4 12 Quranic Verses for Year End Reflection? By: Majd Arbil Islamicity.com Prophet Muhammad reminds us, There are two of God s favors that are forgotten by many people: health and free time. As the year comes to an end and we start a new year, the following verses of the Quran reflect on the importance of time. Your Guardian-Lord is God, Who created the heavens and the earth in six eons, and is firmly established on the throne (of authority): He covers the night as a veil over the day, each seeking the other in swift succession: He created the sun, the moon, and the stars, (all) governed by laws under His command. Is it not His to create and to govern? Blessed be God, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds! - (Quran 7:54) The number of months in the sight of God is twelve (in a year) - so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and 4 the earth; of them four are sacred: this is the ever-true law [of God]. So wrong not yourselves therein, and combat the Pagans all together as they fight you all together. But know that God is with those who restrain themselves. - (Quran 9:36) Are they, then, not aware that they are being tested year-in, year-out? And yet, they do not repent and nor do they learn a lesson (from it). - (Quran 9:126) He it is Who made the sun a shining brightness and the moon a light, and ordained for it phases that you might know the computation of years and the reckoning [of time]. God did not create it but with truth; He makes the signs manifest for a people who have knowledge. - (Quran 10:5) We have made the Night and the Day as two (of Our) Signs: the Sign of the Night have We obscured, while the Sign of the Day We have made to enlighten you; that ye may seek bounty from your Lord, and that ye may know the number and count of the years: all things have We explained in detail. - (Quran 17:12) He will say: What number of years did ye stay on earth? They will answer: We have spent there a day, or part of a day; but ask those who [are able to] count [time]... He will say: You stayed not but a little,- if you had only known! Did you, then, think that We created you in mere idle play, and that you would not have to return to Us?. - (Quran 23: ) By (the Token of) Time (through the ages), Verily Humankind is in loss, Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy. - (Quran 103:1-3)

7 Struggling to maintain the daily prayers? Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri and Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that. [Bukhari] Dear sister, your pain is not lost on Allah. Know that with every tear you shed, He knows. May Allah elevate your rank in Jannah as a reward for your patience. Please do the best you can to establish your prayers. Even when you do miss your obligatory prayers, make the intention to pay them back as soon as you can. Come up with a chart, and tick it off every day, as a way of visually encouraging yourself to continue. Because of your intention to pay them back, even if you die before you manage to pay back all your prayers, trust that it is not difficult for Allah to forgive your debt to Him. Don t give into despair, because your Merciful Creator loves you, and wants good for you. Family O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous. [Qur an, 2:21] It is heartbreaking when the ones we love do not practice Islam. It is normal to fear for them, and to fret about their station with Allah. Despite that, as impossible as this may feel, please do your best to worry about your own acts of worship. You have no control over what your husband and children do. The more you ache over them, then the more your health will be affected. You were not placed on this planet to worship your husband or your children you were placed here to worship Allah alone. You are responsible for your actions, and they are responsible for theirs. Children One of my teachers, Ustadha Mariam Bashar, gave me some insight into how a mother can deal with a child (or children) who do not practice the deen. She reminded us that it is natural for any mother to blame herself for the wrongdoings of their children. However, she pointed out that if that really were the case, then Prophet Nuh and Prophet Ya qub (upon them be blessings and peace) would have been bad parents (wa al-iyadhu bi Allah). She went on explain that it is possible for perfectly good parents even Prophets to have children who behave in ways displeasing to Allah. Lead them by example, and through being emotionally connected with them. Are your children teenagers? I encourage you to read up on the relevant Aha! Parenting strategies. Again, this leads back to you establishing your own prayers and finding your own inner place of calm. God It was narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon a young man who was dying and said: How do you feel? He said: I have hope in Allah, O Messenger of Allah, but I fear my sins. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These two things (hope and fear) do not coexist in the heart of a person in a situation like this, but Allah will give him that which he hopes for and keep him safe from that which he fears. [Sunan Ibn Majah] The more you know Allah, then the more you will love Him. Please reach out to authentic classes about Islamic belief, to help you better understand the attributes of Allah. Until registration opens, I suggest that you browse and benefit from SeekersHub s on-demand courses and podcasts. Depression I suggest that you speak to a Muslim counsellor, therapist or psychologist who can help you learn better coping tools. If a Muslim one is not available, then seek out a culturally-sensitive one. Depression is something you can overcome, but it is too difficult to do so alone. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Know that you can better nourish your family when you yourself are nourished. Pain It is very difficult to be in chronic pain. What kind of chronic pain support do you have? Have you considered acupuncture or other alternative therapies? I pray that Allah heals your sorrow, and draws you closer to Him. 7

10 Virtues of Listening to The Friday Khutbah Listening attentively to the khateeb on Friday is an obligation, and it is not permissible for the Muslims to be careless about that and fidget, talk or ignore the khutbah. The following ahaadeeth have been narrated concerning the virtues of listening attentively to the khutbah. Expiation for sins committed between this Friday and the previous Friday. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever does ghusl, then comes to Jumu ah, and prays what is decreed for him, then listens attentively until the khutbah is over, then prays with him (the imam), will be forgiven (his sins) between that and the next Jumu ah, and three days more. Narrated by Muslim (857); a similar report was narrated from Salmaan al- Faarisi by al-bukhaari (883). For every step he takes to the mosque, the reward of fasting and praying qiyaam for one year will be recorded for him. It was narrated that Aws ibn Aws said: 10 The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever washes his head and his body (ghusl) on Friday, then sets out early, is present at the beginning of the khutbah and is close (to the imam), then listens attentively, for every step he takes he will have the reward of fasting and praying qiyaam for one year. Narrated by al-tirmidhi (496) who said: it is a hasan hadeeth. It was classed as saheeh by al-bayhaqi in al-sunan al-kubra (3/227) and by al-albaani in Saheeh al-tirmidhi. The reward for praying Jumu ah depends on listening attentively. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: If you say to your companion, Listen attentively on a Friday, when the imam is delivering the khutbah, then you have engaged in idle speech. Narrated by al-bukhaari (934) and Muslim (851). The one who listens attentively will have two kafl of reward. Ali ibn Abi Taalib delivered a khutbah in Kufah and said in his khutbah: If a man sits in a place where he can hear and see (the imam) and listens attentively and does not engage in idle speech or fidgeting, he will have two shares of reward. If he stays far away and sits in a place where he cannot hear but he listens attentively and does not engage in idle speech or fidgeting, he will have one share of reward. If he sits in a place where he can hear and see but he engages in idle speech or fidgets and does not listen attentively, then he will have one share of sin. And at the end of that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say that. Narrated by Abu Dawood (1051) and classed as da eef (weak) by al-albaani. A similar report was narrated from Abu Umaamah in a marfoo report in al-mu jam al-kabeer (8/165) and in a mursal report from Yahya ibn Abi Katheer in Musannaf Abd al-razzaaq (3/223). And Allaah knows best.
