This coming Sunday, we will finish up our series on superheroes, which has been really fun for me to preach. There is power in the stories we tell they shape us just as we shape them. The comic book craze that began in the 30s with characters like Superman, who had flawless morals and no inner struggle and no weakness other than Kryptonite, gave way to the 60s, with characters like Spiderman, Iron Man, and the Thing: characters who had incredible powers, but weren t always sure how to use them, didn t know how to run their personal lives, and seemed constantly in a state of crisis themselves. In the same way, while figures like Moses and Joshua, who led the Israelite exodus for two generations, were in many ways seen as almost flawless characters. Their faith was unquestioned, their relationship to God was strong, and their ability to lead, once called by God, was almost beyond belief. Moses turned his staff into a snake, he turned a river to blood, he split an ocean so that his people could escape the Egyptian army. Joshua led a ragtag group of Israelites to overtake a fortress of a city by blaring trumpets and suddenly having the walls of the city crumble. But once the Israelites reach the object of their goal (namely the occupation of the Promised Land), the people don t know what to do. Or maybe it s better to say that they forgot what they should do. I find it striking that at the point in American history back in the 30s and 40s when we were fighting to become a superpower, when so much of the country was united in the struggle against evil and oppression in the first two world wars, two Jewish kids created a superhero based on the characters of Moses and Jesus, and named him Superman. Even the spaceship he arrived on looked like the basket that had saved Moses from the Pharaoh as a child, and his father was named Jor-El, El being the Hebrew name for God the Father. The original names of Superman s earthly parents were Mary and Joseph. There was an idealism then, a clear cut line that seemed to form between good and evil, and so our heroes were perfectly good. And then, at the point in our history when we achieved our goals, so to speak, we started to forget who we were again, and our heroes got more complex in the comics. They showed their flaws, almost seeming more human than hero most of the time. The heroes changed with the times, and the times perhaps changed as a result of the heroes. Our stories matter, because in so many ways they tell us who we are, and who we hope to be. To live a grand life, you must believe in a grand story. As we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus Christ this Sunday, I hope you will join me in telling the story that matters most the story of God s grace. Grace and peace, Brian WELCOME TO TRINITY Our mission is to Gather people to Christ, Grow people in Christ, Go to serve Christ in the world and Glorify Christ. 6 Next Steps Trinity s track for guests and new members held every Sunday at 10 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Join us! 6 9:30 am Contemporary Worship 11:00 am Traditional Worship Howdy! I wanted to give you a Trinity West Homewood update. The past several weeks have been exciting and we have been blessed to have baptisms (three so far!), several new members join, and a community of world-changers energized about loving like Christ in West Homewood. We have been in a series this Spring called Peacemakers through Pentecost. If we are truly Easter people then what kind of effect should Christ s resurrection bring in our lives? Peace. We ve formed life groups during the series to talk about this difficult work and have 60 people who have committed to eight different groups. Here are a few ways we are trying to spread Christ s peace: Our Project Serve has made 40 dozen cookies for Kairos, packed kits for the homeless, and learned about simple ways to love our neighbors. We ve offered childcare for single parents who may not have the money to hire a babysitter. To me, the most exciting thing we ve done is welcome an incredible number of guests to worship from around the community who have never been there before. There is still much to do and we d love for you to join us. We have contemporary worship at 9:30am and traditional worship at 11am. I hope you ll come be a part of what God is doing in West Homewood!
