2 FROM THE PASTOR S OFFICE: St. Michael & All Angels Angels continue to be in! There are angel clubs, angel publications, angel books, angel mail order catalogues, angel figurines, plates, paintings, prints and ornaments. Some say they have seen angels, white robed, winged figures hovering on gentle wings. Some are not so sure they even exist. However the bible speaks of angels and the church celebrates their contributions. This month we commemorate St. Michael and All the Angels. On that festival day, September 29th, the church ponders the richness and variety of God s created order and our limited knowledge of it all. Scripture speaks of angels, a word that in both Hebrew and Greek means messengers, who worship God in heaven. In both testaments angels speak for God on earth, and they are remembered most vividly as they appear to the shepherds and announce the birth of the Savior. Michael is an angel whose name appears in Daniel as the heavenly being who leads the faithful dead to God s throne on the day of resurrection. In Revelation, Michael fights in a cosmic battle against Satan. For angels, neither their appearance nor their power is their most important attribute The most important thing about angels is the message that they bear from God. They are simple messengers. The fact that the word appears right in the center of the word evangelism tells us that our mission as witnesses to the gospel makes us angels too. By virtue of your Baptism, you have a message from God for all the world. We are loved and beloved, we are forgiven, claimed and sent, for the sake of the world. Louis Nuechterlein, writes of visiting a cathedral in Ulm, Germany in which a sculpture of Michael hangs above the nave on the inside rear wall of the cathedral. I remember how greatly impressed we both were by this gigantic visual aid. It almost seemed to be shouting down to us as we were leaving the building: Now remember this! As you go back out into the world again, you are not alone. Nor are you helpless. God is with you. His Son who died for you lives and rules. His spirit, given to you by your baptism, lives in your heart. And lest you forget, I, Michael, defeated the evil one who keeps trying to get you to be unfaithful to your Lord. Take heart! The future belongs to God, and to you, his children. The message of the Festival of St. Michael and All Angels is twofold. First of all, we are assured that God is still God and will remain God forever. The poetic image of angels in heaven defeating all that opposes God is not unlike the current idea of envisioning health and wholeness when we are beset by illness and disease. The vision in the scripture not only inspires us, but it also strengthens us here and now. The second part of the message is that all of us are called to be angels on earth, to be messengers of God. To be an angel does not require wings or halos or even moral perfection. All it takes to be an angel is a message from God. And that we have. Our assignment is to be angels to those who are in physical or spiritual need, to those who have no hope or are afraid to hope, and to those who do not know or realized the magnitude of God's love for all that God has made. Go forth this month with a message of hope, love, grace... share good news with those around you. Continued Joy!! Pastor Karen + 2

3 Congregational Care STEPHEN MINISTRIES: How We Can Best Pray for Our Hurting Friends - Sarah Stephenson God Moves through the Prayers of His People by: Dave Furman It's definitely helpful to pray for your hurting friends. One step further would be this: Rather than just tell them you re praying for them which is, of course, a good thing pray aloud for them in their presence. If your hurting friend has a prayer request, just stop what you re doing right there, even at a restaurant or at a church service or on the phone with them, and pray for God s healing and grace in their life. It s incredibly encouraging for the hurting to hear others pray for them. Read scripture with them and pray back God s promises for them. I ve also had people in our church me the contents of their prayers for me. I m so encouraged when I open up my from Erin or Julie or Sue it s a joy to know that people are praying for me. It s also helpful to remind your hurting friends that God does indeed move through the prayers of his people. Remind them of God s power in prayer. This is how he s sovereignly chosen to work through his people. He s ordained the prayers of his people to be the conduit of his action in the world. If you or someone you know could benefit from one-on-one prayer, please contact the Stephen Ministry team. stephenmin@unitedlutheranbv.org or by calling the church office at (479) SEPTEMBER MEETING 3:30PM STEPHEN MINISTRY SUNDAY 9/16 3

