Happiness is jeopardized when our lives become hectic and out of control. The pope uses the image of a quiet pool of water and urges us to move with kindness and humility, a calmness in life. In trying to cultivate calmness in life, it is important for us to understand that life is not governed so much by what happens to us as it is by how we react to disruptive influences. One way to maintain calmness no matter what is happening is to establish a deep spiritual life. When we are centered on God, what happens on the surface of our lives may ruffle us a little, but it will not disturb our deep inner peace. In what ways can you cultivate peacefulness in your life? Advent Festival Sunday, December 3, 2017 ~ 6:30-8:30pm See our dynamic nativity exhibition featuring dozens of intricate scenes depicting the world into which Jesus was born! Create an Advent Wreath ~ Play family games ~ Make Blessing Bags ~ Enjoy hot chocolate, cookies and more!!!! Admission is free but we invite you to bring a nativity themed ornament to be included with our Christmas gift bags for our sister parish St. Benedicts Old Columbia Road, Fulton, MD 20759

4 Our Annual Christmas Drive Our Annual Christmas drive begins November 18 th. Donations will help needy families from St. Benedict s Parish and local Howard County schools. Please stop by St. John s Hall and pick up a tag or purchase a grocery gift card and make a child s Christmas special this year. Young Adult Evening Prayer Join us for a special evening with young adults from around the Archdiocese. All participants are invited to bring their favorite Christmas cookies to share. Contact Becki if you re interested so that we can arrange carpools. All gifts and grocery cards are due no later than December 3. YOUTH MINISTRY GRADES 6 12 Contact Becki Kaman Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries youthminister@instrumentofpeace.org Faith Formation Service Project Elementary, AYM and Family Programs We will be creating toiletry boxes for those served by Msgr. Fitzgerald and the Apostleship of the Sea. We will be collecting the following items: Snack size candy Notepads Pens, pencils Toothbrushes Hand sanitizers Lip balm, nail clippers Combs, brushes Socks, gloves, hats Deodorant Trail mix, gum, snacks Playing cards Address books Travel size toothpaste Shampoos, conditioners Hand lotion, Q-tips Shaving cream, soap Disposable razors Scarves, pocket tissues News, sports, and celebrity news magazines, as well as large shoe boxes are also needed. Items should be dropped off in the bin in St. John s Hall by December 5 as boxes are being packed on December 17. Calling All High Schoolers! Upcoming AYM High Sessions December 3 Advent Festival 6:30-8:30 December 10 All I Want for Christmas December 17 Service Night Sessions are 6:30-8:00 pm. All high school youth are welcome!

5 Faith Formation Family Home Program Have Fun! Serve Others! Build Community! Does all of that sound like a good time? Come join your peers for Young Neighbors in Action this summer! YNIA is open to all young people currently in grades This year our group will be going to: San Diego, CA on July Estimated cost is about $1160, which covers all expenses for the week. Many fundraising opportunities available. Applications and more can be found on the bulletin board or website and should be turned in with a $50 deposit by November 26; after that registration will be accepted on a space available basis. Pastoral Care Visits Raising Saints: A Parents & Tots Group of St. Louis and St. Francis Parishes Meets every first and third Thursday of the month from 10-11:30 am in the nursery at St. Francis. Anyone interested in enjoying the fellowship of other Catholic parents and children is encouraged to come. To stay up to date on all group events, sign up for Flocknote updates and join the Raising Saints Facebook group. Our next meeting is December 7 th. Seeking parishioners that would like to make visits to local assisted living facilities to provide a service with communion.
