2 Partners in Faith Do you remember that feeling you had on the first day of a new school year? Starting a new job? Moving into a new neighborhood? Most people have a case of the nerves and have felt a little apprehensive about the new experience. Did someone make the experience better for you? Did he/she say hello or invite you to join him/her for lunch? It is the people who made the difference in these new situations and made us feel welcomed. A new ministry is being started here at First Lutheran called Partners in Faith. Romans 1:11-12 state 11 For I am longing to see you so that I may share with you some spiritual gift to strengthen you 12 or rather so that we may be mutually encouraged by each other s faith, both yours and mine. Through this ministry, current members will be matched with new members. Through various activities, the Partners in Faith will get to know one another and grow in the faith together. This fall, a meeting of all Partners in Faith members will be scheduled where more information about this ministry will be explained. Please contact Teresa Graziotto, Bob Errett, Kathy Acita, or Gwen Irwin if you would like more information at this time. If you are interested in being a part of this new and exciting ministry of Partners in Faith, please contact the church office. FIRLU HAS HEARD -that Vacation Bible School was a huge success. WOMEN OF THE ELCA NEWS My grandmother would always say, "Well it is the Fourth of July, you might as well say the summer is over." And as I have grown up, I find that that statement is not far from the truth. I am composing this for the August newsletter already! Hopefully your summer has been a good one and will continue through August. The Executive Board has been busy preparing for the upcoming year. We are praying that you will find the time to participate and come to know us. As per the bulletin announcements, remember to return your completed registration form and check for the WELCA fall retreat at Lutherlyn by Monday August 4th. Thank you. There will be a general meeting on September 24th. We are hoping to have it in the church pavilion, weather permitting. We will have deserts and a program after a short business meeting. Please mark your calendars and watch for more details to follow. Two other meetings/programs are tentatively planned for March and June - information will be posted later in the year. We will also have an informational booklet printed by September. Please feel free to take one when they are completed to have for your use. The Executive Board will meet on August 12 at 1:00 at the church. Looking forward to the new year of opportunities! 5 Serving At First In August 2014 AUGUST LIBRARY NEWS First Lutheran Library is located on the second floor of the Christian education building. Our library provides materials for members of any age group, with many topics to choose from and a separate children s library. New in our library this month: Twelve Ordinary Men: How the Master Shaped His Disciples for Greatness, and What He Wants to Do with You by John MacArthur Contrary to popular belief, we do not have to be perfect to do God s work. Look no further than the twelve disciples whose many weakness are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Jesus chose ordinary men fisherman, tax collectors, political zealots - and turned their weaknesses into strength, producing greatness from utter uselessness. MacArthur draws principles from Christ s careful hands on training of the original twelve disciples for today s modern disciple you. The Empty Chair by Susan J. Zonnebelt-Smeenge, R.N and Robert C. De Vries, D. Min.,P.H. D Whether you ve lost a spouse, parent, friend or sibling, The Empty Chair invites you to journey through grief toward lifegiving healing. You ll learn how to incorporate new traditions on special days such as anniversaries and birthdays, create memorials that honor and affirm your loved one s life, rebuild your individual sense of identity, and more. Most of all, you ll discover a new sense of joy that can become a special part of future holidays. Son of God (DVD) The larger-than-life story of the New Testament from Jesus humble birth through his teachings, crucifixion and resurrection gets its own motion picture treatment! Told with the scope and scale of an action epic, it features powerful performances, exotic locales, dazzling visual effects, and a rich orchestral score from Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer. continued... 8/3 8/10 8/17 8/24 8/31 Drew Erdman Julia Gogol Tyler Crosby Sue Boggs Shirley Huls Dennis Acita Al Danilko Betty Mehan Nathan Flory Suzy Flory 8:15 USHERS Dwight Miller -chief Jeff Barnhart Mary Caldwell Nick Nicassio Tanner DeTesta ACOLYTES Jennifer McCanna Laura Miller Sawyer Rehak LECTORS Drew Erdman Julia Gogol Tanner DeTesta Lauren Nicassio Mark Barnhart Sherry Menz Drew Erdman Helen Marie Flinner 10:00 USHERS -chief Elinor Giovannini Amy Schultz John Syner AV MINISTRY TEAM Dwight Miller Bailey DeTesta Delivery Liz Rowe Gretchen Jack Nick Nicassio Gabrielle & Jordan Beaken Jean Miller Sunshine Keiser Betty Mohney Cheryl Lucas Betty Kraus ASSISTING MINISTERS Rocco Marusko Rebecca Brunetta ALTAR GUILD Dianna Marusko -Coordinator Sue Cobb Marsha Danilko Pat Yost

Over these years as the world has been turned up-side down with change, this church has striven to speak and live the changeless Gospel with clarity and relevance. Celebrating the grace of God through all these past years, it is now our turn to discern the world around us and continue the mission that Jesus has given us to be: his arms, his feet, his ears, his eyes, his heart, his mouth, and his hands in this generation.
