Nathan Carden JULY 5 - ATTENDANCE 980 Total Worship Attendance 563 Traditional 257 Contact 160 SOS Youth Mission 317 Sunday School Attendance Our student ministry is in Memphis, Tennessee, this week, working to repair homes in the impoverished Binghampton neighborhood. This work was started by a local United Methodist Church many years ago, when they adopted the neighborhood they found themselves in and made a covenant to make a difference right where they were planted. Now, decades later, they have not only improved the standard of living for many residents of Memphis poorest neighborhood, they have also transformed the lives of countless volunteers who have served Christ in Memphis. It s a powerful example of what can happen when the church decides to be Body of Christ right where they are. In some ways, the issues of our community are harder to diagnose than those of Binghampton, at least on the surface. We can certainly drive a few miles from the church and find homes that need repair, or bellies that need to be fed, and I m grateful for the servants among us who are constantly finding ways to partner with the poor. Jesus told his disciples, You will always have the poor with you, and I have long thought he was assuming the faithful would always be in relationship with the least of these. That said, it s easier to repair a roof than to mend a broken heart, just as it s easier to recognize a dilapidated house than a dying marriage, and I m afraid many of our neighbors excel at disguising their suffering. Mission and ministry are more than providing band-aids for basic needs. We must never turn a blind eye to the plight of the economically poor, but we also must humbly admit that economic status does not ensure the good life. One church I know of, that does a great deal of work with addicts, grounds their ministry in the belief that all of us are in recovery from something. Even those of us that can put up a good front are fighting a great battle somewhere in our lives, and the church s eternal calling is to stand with all people in those struggles, whether those struggles are food scarcity or functional alcoholism. It s been several years since everyone was walking around with WWJD bracelets, but I am still fond of pondering the question: What would Jesus do? If Jesus were to parachute into our town today, what would grab his attention? What would break his heart? What would he call us to do, and what would he tell us to stop doing? As we continue our Revival series, I am mindful that one of the keys to Wesley s missional movement was his insistence that both personal piety and social service are essentials to Christian discipleship. As we seek to do God s will in the world, may we be known as a church set on fire by the Spirit to do whatever it takes to heal the brokenhearted, bind up the sick, and proclaim justice for all God s children. 6 MISSION & OUTREACH SPOTLIGHT: Family Promise of Birmingham Family Promise of Birmingham (previously Birmingham Hospitality Network) aims to bring shelter, meals, and support services to families without homes. Trinity is on a rotation along with 14 other local congregation, and hosts families for 1 week approximately every 3 months. Get Involved! Through their annual fundraiser (see details below) AND the next time we host families (the week of August 30) by preparing meals, eating dinner with the families, spending the night at Trinity, tutoring, facilitating parenting classes, etc. Consider being a part of this ministry.