4 ULC NURSES: THE PROS ON PROTEINS What is protein? Proteins are the building blocks of life. Protein is vital to our health and crucial to all of your body functions. Consider protein the fuel you need to keep all your body parts running. Every cell in the human body contains protein. You need protein for everyday life to help you repair your body cells and make new ones. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein. Protein is important for growth and development in children, teens, and pregnant women. Protein foods are broken down into parts called amino acids during digestion. The human body needs a number of amino acids during digestion. The human body needs a number of amino acids in large enough amounts to maintain good health. The protein can be found in a variety of food. There is no hard and fast way to measure your required protein intake except by your calorie intake, weight, and age. The recommended daily allowance changes with age; this can vary according to your health concerns. Animal sources of protein tend to deliver most of the proteins. Eating healthy proteins like fish, chicken, & beans. Vegetarians need to eat a variety of food containing protein. 5 Education Announcement ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION UPDATES STARTING SEPTEMBER 9TH! INTRODUCING THE NEW TESTAMENT by Mark Allan Powell Using a text book entitled, Introducing the New Testament: A Historical, Literary, and Theological Survey by Mark Allan Powell, former professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. Pastor Fred Nelson (and others) will serve as the guide for the journey that will include the 27 books of the New Testament - from Matthew through Revelation. Pastor Nelson spent some quality time with Dr. Powell many years ago and was inspired by many of Dr. Powell s insights. Dr. Craig Koester of Luther Seminary has said of Dr. Powell s book: This splendid introduction to the New Testament is vivid, engaging, and designed to reach a broad audience. Its clear and accessible style invites contemporary readers into the biblical world, while the colorful graphics catch the eye and stimulate the imagination. Historical, literary, and theological questions are addressed in ways that invite readers to venture further into the scriptures. As a resource for teachers and students, it is excellent. Pastor Nelson will have sessions on Sundays after worship service and also on Tuesdays at 6:30pm. PLEASE SIGN UP IN THE NARTHEX AND SPECIFY IF YOU WILL ATTEND THE SUNDAY OR TUESDAY SESSION. BIBLE STUDY SERIES: THE USE & MEANS OF GRACE SEPTEMBER 12TH & SEPTEMBER 8:00AM At the heart of what we believe as Lutheran Christians is Word and Sacrament. The Use and Means of Grace statement was adopted for guidance and Practice of Word and Sacrament in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America at the 1997 Churchwide Assembly. Come explore what we believe, our theological principles and how we strive to put them into practice in our life together. ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION - AT HOME ON YOUR OWN If you d like a copy of Matthew J. Marohl s Book of Faith Study resource on Romans, please take one from the counter in the Narthex. Paul's letter to the Romans is very different than any of his other letters. Paul addresses many of the important questions that arise when one considers the relationship between God and creation, as well as topics such as salvation and grace. 5

Jonas knows how to work a crowd and a con, but his works of wonder are done with mirrors and smoke. When his tour bus breaks down, Jonas pitches his tent in impoverished Rustwater, Kansas. While his alluring manager (Debra Winger) tries to persuade the local sheriff (Liam Neeson) not to close the show, Jonas sets his sights on a beautiful skeptic named Marva (Lolita Davidovich). But making a believer out of Marva is going to take a real miracle. *popcorn provided* 7

8 Parish Fellowship UPCOMING EVENTS BOOK STUDY with PASTOR KAREN Book Club will be SEPTEMBER 24th at 6:30PM September Book: Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life Richard Rohr From the books cover: In Falling Upward, Fr. Richard Rohr seeks to help readers understand the tasks of the two halves of life and to show them that those who have fallen, failed, or "gone down" are the only ones who understand "up." Most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the whole thesis of this book is exactly the opposite. What looks like falling down can largely be experienced as "falling upward." In fact, it is not a loss but somehow actually a gain, as we have all seen with elders who have come to their fullness. October Book: Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again Rachel Held Evans When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered changed her and it will change you too. Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. The Bible, she discovers, is not a static work but is a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God s loving and redemptive work in the world. November Book: Loving Jesus Mark Allan Powell The essence of spirituality is loving God, says Powell. The Bible, the Talmud, and the Qu'ran all direct their followers not merely to believe in God, to trust God, to obey God, and to serve God - but to love God. Can we learn to love God? In this biblical spirituality for today, Powell's earnest plea is for Christians to revisit their faith not by blazing in religious enthusiasm but by harboring a steadier flame and deeper commitment. Living at the poetic heart of faith, he argues, entails seeing the coordinates of religious life in a new way. Powell espouses the old-fashioned idea of piety. Drawing on his wide knowledge of the Bible and Christian tradition, as well as insights from his own journey, he shows how simple religious practices move us beyond the old certitudes of a naïve and youthful faith into the less certain but more bracing terrain of a second naïveté, a closer walk with Jesus. 8

