DISCOVERY is a 45-hour spiritual retreat geared toward middle school students to be held February It provides an opportunity for our students to not only learn about, but also to experience the love of God. We invite you to join us as we all discover what God has in store for us. This year s theme is TIME. There are many different areas of need for the weekend. We need your help with meals, snacks, set up, clean up and prayer. Prayer for our students You are invited to pray for the weekend and the students that are involved. AND, you do not have to be present at the church building to participate. Please keep the weekend and the students in your prayers. Our own Bishop, Will Willimon, says much the same thing about the questions, Who is a Christian? The best answer you can give is, A Christian is none other than someone who has learned to pray the Lord s Prayer. Of course, what they are talking about is more than just saying the words, mouthing them, if you will. Rather to truly pray is to learn to bend our lives to God and allow God to shape us. For this reason, Rowan warns us that the Lord s Prayer is not an easy prayer. It is not a prayer that pretends...it is a prayer that requires our lives to change. It requires that we become different sorts of people, but it acknowledges that that will only happen when we learn how to depend freely and lovingly on the God who made himself Our Father. Because of this, the Lord s Prayers is a radical prayer. It challenges our assumptions about who we are, who God is, and what the world is like. What it is praying for is a radical change for us and for our world. We are praying for God s kingdom to come and God s will to be done in a world that is more often at odds with God s will. The Lord s Prayer also serves as a model, a template for all prayer. When you pray, pray like this, Jesus said. Christian prayer is always addressed to The Father. It s always prayed from where Jesus stands. All prayer acknowledges our frailty, our needs, and our dependency on God. All prayer makes us aware of the necessity of forgiveness. I invite you during this season of Lent to enter a journey. With the disciples, we are invited to say to Jesus, Lord, teach us to pray. 3 Holy Communion During Lent Lenten Sermon Series The Lord s Prayer Teach us to pray! The disciples asked Jesus one day... Perhaps they asked this question because they saw the centrality and power of prayer in Jesus life. Jesus responded to their request by giving us the words of the Lord s Prayer. In these words we find a model for all prayer. Bishop Will Willmon has written that prayer is bending ourselves toward God. The Lord s Prayer is a lifelong act of bending our lives toward God. In learning to pray this Prayer, we are being formed and shaped by God in particular ways. During Lent we will use the Lord s Prayer as the central theme of our worship and reflections. This offering goes to support ministries beyond the walls of Trinity. These outreach ministries touch the lives of children, the poor, the elderly, the homeless and people in other countries or in disaster situations. OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE AT COR Different small groups from Trinity procure, prepare, deliver and serve breakfast/brunch meals each Thursday to the homeless at the Church of the Reconciler. There is presently a need for a new group to take the 5th Thursday of the month. If you feel called to lead a small group to do this please contact David Miller, or dmiller5@bham.rr.com for more details. Serving teams arrive at COR about 9:00 AM, serve at 9:30 AM and depart about 10:00 AM. This is a GREAT small group outreach ministry. Exceptional Foundation Chili Cook Off, March 3 Please Support Trinity s Team! Trinity is sponsoring a team to participate in this year s Chili Cook Off presented by The Exceptional Foundation. The event is being held on Saturday, March 3 from 10am to 3pm in the parking lot next to Homewood Park. This Week s God Moment...and last but not least, God always perseveres For the last several years, I have picked a word that I would focus on for that year. One year it was the word Lord, then it was the words Healer or Jehovah Rapha, then it was Rescuer, and last year the word was Power. Each year, I usually find some kind of thread through where God reveals Himself to me through that word. He is always stretching me and growing me, and there are so many facets to God and how He works in our lives and how He expects us to relate to others. Well, this year, I have felt like the word I am supposed to focus on is Love. To learn more about this word, I thought I would start by posting 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 on my mirror in my bathroom. These verses have always frustrated me because it seems so impossible to live up to all those characteristics. For example, I have the verse memorized, and I was thinking yesterday morning how I still can t manage to practice up to the first comma. Love is patient. The good part is that there is always a but God. We all know that God is love. I can easily say, God is patient with me. God is kind to me. He definitely doesn t envy me. He doesn t have to boast or be proud I mean He s God! He doesn t dishonor people. In fact, He gives us more honor than we deserve and calls us His children of the King. He isn t self seeking He lets us choose whether we love Him and follow Him. He isn t easily angered with me and I am thankful for that! He keeps no record of wrongs, again, so thankful! I think I bring up old records of wrongs sometimes, and I feel like God just kind of says, Really? Bringing that up again? I already forgot about it Caroline! He doesn t delight in evil, and we know that He is truth itself and Satan is the father of lies. He always protects me. Even when I ask for things and think I am being punished when it doesn t work out. So many times I see it was Him protecting me. He trusts us with reaching out to people and with the earth. He always has hope for me. And last but not least, God always perseveres. He never gives up on me. Wow! do I feel loved and cherished! Hopefully you do too! In His Hands, Caroline Hare 4 What is a God Moment? God Moments are those moments that we can see and feel God s presence in a special and/or profound way. God is with us 24-7 but sadly many God Moments go unnoticed by us. Sometimes they knock us upside the head or heart when we are not even looking for them. But most of the time we need to position ourselves by looking for them and opening our hearts and minds to avail ourselves to those moments. Rev. Suzanne Pruitt

A much sought after speaker and respected author, Brian has focused his ministry on the church in the postmodern culture. Recognized as the elder statesman of what has been called the emerging church movement, Brian is a bridge builder an orthodox Christian who believes that the faith must be practiced with a generous missional spirit. Brian will be a guest at Trinity on Sunday, March 25 and will be speaking on the topic of A New Kind of Christianity: Ten Questions that Are Transforming the Faith. He will speak in morning worship services as well as an evening session. The event will be hosted and made possible by the Harry Elliott Family. Are you a friend or a loved one of someone who struggles with faith as she longs for a child? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, we invite you to join us. Hannah s Friends is a group of women who struggle with issues of infertility just as Hannah did in the Bible. Our small group shares fellowship, prayer and Bible study as we try to discern the unique path that God has for each of us. Seven seniors took tools, canning jars, clothes and magazines to USMP on February 1. They were given a tour of the mission, then shopped in one their Thrift Stores. The Thrift Store provides income for employees at USMP. The mission has another store nearby that provides free clothing to those in need. UPSM maintains a food pantry on site. They stock and maintain a food pantry where the recipients get to shop for food, based on need. United Methodist Center for Senior Citizens ROCK-A-THON - Feb. 25 Rock-a-thon is a group of folks gathered together to rock in rocking chairs for donations to benefit fragile and frail adults.
