3 Discipleship Just as the Galatian church was slipping back into the rituals of the Jewish religious system, Christians today add parameters around Scripture that hinder them and that Christ never intended. What can we learn from this book? How can we apply them in our world? Develop your spiritual growth in a small comfortable environment with caring people. We learn about God and each other together. 5 Mission & Outreach San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission The San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission provides individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness with hope, belonging, safety and endless opportunities to succeed in life. Their approach is built on a family success model that combines effective relief services including food, shelter and clothing with services that empower. They are the first organization that provides mobile showers to their chronically homeless neighbors. We at NUMC have been cooking and serving dinner to the SFVRM every second Tuesday of the month. We collect donations of much needed items for them every third Sunday of the month. A bin will be provided in the Narthex for dropping the items or you can drop them off at the office. The list of the items needed will be found on the board in the Narthex or at the office. Your generosity is much appreciated. Lulu Emery The United Methodist Seminar Program on National and International Affairs Mike Easterly & Amybeth Lake are exploring the possibility of organizing a group from the church and other nearby churches to attend the United Methodist Seminar Program in New York or Washington D.C. It is something that the global board of Church & Society and United Methodist Women have created to support the work of people in the United Methodist Church. Do you know that the Methodist Church has a building in Washington, D.C. right near the Supreme Court of the United States? Do you also know that the United Methodist Women own a building right near the United Nations Building? Is this something that you may be interested in in 2019? If so, we will be setting up an interest meeting after January 1, There we will discuss and plan how we would be able to accomplish this. Please contact Mike and Amybeth through the Church Office. Mission Trip to the UMCOR Depot West

6 Primetimers Los Angeles Zoo - Saturday, October 20. Cost is $ 40 per person for the ticket and bus. Meet the bus at 10:00 AM in the parking lot near the YAC. Eight places are available to have lunch at the zoo. They also have a Hop On - Hop Off bus available for an extra $2.50, Expect to return about 3:00 PM. Sign up in the office or Fellowship Hall. Save the Dates - Revised February - Lunch in Fellowship Hall with geriatric pharmacist May - San Fernando Mission August - Museum of Printing November - Merle Norman Antique Cars and furniture SCAM UPDATE Social Security Card Scam The social security administration is in the process of mailing out new social security cards to seniors. These cards are free and contain a combination of letter and numbers (rather than your social security number on the old cards). Scammers are at work calling seniors to let them know they can help them get their cards for a fee or to ask for financial information. The social security administration will never call you. Just hang up if you get a call like this. The only thing you need to do is after getting your new card is destroy (or put away in a secure place) your old one. Timeshare Scam If you are trying to sell your timeshare weeks here are some suggestion: Ask the resort first, know the market, expect little. Put down the phone. If you have advertised your week for sale expect to be inundated by calls to tell you they have a buyer and all you need to do is send a processing fee. Do not under any circumstance send money to someone who has called to "help" you get rid of your timeshare. Letter with blackmail threat The latest scam is that you receive a letter stating that the person has damaging information about you that they will send to your family and friends that will destroy your reputation if you don't pay them the blackmail - in bit coin. Take the letter and envelope to your local police station (Devonshire Division Etiwanda just at the corner by Devonshire). Prayers Romila Devendra, Sue Fritsche, Jerry Silvey, Barbara Clark, Kyle Catterlin, Christine Coons, Bud Shampanore, Delora Bloomingdale, Don Miller

7 Fellowship October Movie Night On October 8, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. in the Kendall Building, Church and Society will screen "Coco," an animated movie based on the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday. The story follows a 12 year-old boy who is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead, where he seeks the help of his great-great-grandfather to help return him to his family in the land of the living. The movie warmly celebrates the strength of family and is a loving tribute to Mexican culture. In 2017, the movie won two Academy Awards, one for Best Animated Feature, and another for best song, "Remember Me." This film has a 105 minute running time and is rated PG. CROP Hunger Walk CROP Hunger Walk is set for Sunday, November 4. Barbara Shields will be in the Fellowship Hall after October 1st to sign up sponsors. We also need volunteers to help with registration, setting up walk signs, having a water table/station for the walkers and we will be having a young children's (Tot) walk before the event. Registration will be at 12:30 p.m., the Tot Walk will start at 1:20 and the Walk itself will start at 1:30 p.m. Children's Christmas Mart - The Children's Christmas Mart is scheduled for December 15 at North Valley Caring Services. 8 Spotlight on Seniors CHARLES AND MARTHA MORTENSEN Mankind has been relying on pillars to hold up structures for eons, and pillars come in all sizes, shapes and makeup. If Pastor Joseph looks out over the pulpit on the far right hand side of our church about three rows up; week after week, he will see two pillars of our church family in Charles and Martha Mortensen. Lifelong Methodists they came to NUMC from St. John s following their son, Chuck, a year before Mark Ulrickson became pastor. Married in July of 1946 after Charles military service in the European Theatre during WW II, they are the parents of two, Ann and Chuck; grandparents of 7 and great grandparents of 20! They have devoted their lives to their family and to the teaching profession. Offering and applying their talents to NUMC in many ways; Charles served on the Membership Committee for many years and also wrote articles for The Methodist while Martha used her UCLA Art Major knowledge and talent to become a valuable asset to UMW, especially involved in the Spring and Fall Boutiques. They still volunteer as Communion Servers and Greeters. Charles is also a proud member of an elite Boy Scout group: The Eagle Scout Award was earned at Van Nuys Methodist Church. Asked about a prayer answered, Martha quickly said prayer helped calm their fears and anxiety when daughter Ann s measles turned to encephalitis and she was hospitalized in serious condition. Martha s favorite bible passage is Psalm 121, I will lift my eyes onto the hills from whence comes my help... Charles leans on Philippians 4:8, Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are pure... Their 72 year marriage (July 18, 2018) stands strong and certainly a model relationship of love, respect and caring for all of us to emulate. I was honored to share some time with them and having them share their stories and insights with me. Peggy Walters, Chair of Senior Ministries
