2 President Marlene Spencer Fill my Cup, Let it Overflow Fill my Cup, Let it Overflow The medley to this song, Fill My Cup, Lord has resonated with me since being at Lake Junaluska for the 2015 Spiritual Life Retreat. This year s retreat was spirit filled, spiritually motivating and spiritually uplifting. South Carolina United Methodist Women were blessed to have as our retreat leader, Yvette Richards, President, United Methodist Women national, who led us with the theme, Fill My Cup, Lord with Faith, Hope and Love. Yvette challenged each of us in attendance to go back to our homes and local units and be BOLD, COURAGEOUS, UNREASONABLE WOMEN; to walk in FAITH; to have HOPE for the future; and to know that God s LOVE is everlasting and overflowing. The music from our song leader, Elizabeth Nance- Coker and musician, Rev. Ann Hoyt was inspirational as well. Our cups were indeed filled with Faith, Hope and Love. The weather at the Lake was absolutely beautiful as 568 ladies attended the two sessions. We thank you, Yvette for leading our conference. We started our year with a rescheduled Legislative Event, Am I My Sister s Keeper, due to inclement weather. Even with the date change, we were excited that so many women took the time out of their busy schedules to come and share about an issue that affects so many women, children and youth Domestic Violence. The legislative event welcomed women of all faiths who were there to learn about issues and advocate on public policy because of their faithful commitment to justice. Ms. Becky Callaham, Executive Director of Safe Harbor, Greenville, SC was the keynote speaker. Our ladies were asked to be in contact with their legislators about new criminal domestic violence legislation. Our week of Mission Week of Service went well and we thank you for your participation. In just a few short weeks, we will be at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Taylors, SC for our fun day, Come Together, Be Together. This year our mission emphasis will be Elder Baskets. We ve solicited the help of our Limitless Team to come and collect and assemble the baskets which will support the SCUMC Native American Elder Baskets Mission Project. Come, dressed in your fun hats and any flower accessory you choose for a wonderful day of fun and giving! This is an exciting time for our organization as we continue to grow in our purpose by fostering spiritual growth, developing leaders and being advocates for justice. In 2019, we will celebrate 150 years of mission work. During the next four-five years leading up to that we will be preparing for the next 150 years through our gifts to the Legacy Fund endowment which will lay the financial foundation for future generations of United Methodist Women. As more information is shared about this event, we invite you to come and be a part of our history; to share your stories and be intentional mentors so others are empowered by Christ s love through United Methodist Women. Celebrate the dedication and foresight of our foremothers in mission as we lead up to our 150th anniversary in As we move into the last half of the year, many exciting events have been planned for you by your conference event chairs and I hope to see many of you at some of them. Please mark your calendars and make a special effort to be a part of South Carolina United Methodist Women. Continue to share your excitement about the great things happening and invite others to join you in this exciting organization. My prayer, as your president, is that you will not only attend these events but bring others with you. We look forward to bigger and better things happening as we reach out to others through our missions to women, children and youth throughout the entire world. Peace and Grace to you, Marlene Spencer, President

3 Education & Interpretation Sue Owens MISSIONS R US Before I go any further, let me thank each of you who participated in the Great Day of Sharing on May 5, Bethlehem Center, Spartanburg, Columbia Bethlehem Community Center, Killlingsworth, and Rural Mission, Inc., are appreciative of all donations that were made that day. Jams and jellies sure are yummy!!! Other canned and baked goods are appreciated as well. Knitted and crocheted items, hand-sewn pieces, novelty items all are appreciated. Get started now!! July will be here before you know it! As you will remember, proceeds from sales will be split among our five mission projects. 10 Membership Nurture & Outreach Gladys Lemon The MN&O s throughout the Conference have been working hard, burning the midnight oil counting all the members of SCCUMW. What an awesome task! I applaud all the district MN&O s for making the phone calls, adding the numbers together and turning it in so South Carolina can be counted. This membership count is important to SCCUMW because it shows the National UMW that we are putting love in action by supporting all the local and national projects that help women and children. When you receive this issue of Mission Echo, the Come Together Be Together event for this year will be history. The keynote speaker, Freida Stobel, the exciting workshops, and assembling of the Elder Baskets will have come and gone. The MN&O Committee would like to thank all who came and brought their flower hats, scarves, pins, etc., and items for the Elder Baskets. If you missed all the fun this year, make preparations now to attend the CTBT event in 2016, tentatively planned for Chapin UMC. SCCUMW you either experienced or missed an awesome Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska held the first days of May. When we came down from the mountain our cups were filled with Faith, Hope and Love. As your membership chair I was thrilled to see four young ladies who accompanied their mothers, aunts or grandmothers to the retreat. I applaud the women who look for opportunities to involve the young women in their churches by bringing them to UMW events. What better way to get them interested than by awarding them scholarships to attend these events and become a mentor to them. My mother-in-law, taught her Baptist raised daughter-in-law all about the UMW and took me with her to events, such as the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska and the then named School of Christian Mission. I fell in love with the organization, its mission outreach and the fellowship of the women from all over the state. I have been involved with it ever since. I thank her to this day for all she taught me. Our Limitless Team is looking for new members and welcome all at our table. We want to rebuild, renew reinvigorate and add to the SCCUMW s Limitless Team. Please encourage your young women to join or form their own UMW circles and make a difference in the lives of all of God s children, especially women, children and youth.

