2 FIRST HOLY COMMUNION ON REFORMATION SUNDAY On Sunday, October 26, we will be welcoming our fifth graders to Holy. Come that Sunday and celebrate the gift of the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation that we receive in Holy. Rejoice as several of our young members are reminded of the promises that were made to them when they were baptized and clearly hear for the first time that Christ s body and blood is given and shed for each one of them. This is a great way to remember Reformation Sunday! BIBLE PRESENTATION The Christian Education Activation Team decided that it was vital to help parents live out the promise of sharing the Word of God with their children. We know that a child needs several Bibles as their language skills grow and they mature in their faith. So on Sunday, October 5, we will be presenting Spark Bibles to our third graders and the Lutheran Study Bible to our sixth graders. We hope you are there to celebrate with them as they receive the gift of the Holy Scriptures that Sunday during worship! STEWARDSHIP This year our Stewardship focus will take place during the seasons of Advent and Christmas. Keep your eyes open for the ways that will help you see all God s gifts to you during these seasons of remembering God s greatest gift, Jesus. Then, like the wisemen, we will present our responses of thanks and praise on Epiphany, January 4, FIRLU HAS HEARD -that thanks go to all who helped with Rally Recreation day - worship in our Park, lunch, games, and fellowship - it was an enjoyable day! -that First Lutheran Church has joined the Adopt-a- Hydrant program sponsored by the Greensburg Fire Department! Our personal hydrant is located on the south east corner of Main and Third Streets. -that our Preschool is grateful to everyone who took green frogs and blue monkeys from the School Bus. We are so thankful for the much needed supplies and monetary donations. Back to School is always a fun time at First Lutheran Preschool. Thank you and God Bless you! -that best wishes are extended to Melissa Desimone and Brian Rizzo who will be married on October 4. -that Continental Breakfast is available in the fellowship hall between services. Grab some coffee, tea, juice, yogurt, or pastries and join us. If you would like to help, speak to Sue Boggs or call the church office. -that the Java Table will be open October 26 between worship services. Fair Trade coffees, teas, and chocolate will be available for purchase. -that assistance is greatly needed the third Thursday of the month by 8:00 a.m. to unload the truck and sort groceries for Food Pantry distribution. Come lend a hand if you are able! -that Angel Food cakes (home baked or purchased) are needed the first Sunday of every month for Meals on Wheels. Bring your cake to the church office. CONGREGATIONAL MEETINGS, NOVEMBER 2 AND 16 Brief congregational meetings will follow worship services on November 2nd and 16th for the purpose of nominating and electing congregation council members. On Nov. 2nd nominations will be received. Balloting and /or elections will follow two weeks later at the Sunday, Nov. 16th meeting. WALK FOR HUNGER The annual Greensburg CROP walk will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26. CROP is Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. All of the money raised goes to help feed the hungry, with both direct gifts and programs to help long term poverty issues around the globe through Church World Service. The walk starts and finishes in the Kaufman Pavilion at Lynch Field and will follow the Five Star Trail from Lynch Field to Huff Avenue in South Greensburg and return. Registration starts at 1:30 PM and the walk begins at 2:00 PM. Contact Pastor Marleen for a pledge form or more information. This is a great way to share Christ s love with people in need around the world! DATES FOR YOUR CALENDARS! GREENSBURG HOLIDAY PARADE We will be giving away hot dogs and hot chocolate again this year during the Greensburg Holiday Parade. The parade will be on Saturday, November 22. We will start preparing at 10 AM and will need helping hands from 10 AM until 2:30 PM that afternoon! Join us to remind Greensburg that God s love and grace are always free with these small gifts! CHRISTMAS CAROLING All ages are invited to come Christmas Caroling with us to the shutins on Sunday, December 21 after the second worship service. We will have a light lunch and then go and spread Christmas cheer to many who cannot get out of their homes to celebrate Christmas!

All ages are welcome to join us on Sunday, October 19 to see a Sunday Matinee movie in the church. We will gather to watch the movie at 3:00 PM and then enjoy a pizza dinner together. Come out and enjoy fellowship and a free movie with us! Friends are always welcome. The Fantastic Gifts of Fall by Dandi Daley Mackall - Autumn leaves turning color, pumpkins besides doorsteps and family gathered around the table for Thanksgiving are just some of the wonders celebrated in The Fantastic Gifts of Fall, the first book of a new seasonal four book series by Dandi Daley Mackall. Bible Crafts 2 With this second book of simple, quick-to-make Bible crafts for children, step back in time to experience life in Bible times. Each Bible-based activity comes with: a complete list of materials; indication of age group and time required; step-by-step instructions; simple Bible application; and a Bible verse. Celery Night Fever (DVD) - A VeggieTales lesson in Forgiveness Veggie pals Laura Carrot and Junior Asparagus have a big job to do save their beloved Celery Park from being destroyed! Laura and Junior plan a fundraising concert with the formerly famous Groovy Brothers, but the bandmates refuse to play together because of an old grudge. All hope of saving the park seems lost until the group remembers that God forgives without question, so why can t they do the same? Will the band reunite to save Celery Park? Find out in this fun, music-filled VeggieTales adventure. APPLYING FOR AND PAYING FOR COLLEGE Are you in High School and overwhelmed with questions about college? Are you a parent who is trying to figure out how to navigate all the information about college? If so, come and join us on Sunday, October 19 for a discussion about college financial aid and admissions. We are blessed with a member who knows the process since she works in admissions at a local college and is happy to share helpful hints with you. Join us at 3:00 PM for this important discussion, and stay after for a pizza dinner and fellowship. Bring your questions, worries, and experiences. (Younger youth are encouraged to come the same day and join us for the movie!) DO YOU KNOW WHO is the newest published author at First Lutheran? He sits in the balcony with his wife and a daughter since the other daughter has gone off to college. His book, Parenting with Soul, will be a best seller before Christmas. Seriously, Jay Krunszyinsky serves as the Chief Administrative Officer for Girl Scouts of America. Jay has worked with adults, children, parents, and families in various therapeutic roles and systems of care. We are blessed to have such a caring child care professional in our congregation. The book shares many tools to skillfully guide you through those tough years with love, hope and joy rather than fear.

5 OCTOBER LIBRARY NEWS New in First Lutheran Church Library this month: Training Camp by Jon Gordon Training Camp follows the story of Martin Jones, an undrafted rookie trying to make it in the NFL.
