Nathan Carden Sermon: Hey Neighbor! It is the season of making resolutions, fresh starts, and re-inventing yourself. For the next few weeks, the treadmills at the gym will have a waiting line, dieters will reach for the organic Greek antimicrobial yogurt instead of ice cream, and ash trays will be a little less full. The closest we ever come to feeling like real change is possible is around this time of year, but our resolutions rarely change us very much. I ate my turnip greens and black-eyed peas again this year, watched more football than is recommended by the Surgeon General, but when it comes down to it, I usually feel like the same person on January 1st that I was on the last day of December. But there is no other time of the year where people are so convinced that they can change in dramatic fashion. We vow to lose weight, to save money, to be better parents, to exercise more, to read that Russian novel. We desperately want change in our lives, and the new year makes that obvious. But what it also makes clear is that few of us are actually willing to change. One of the many blessings of faith in Jesus Christ is that we Christians believe that any day can be a new beginning. Any old Tuesday, your world can be turned upside down and inside out by the grace of Jesus Christ, and you can have a fresh start. And that may be why I am always so confused by our culture s customs around the New Year we seem convinced that we can change ourselves. Even though we all lived through last year s resolutions and saw how those turned out, when December 31 rolls around again, we will make the same promises to ourselves, believing that on willpower alone, we can reinvent our identity. But Christianity teaches us something about change. Real and genuine change comes not from our own doing, but from our willingness to partner with God and the Body of Christ. The brave men and women of Alcoholics Anonymous and other support groups have something to teach us Sunday morning folks about change, because their entire process revolves around God and mutual support. They are able to change their lives precisely because they acknowledge they need help, and they cannot do it on their own. One of the most important functions of Christian fellowship is to create partnerships of transformation, where we shape one another through accountability, prayer, and friendship. When church works, it is two or three gathered in the name of Christ to be Christ for one another. Beginning this week, Trinity is going to begin a new year s resolution a shared ministry goal for the 2015 calendar year. It s simple, direct, and straight from the heart of Jesus: We want to be a better neighbor. For the next twelve months, we are going to find new ways to reach out to our community as a church, as individual disciples of Christ, and as families. We are calling this campaign Hey Neighbor, and beginning this Sunday through the first Sunday of February (Connect Sunday), Nathan and I will be preaching on ways we can start to recognize the mission field God has planted us in. On our own, our resolutions are likely to turn out the way they always have. But when we band together as the Body of Christ, fueled by the Holy Spirit new life is on the way. See you Sunday. Brian