Contact information for resource materials UMW PO Box Atlanta, GA Columbia Bethlehem Community Center cbccommunitycenter@gmail.com Bessie T. Geiger who has served the Columbia Bethlehem Community Center since summer 2011 remains a valuable member of our staff. Bessie began serving the Bethlehem Center as interim Executive Coordinator in January 2013 after the unexpected resignation of the previous coordinator. During her time in this position she represented the center by participating in several speaking engagements before UMW units and at Conference UMW gatherings. She served as spokesperson on behalf of the center at churches for special programs and activities highlighting the center s work as one of the 13 Advance Special Ministries of the United Methodist Church. While the Executive Coordinator was charged with carrying out some duties of an Executive Director, the position concentrated more on coordinating programs and activities for the center. The position has been crucial in helping to return the center to a degree of stability over the past few years. The board of directors recognized the need to move the center to the next level. The board agreed that having an executive director, as well as an executive assistant, would push the center forward to its next accomplishments. Mrs. Geiger, as executive assistant, now focuses her attention on the office administrative duties as well as working alongside the executive director helping to implement programs and activities. To speak with Mrs. Geiger about volunteer opportunities or enrolling your children or grandchildren in our upcoming camps and activities, call (803) Columbia Bethlehem Community Center welcomes Whitney D. Chisholm as the new executive director effective January Whitney is no stranger to the Bethlehem Center; she became a member of the board in 2013 and quickly began to share her desire to be more directly involved in activities of the center beyond the time in board meetings. Over the past 15 months, as the center has begun to move in a much anticipated direction, the board was keenly aware that it needed to look at adding another permanent member. The Board recognized the need for strong skills in public relations, salesmanship, long-term planning and grants research. With this in mind, the board of directors voted during fourth quarter 2014 to hire Whitney as executive director. She began work in the position on January 12, Whitney is a 2010 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in public relations. Her work experience has included event planning with Thomas Media Group, marketing project manager with CSC and most recently program director with United Way of the Midlands. This part-time position is a great fit as she is a full-time student currently pursuing a doctor of pharmacy.

Antoinette Balfour will resume full time duties as Program Director. She has done an outstanding job as Interim Director while keeping all programs running. With this amazing team in place, we look to great things at WFLC. Keep them and the Center in your prayers. It was approved at the March Board meeting that we will set up a scholarship fund for summer camp. If you are interested in being a part of this you may contact the Center. 14 Spiritual Growth Coordinator Evelyn Pauling The theme for the 2015 South Carolina Conference Spiritual Growth Retreat was "Fill My Cup Lord With Faith, Hope and Love." This was illustrated by the presence of tea cups, crosses, and bibles that decorated the stage. As usual, the beauty of Lake Junaluska and its peaceful atmosphere revealed God's masterful creativeness. It provide a visual scene to enhance the spiritual moment. Our keynote speaker, Yvette Richards, did an amazing job with setting the tone and essence for this year s event. She conveyed to an audience of 564 plus ladies what living with faith, hope and love looks like once God has filled our cups. Her inspiring and encouraging message was magnified with the melody of music and songs. Nevertheless, the musician and song leader aided in lifting every voice in reverence to our Lord. Individually souls were healed and blessed. Special guests included key note speaker Yvette Richards (United Methodist Women National President, from Kansas City, Missouri), the musician (Rev. Ann Hoyt, retired pastor), the song leader (Elizabeth Nance- Coker, Minister of Music at Grace United Methodist Church, Columbia SC), and the Communion Celebrant (Rev. Amy Cole, Smoky Mountain District Superintendent). Their dynamic talents joined and radiated throughout Stuart Auditorium. May God continue to use these ladies to win souls to His Kingdom. You did an amazing job as servants for the Lord. A big thank you goes out to the ladies who supported the 2015 South Carolina United Methodist Women Spiritual Growth retreat! Thanks for traveling across the Carolinas. Your smiles, hugs and kind words of appreciation were graciously received. You all were a wonderful audience! May God continue to bless you. The SCCUMW Spiritual Growth Committee consisted of very hard working positive women who allowed God to guide and use their talent for His glory. Thanks to those who worked tirelessly to ensure success. God has truly answered our prayers as we concluded another victorious year at the lake. The combination of your individual talents and gifts presented an amazing conference. I thank God for each of you and all that you do to encourage spiritual growth. In addition, I would like to thank Dr. John Ewing, Executive Directive of Lake Junaluska, LuAnn Davis, Event Coordinator, Debbie Knight, Mark and other staff who worked very hard to have things in order for the SCCUMW.
