SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE BEGINS JUNE 2 JUNE 2013 Beginning the first Sunday in June, the Summer Worship Schedule will begin, with worship at 8:15 and 10:00 a.m. The earlier second service provides for a cooler sanctuary as well as greater flexibility in Sunday family planning. There will be no Sunday Church School during the summer months. SCS will resume September 8th with Rally Recreation Day. Continental Breakfast will be discontinued until September as well. So...don t forget starting June 2...worship at 8:15 and 10:00 a.m.! Elevator and Hearing Assistance Available

2 SIX FROM FIRST ATTENDING SYNOD ASSEMBLY The synodical expression of the church will meet in assembly June at California University of Pennsylvania with six from First attending, including Jeanne Christensen, Rick Druschel, Bob Errett, Joan Orr, Pastor Marleen and Pastor Jerry. Please remember our delegates in prayer as they engage in ministry with others from our synod. JOIN US FOR A CONCERT AND HOT DOG FEAST IN FIRST LUTHERAN PARK WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12 6:00 P.M. Eagles Wings, a 50 member teen choir from Our Saviour s Lutheran Church of Naperville, Illinois, will be giving a concert in our park on June 12 th (in the sanctuary if it rains). They will be stopping at First Lutheran on their way back home from a mission and concert trip to New York City. Full of lively and inspiring music, their concert will, as Isaiah says, lift you on the wings of an eagle. All ages are encouraged to come to the concert, and to plan on having supper on the lawn at our Hot Dog Feast (Hot Dog, Chips, dessert.free will offering). Bring a blanket or lawn chair. Let s pack our park for its inaugural event! -that thanks also go to First s choirs for their contributions to our worship and music ministries. Thanks to Marvin Huls for his leadership as we make a joyful noise to the Lord! -that Dave Mickley, Robin Seibel and others will be bicycling 300 miles from West Newton, PA to Washington DC from August 5th to the 9th. Their journey is to raise funds for use here in Westmoreland County while highlighting the mission of the American Red Cross and what it does for our community. If you are interested in joining them or helping to support this worthwhile cause visit or call Dave at that the sympathy of the congregation is extended to the family and friends of Tillie Cavanaugh as they and we grieve her death. May God s promise provide comfort and hope. -that the sacrament of Holy Baptism was given to Aubrey Elyse Hensley, daughter of Amber and Michael AND to Maria Catherine Gacek, daughter of Jaime and Anthony AND to Alaina Catherine Mains, daughter of Amy and Jonathan. We rejoice in God s gift of new birth. -that our Social Ministry committee is collecting nonperishable food in June for our Food Pantry. Please place your donations in the specially marked box in the education building foyer. Your gifts are greatly appreciated! -that registrations are now being accepted for the term of the First Lutheran Preschool. Classes are offered for children ages 3 and 4. Please speak to Barb Krunszyinsky or call the church office for more information. -that Angel Food cakes (home baked or purchased) are needed the first Sunday of every month for Meals on Wheels. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:12 Just as it is vital that we remember that our congregation is made up of many members and each one is very important in our life together, it is also central that we begin to remember that the whole church is made up of many congregations. When we pray for the Church, we pray for our congregation, churches in our synod, churches in the whole ELCA and churches in other denominations and around the world. We are part of the Southwestern PA Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) was organized in 1988 as the union of three other church bodies. The way we are organized, the church has three expressions: churchwide (our national offices in Chicago, IL along with the nationwide ministries), synods, and local congregations. Currently there are about 10,300 congregations in the ELCA and 65 synods. Every year our synod gathers in assembly to make decisions and to share our opinions churchwide. If you are interested in attending a synod assembly in the future, let me know because we need voting members every year. Every other year, the ELCA gathers in assembly. This years churchwide assembly will be held in Pittsburgh. There are still volunteer opportunities to help make this year s assembly successful. Voting members to the churchwide assembly come from elections at synod assemblies. Your voice is heard through your representatives to the synod assemblies, so if you ever have items to bring to assembly, talk with your voting members or come and join us at future assemblies. Please pray for your church. Pray for our congregation certainly, but do not forget to keep the synod and the churchwide expressions of the church in your prayers as well. All of our leaders need the guidance of the Holy Spirit to move where God calls us to be. Rejoice that you are part of the Body of Christ! To all the members of the Body of Christ at First Lutheran! VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Mark your calendars now for Vacation Bible School to be held the week of July 8th 12th from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. VBS is open to students ages 4 through fifth grade. Older youth are encouraged to come and help our younger members learn about their faith that week. This year s theme is KINGDOM ROCK: WHERE KIDS STAND STRONG FOR GOD!. It is a medieval theme with daily Bible lessons, games, songs, and snacks. Please encourage your child to attend. 5 JUNE LIBRARY NEWS First Lutheran s library is located on the second floor of the Education building. Our library includes a great selection of materials for everyone in your family, including books, DVD s and a wonderful children s library. All church members are encouraged to borrow materials from our library. Suggestions for new books and DVD s are always welcome. Just a reminder, if you or any of your young readers have any books or DVD s due to be returned to the library, please return them. While you are there, check out some of the new books and DVD s which have been added to the library for your summer reading/viewing enjoyment. New this month: HOPE When Life Hurts Most (DVD) Life isn t easy. We experience problems and setbacks every day. But during the hardest parts of life, when the bottom seems to fall out, where do we turn for peace? Although God doesn t offer any easy solutions, He does offer Himself and His cross as an anchor of hope no matter what we face in life. More than simply enduring suffering, the hope we find in Him allows us to leverage our darkest moments for His fame. When life hurts most, the world listens most intently to our message, allowing us to broadcast through our pain the goodness of the One who loves us the most. Part 1: The Anchor of Hope and Part 2: The Megaphone of Hope GRACECARD (DVD) After police officer, Mac McDonald loses his son in an accident, years of bitterness and pain erode his love for his family and leave him angry with God and everyone else. Can Mac and his new patrol partner, Sgt. Sam Wright, somehow join forces to help one another when it s impossible to look past their differences? FIRST LUTHERAN YOUTH NEWS VISITING WITH OUR YOUTH MEMBERS The schedules of today s youth make it very difficult to get large groups together very often. However, our youth definitely need to be part of our ministry at First Lutheran Church. This year Pastor Marleen hopes to visit with most of our high school youth throughout the year. So let her know when you and your family are available to visit! (She will be calling and texting you as well!) Home visits allow your pastor to know you better and to be able to minister to you more effectively. Visits to support youth in activities that are important in their lives are also of great value to remind our youth that God is with them in daily life. So Pastor Marleen is thrilled to get invited to see our members play sports, perform at concerts, participate in school plays or community activities. Even though she cannot attend all the great events, she hopes to get to see most of our youth throughout this coming year. Just remember in September and October, Pastor Marleen will not be available a new baby will be taking up most of her time. But the summer and the rest of the school year will provide many opportunities for us to visit together! WASHINGTON DC AND MISSION ON THE MON Time is running out to join us for the road trip to Washington DC and Mission on the Mon. The DC trip will include visits to the museums and education about poverty in the DC area. Mission on the Mon is a weeklong servant event in July.
