Mission Echo Page 2 Musings From The President Linda DuRant I am writing this on the day that we switched from Daylight Savings time to Standard time. At church this morning my Pastor s Sermon centered on time. As human beings, we are always concerned with time... whether or not we will be on time or late in going to an event, how much time it will take to do something, how much time is left in the game, etc. We constantly ask what time is it? But, the better question is not What time is it? Instead we should ask; What am I doing with my time? We each have a certain span of time allotted to our lifespan. Are we using it to fulfill our purpose as United Methodist Women? Are we using the days of our lives to glorify God and to bring about His Kingdom? One of the installation services for United Methodist Women Officers puts it this way: If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400 and carried no balance, but every evening canceled whatever part of that amount you had failed to use during the day, what would you do? Daily draw out every cent, of course! Well, you do have such a bank and its name is "Time." Every day you are credited with 86,400 seconds; and every night, the Bank of Time rules off that day as spent, it can not be re-lived again. I understand that we all have demands on our time...family, work, volunteer organizations, social obligations, and the list goes on and on. But when we join the United Methodist Church we pledge to support it with our time, our talents, our gifts, our service and our witness. When we choose to become members of United Methodist Women, we agree to make a pledge to mission and to support the purpose: The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. This is not always easy. Very often we have to toss away old concepts and to step boldly out. We are called to be the arms, hand, legs and feet of Jesus Christ in this world and sometimes, we are called to be his backbone as well. The United Methodist Women Program book for is entitled A Calling For This Time. The introduction states: The calling to Christ s mission is for each one of us. You and I have a calling; we have a PURPOSE. Our devotion to God moves us to acts of mercy and justice. God is at work all around us: Let us look at the role God wants us to play so that the work of mission can be accomplished. The program book will help you explore the callings of women from the Bible and present you with many opportunities to engage in mission with women, children and youth. The purpose of the programs is to refresh your relationship with God and empower you to go forward and take action. Would you like to invite more women to be part of this mission journey? Consider Ways to Promote the Programs in the following pages. Use these ideas and your own to invite a friend or two to the program. I hope that each of you will take the time to look at the Program book and to seriously consider how you are spending your time as a United Methodist Woman. It is too important a task to let slide. We are a strong arm for mission for Women, Children and Youth in this country and around the world and no one of us can do it alone. I look forward to working and playing and doing mission with each of you in the coming year. Grace and Peace for the Journey! Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Mission Echo Page 3 Education & Interpretation Susan H. Jones SPECIAL MEMORIES OF 2013 Praises to you, South Carolina United Methodist Women, for 2013 has been a generous, spirit-filled year for our Missions! Your contributions to our Conference Love Offerings, Craft Room items and Sales, Gift Cards, New and Used Stamps at our Conference Annual Meeting speaks to your dedication to our Missions. Your love gifts for women, children and youth throughout the year have been deeply appreciated by the recipients of your giving. Your belief in the words of John Wesley, Warmed hearts require helping hands, exemplifies your commitment for service to others. This past summer the Craft Room was a buzz of happy shoppers interested in that special find. The result was a whopping $2, shared equally among our five Missions. To you a special thank you for your continued interest in, support of, and abundant generosity, for our Craft Room that functions purely for the purpose of helping Christ s women, children and youth in South Carolina. To YOU on behalf of the Conference Committee for Education and Interpretation, I thank you for the way you joined with us in giving from the heart simply for the pure joy of serving others. To God be all the glory. As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, we are reminded of God s love and abundant grace given to us. I wish you a blessed, caring Christmas full of family activities and the true meaning of this season, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Grace and Peace, Susan H. Jones, Chair ( )SCCUMW Education and Interpretation Committee it s all about missions part ii I wish to thank you for the wonderful opportunity to serve the South Carolina Conference of United Methodist Women during these past four years as Chair of the Conference Education and Interpretation Committee. It has been an enriching experience to be part of an organization that seeks to promote our purpose so faithfully. Our purpose defines who we are, we are committed to it and bound by it. I am reminded of the words of a prominent writer Mike Slaughter. If we are uniquely equipped as we follow Jesus Christ, how much similar or different should we expect our vision to be when we compare it with the visions of those around us? How can we live our lives in such a way that when others see us, they will also see Christ? How can we ever expect to become more like Christ without ever acting like him? What about your life says Disciple or Christian to those all around you? How willing have you been to make sacrifices for the benefit of others in need? How willing are we to find, Christ, in the least of these and to also realize that we, too, are the least of these? Do these statements make you think of our purpose and how we live up to the requirements of it and our commitment to missions? They should for that is what took place during our business meeting Saturday morning at our Conference Annual Meeting. We celebrated our Missions and each Mission Director. What a special, meaningful, dedication it was for our five Directors, to be so recognized by this Conference for their love, Commitment, and service with Christ s women, children and youth truly touched the hearts of everyone. From the presentation of the Big Checks, designed by Tina Waters, our Conference Communications Coordinator, to the individual Special Recognition Pin presentations with personal glimpses of how each Director serves her Mission, we know each felt how much we love them and how we truly appreciate all that they do for Christ s women, children and youth. During those special moments and in that caring environment, we were united as a team and our faces showed our feelings of pride and commitment to them and to our purpose. And so another year begins. What happens in the future depends on all of us. To honor our Purpose and Missions, we all must move forward with faith, hope, and love. With these words of commitment to Christ our hearts are warmed, our hands choose to serve, and His people will be fed. Thanks be to God.

