its celebrations and festivals. Just as Christians have their Christmas, for instance, Muslims have their Eids. It s important for Muslims to know about Christmas, just as we expect people of other faiths to know about Eid. 6. Stress the importance of respect for other faiths in Islam Share how Islam has taught us to respect others beliefs and faith traditions, emphasizing that disagreement must never amount to disrespect. Use examples from the life of Prophet Muhammed, peace and blessings be upon him, to show how he gave the utmost respect to other religious groups by allowing them to pray in his own mosque and by instituting the freedom of religion and self-governence in the constitution of Madinah. 8

9 7. Emphasize the respect for Jesus and all Prophets in Islam Explain how every Prophet in Islam is treated with dignity and respect. One example is how we say peace be upon him after each of their names. Another is how they are highly praised by God in the Quran. Jesus, peace be upon him, is important because belief in him can serve as a bridge between Muslims and Christians. 8. Talk about gifts and decorations You can t talk about Christmas without discussing these two elements of the celebration. Don t be surprised if your kids share feelings of longing for presents and pretty decorations. Ask them what would make Eid, their holiday, special for them. Gifts? A trip? This should lead to a lively discussion and great ideas that you can implement next Eid Insha Allah (God willing). 9. Respecting others does not mean compromising your faith Islam is a unique faith which asks Muslims to believe in all the Prophets, recognize all the Scriptures given to them, respect all other faiths, and not force our faith on anyone else. But at the same time the Prophet Muhammed himself, Allah s peace and blessings be upon him, asked us to be firm about our faith and its practices. Respect for other beliefs never means compromising our faith. God given freedom to practice our religion is also embodied in the constitution of the United States which allows freedom of religion to all citizens. It is in recognition of this freedom and the celebration of diversity in the US that the post office issued the Eid Mubarak stamp as it did for other celebrations. 10. Make the meeting interactive Family meetings should not be just lectures by an adult. Although the topics for this meeting are all serious, you can turn them into interactive sessions based on the age of the children attending. You may decide to do two meetings instead of one. 11. Putting this all into practice When we tested this meeting concept and format in our editor s home, it went very well. The youngest participant was eight years old, was the most active and knew most of the stuff, thanks to the other meetings and the Islamic schools he attends. However, the meeting reinforced the messages which we wanted to come across and the evening ended with a storytelling session with all the lights off. It was fun! 9

16 Self Employment Projects Animal Farming: The majority of the people Hidaya Foundation helps are poor villagers who live in primitive dwellings such as mud huts without electricity. For such people, having a few animals could be a very good way of sustaining themselves for their own personal food as well as for profit and trade. Poultry Farming: Five chickens and one rooster, or a flock of 25 chicks, are given to a family along with feeding supplies (approx. $50 to start a small poultry farm) Goat Farming: Goats are given to poor for milk and goat farming (approx. $240 for pair of goats) Cow Farming: Cows are given to poor for milk and cow farming (approx. $500 each cow) *Currently Hidaya is distributing 120 cows to poor widows and families and is ready to add more, please donate. Small Businesses for the Poor: Hidaya assists poor families and individuals to help them break out of the cycle of poverty by helping them set-up small businesses. Some of these efforts include: Sewing Machine ($75 each) Push Cart and supplies to start a street vending business (approx. $200) Set-up a Retail Shop (approx. $200 - $500) Rice Mill, Powder Crusher, Straw Cutter, Potato Grinder, Juicer (approx. $100 - $300 each) Farmer Assistance: Hidaya helps farmers in economically depressed areas by providing them with seeds, fertilizers, and technical know-how. In addition, Hidaya provides machinery to improve their lands and crop yield. *Currently Hidaya is distributing ammonium sulphate, muriate of potash, and tarps among farmers, please donate.
