2 SUNDAY, MARCH 25 FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary The 8:45 AM worship service is broadcast via 15-minute delay from 9-10 AM Sundays on WAPI-1070 AM and FM. SERMON BRIAN MCLAREN A New Kind of Christianty MUSIC 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary Choir & Seeds of Faith MINISTER ON CALL Drew Holland, WESLEY HALL 11:15 AM Dr. Dave Barnhart Forgive Us Our Trespasses A LOOK AT MARCH 18 1,003 Worship Attendance 538 Sunday School Attendance Lenten Offering Letson Kachoronga is a farmer, but that s a bit like saying Leonardo DaVinci was a painter. Letson trains people in Africa in sustainable high-yield farming techniques. Although Zambia has rich soil and abundant natural resources, like the rest of Africa, it lags in food production. People using no-till and no-burn techniques can multiply their yield up to ten times. Letson lives and works at the new SIFAT (Servants in Faith and Technology) training center and United Methodist offices in Lusaka, Zambia. He works there, and the center continues to grow there, because of your outstanding generosity and second-mile giving during Lent last year. In the 40 days of Lent leading up to Easter, we ask our members to go the second mile and give sacrificially in order to sustain our ministries beyond the church walls. Because of your generosity, Church of the Reconciler feeds hundreds of people every week, and along with Firehouse Shelter and Birmingham Hospitality Network has helped scores of people get off the streets and into transitional housing. Promise Homes is building a new residence for adults with special needs at Bluff Park UMC. Babies First helps pregnant young women make the transition to successful motherhood. In the coming months, we will be offering educational mission field trips on Sunday mornings so that Trinity members can learn about just a few of the ways we are involved in ministries all over Birmingham. 80% of our second-mile giving goes to ministries right here in our city, but our reach is global. We are changing lives for entire communities in other hemispheres. This Lent, please prayerfully consider a second-mile gift to help multiply our ministry beyond the church walls. Like Letson s crops, your gift will be multiplied many times over and change lives all over the world. Yours in Christ, A PERSONAL WORD Dave Barnhart information for guests & new members Welcome to Trinity United Methodist Church! Our mission is to Gather people to Christ, Grow people in Christ, Go to serve Christ in the world and Glorify Christ. 3 Lenten Sermon Series The Lord s Prayer Teach us to pray! The disciples asked Jesus one day... Perhaps they asked this question because they saw the centrality and power of prayer in Jesus life. Jesus responded to their request by giving us the words of the Lord s Prayer. In these words we find a model for all prayer. During Lent we will use the Lord s Prayer as the central theme of our worship and reflections. 4 Resurrection Rolls A fun and meaningful Easter activity for you and your kids! INGREDIENTS: - One can of crescent roll dough - 8 large marshmallows (or one for each roll you ll be making) - Melted butter - Cinnamon sugar - Bible or Easter storybook Assemble rolls and read the story: 1. Read John 19 while the oven is pre-heating according to the package directions. If you re really on top of things, spend the week before reading John with your kids. 4 Children s Lenten Project In the Lord s Prayer we ask God to Give us this day our daily bread. Want to help give daily bread? You can! Grace s Kitchen feeds people who do not always have daily bread. On Thursdays, Grace s Kitchen offers breakfast and a sack lunch at a park downtown. Hungry people come from all around to enjoy the food and know that someone cares for them. All the food is a gift from people like you who have plenty to eat and want to share with those who don t. Below is a list of items they need. Choose something you want to bring, talk to your parents about going shopping to buy it. Bring your food offering to Sunday School by Easter. You may even want to bring something every week! - Sturdy Paper plates - Paper towels - Pancake syrup - Plastic forks and knives - Regular roast Folger s coffee - Food safe plastic gloves - Pure vanilla flavoring - Gladware containers (13 cups) - Dried cranberries - Disposable 13x9 aluminum pans - Pecan halves or pieces To learn more about Grace s Kitchen, log on to Questions about this project, contact Jeanne Baswell at or jbaswell@trinitybirmingham.com. 2. Unroll the crescent rolls. Explain that this is like the cloth they wrapped Jesus in. 3. Give your child a marshmallow and explain that it represents Jesus all white and pure because He was without sin. 4. Roll the marshmallows in the melted butter. This symbolizes the embalming oils. 5. Roll the marshmallows in the cinnamon sugar. This is like the spices used to prepare his body for burial. 6. Wrap the marshmallow in the crescent roll cloth, pinching the dough together securely. Don t worry about the shape so much, they ll taste the same no matter how you roll or bundle them. This represents how they would have wrapped Jesus body. 7. Put the rolls in the oven (symbolizing the tomb) and bake for the amount of time specified on the package. 8. While the rolls are baking, read John 20: Open the tomb and remove the rolls. When they re cool enough to handle, break one open and discover what happened to the marshmallow. Jesus is risen! At this point, read 1 Thessalonians 4: Jesus is coming again! Annual Spring Egg Hunt Sunday, April 1 at 4 PM Trinity s Egg Hunt for children ages 2 through 2nd grade will be held on Sunday, April 1 at 4 PM. (McCallum Park in Vestavia Hills) NO RAIN DATE Come join the celebration of finding eggs and enjoying friends!
