2 SUNDAY, MARCH10, 2013 FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary The 8:45 AM worship service is broadcast via 15-minute delay from 9-10 AM Sundays on WAPI-1070 AM & FM SERMON Dr. Andrew Wolfe Series: Final Words From the Cross My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me? MUSIC 8:45 AM Men s Chorus, Men s Quartet 11:00 AM Sanctuary Choir, Men s Quartet MINISTER ON CALL Andrew Wolfe, WESLEY HALL 11:15 AM Rev. Nathan Carden Series: Did Jesus Have to Die? Moral Influence Dear Trinity Members, Just last week I received a phone call from a United Methodist Church in Paris, TX. The pastor was looking for some ideas how their local church might become more involved in outreach into their community. I had never met this pastor or heard of their church so I politely asked why they called Trinity. The pastor confessed that they had a Methodist acquaintance in Alabama who had shared information about Trinity s widespread outreach and mission programs as an example of what the Body of Christ, the Church, should be doing in the world. As we continue our Lenten journey, it is my hope for our church that this story will serve to affirm the work we have and are doing, and spur us on to continue serving others in the name of Jesus. The word Lent in its most recent translation from the Old English means Spring. And traditionally, Lent has included three spiritual activities: prayer, as justice towards God; fasting, as justice towards self; and almsgiving, as justice towards neighbor. How appropriate that the practice of sharing with others coincides with the resurrection of Jesus! After all, if Jesus was raised from the dead, then his followers ought to share the grace of God, seeking tocultivate new life in a broken world. Our goal for our Lenten offering this year is to raise $40,000 to continue our work among the poor here in Birmingham. Please take a moment to read some of the ways we have used last year s Lenten offering to help others. Will you include as a part of your Lenten spiritual practices a prayer that God will give you the wisdom and strength to do your part? May we learn to give away that grace which has been given to us, that we who are the Body of Christ, may be risen indeed! In Grace and Peace LENTEN OFFERING l A LOOK AT MARCH 3 1,406 Worship Attendance 876 Sunday School Attendance Nathan Carden Minister of Outreach information for guests & new members Welcome to Trinity United Methodist Church! 3 lenten worship and sermon series FINAL WORDS FROM THE CROSS A couple of years back on the popular TV game show, Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, after contestants gave their answers, they were asked, Is that your final answer? There was an invitation to pause and consider before the answer was given that decided whether the contestants won or lost. Last words are important words. Like a closing statement, they offer the opportunity to sum up, to make a final argument or statement, to put into perspective, or to leave a legacy. So it is with the last words that Jesus spoke from the cross. These words were spoken in agony and have much to tell us about the heart and message of Jesus. They are, in a sense, his last will and testament to us. Sundays 8:45 & 11:00 AM Sanctuary Dr. Andy Wolfe TRADITIONAL WORSHIP FINAL WORDS FROM THE CROSS SERIES March 10 March 17 March 24 My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me? I Thirst It Is Finished...Into Your Hands I Commit My Spirit DID JESUS HAVE TO DIE? At the center of the Christian faith is a cross, the symbol of the Roman execution of Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God. With the cross we adorn our sanctuaries and homes, necklaces and keychains, engraved upon tombstones or even seared as a tattoo upon our bodies. For Christians, it is the sign of our salvation. But why are we promised new life out of Jesus death? Couldn t God have simply forgiven us? Did Jesus HAVE to die? For the six Sundays of Lent, Contact worship will reflect upon the various historical understandings of why Jesus died and how it becomes life giving for us. HOLY WEEK MARCH NOON SERVICES Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday These half hour lunchtime services at Noon on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week provide a convenient worship opportunity.