Mission Echo Page 4 The Vice President s Corner Marlene Spencer Greetings to each of you! What a fall this has been. We have been blessed with wonderful weather, beautiful colors, inspiring Annual Meetings and in knowing that With God, Nothing is Impossible. You have once again been richly blessed by our Annual Meeting held on October at Bethel UMC in Spartanburg, SC. The hospitality shown by the Bethel UMW and the Spartanburg District UMW was phenomenal. I want to take a moment to thank them for all their hard work in hosting the meeting. Also I want to thank you for attending your District Annual Meetings, the Conference Annual Meeting, and for supporting United Methodist Women s vision and commitment to being in mission. Your participation in the programming that United Methodist Women offers is amazing! I have received many s and correspondences commending the annual meeting planning committee for the blessings they received from our worship leader, bible study leader, workshops, music and from our Bishop. What a blessing it is to be able to be among so many of our United Methodist Women and to know how much they are being blessed by our leaders. Thank you for taking your time to attend annual meeting. The attendance this year was just over 400 UMW and we were blessed by each other's presence. We had a wonderful District Officer Training Event at Grace UMC in Columbia on November 9. Kudos to the Grace United Methodist Women for their willingness to do everything we asked of them. It was a joy to work with them. We were blessed to have as our speaker Bessie Geiger, Executive Director of Columbia Bethlehem Community Center. Bessie s deep commitment and passion for the youth and children at the center is overwhelming. As we look forward to 2014 there is much to anticipate. I pray blessings for you and your families and prayers for you and your local units to be surrounded by God s blessings and bounty in the coming year. Upcoming events include Legislative Day, the 2014 Assembly in Louisville, Kentucky, Spiritual Growth Retreat, Come Together, Be Together, Mission u, and our Annual Meeting next fall. I look forward to 2014 and the opportunities God will place before us as United Methodist Women. The following names were omitted from the 2013 Memorial Pages Hartsville District - Lyttleton St. UMC - Bernice "Stokes" Smith and Nell Stein.

Mission Echo Page 13 A Note from the Treasurer Maureen Thomas Praise the Lord! We are almost at the end of another year of service. God has truly blessed this conference with dedicated, committed and generous women. The call is sent out and you respond in mighty, mighty ways. At our Executive Committee meeting in October I reported to the team that we are 67% of our Pledge to Mission for It is my firmest belief that we can make it 100%. If you have done all you can do, we and the children, youth and women we serve say Thank You and may God bless you! However, as you prepare for the holidays look deep within and ask yourself is there something more I can give? There is some mother who can barely make ends meet and her holiday looks bleak. There is a child longing for someone to be a mentor. There is a teenager in trouble with no safe place to land. Your generosity can and does make a difference. As has been said we make Mission Possible. Let s make the South Carolina Conference of United Methodist Women a member of the Mission Possible 100 Club. Have a Merry Christmas and a Bountiful New Year!!

Mission Echo Page 14 Mission u Youth Event My name is Savana Becker, I attend Grace United Methodist Church, and I am part of the youth. This is my second year going to the United Methodist Women s youth retreat. I hope I will be able to attend many more. Every time I go, I learn more and more. All of the girls that attend are very nice, and we get together and work very hard to accomplish our mission. It makes me feel good to do God s work by helping other children in a different country. When I went to the mission workshop, I learned a lot about the country Haiti. We made pillow case dresses for little girls. I thought those poor kids do not have it easy. Those children can t just go shopping. We take having nice clothes and having plenty of everything for granted, until we look back and think about the poor children in Haiti. By doing this mission, it is leading me in the right path on doing what God wants me to do. I look forward to one day being able to help those that cannot hear about Jesus and teach them to trust in Him. Contribute to United Methodist Women s Living Time Line We invite you to tell the story of the United Methodist Women member in your life who has instilled in you the hope, determination and drive to Make It Happen for others. Submission details: Send in a photo of the woman you are honoring. Videos should be about two minutes long. Artwork can symbolic or realistic. Written expression may be a letter, poem or essay.