9 Parish Fellowship UPCOMING EVENTS Announcing Art n Luther 3 Did you know that when you see food and drink in many renaissance paintings they were purposefully placed there for their symbolic biblical meanings? Since the bible was the most common book in Europe, artists used the bible to encode messages that could be read (or inferred) by their audience. If you have yet to experience one of our Art n Luther painting parties, consider joining with us this fall as we once again take a brief jaunt through renaissance art. This time we hope to work on a simple still life with a seasonal theme featuring pumpkins (or gourds). Now what might be the symbolic meaning of a gourd? See the fourth chapter of the book of Jonah to help with that answer. Remember, we do paint, but it s a party too. So come prepared to listen to some good music, and eat some tasty finger foods as well as painting a picture that you eventually take home. The canvas is provided, and we have the brushes, paint and some not too complicated directions ready for you. When? Friday October 5th, 2018 at 6 pm Where? At United Lutheran Church Price? $10 covers canvas and the incidental supplies you will need. We encourage you to bring a guest as well, so the second canvas is only $5. (Please sign up for each participant on separate lines so we can be sure that everyone has a canvas.) See the Art n Luther 3 sign up sheet in the narthex and make any checks payable to United Lutheran Church. See Jeremy Fowler-Lindemulder, Kristi Tostenrud, or Pastor for details. 9

If you ever wondered what we do with the tabs we collect, please read about the Ronald McDonald House at Mercy Hospital. We have given them thousands of tabs over the years in support of the work they do. Don t forget to keep bringing in any tabs you can to help us help others. - Dee Sadenwasser The mission of the Ronald McDonald House is to create, find, and support programs that improve the health and well-being of children in Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. One of the ways we accomplish this is by providing a home away from home for ill or injured children and their families at the Ronald McDonald Family Room, located at Mercy hospital in Rogers, AR. Here we are able to care for the patient s family, allowing them to remain nearby while their child recovers. We provide snacks and drinks, shower and laundry facilities and a variety of relaxing and entertainment choices for families to enjoy. We also provide overnight lodging so that the families can remain together until their child is discharged. All of this is available at no cost to the families thanks to our generous supporters. 12

13 Stewardship MANAGING GOD S ABUNDANCE September - Empathy Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep Romans 12:15 Jesus sums up the Godly way of life as loving God with all that we are, loving one another and loving our neighbors as ourselves. Loving others as ourselves is the heart of empathy. Seeing the suffering of someone and making that suffering our own weeping with those who weep that is empathy. Seeing someone transformed by joy, and joining them in that joy rejoicing with those who rejoice that too is empathy. Empathy breaks through our dividing differences. It allows us to see others as one of us. No longer does the label stranger apply. It takes work to expand beyond our natural empathy circles groups close to us like family, friends, and our own ethnic communities. Developing and expanding our empathy doesn t just happen. It takes courage and effort to grow in understanding by showing up in places with people we do not know and learning from and with them. It can be uncomfortable and awkward, but it also can be delightful and surprising. Either way, be warned you might see the world in new ways. It is in expanding and deepening empathy that we are better able to follow God s command to love our neighbors as ourselves. How might you grow in empathy this month? How might you engage with a neighbor who has a different perspective? 13

21 Prayer Corner "And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,"Says the Lord Almighty. - II Corinthians 6:18 How would you respond if the richest man in the world wanted to adopt you as his child? Promising that if you ask for anything in his name, it would be given you. Who is the richest man? Of course, it is God. So, why don t we jump at the chance to be his child? It s never too late to take that leap of faith into God s love. Submitted by - Ruth Dronen 21

22 Prayer Corner Lord God almighty, we are thankful this day for our elders and our grandparents. Grandparents are cherished members of our family. They bring gifts of wisdom, experience, and love, And share with us their life of faith. We thank you for their example and ask that you bless our grandparents with long life, happiness, and health. May they remain in your constant love and be living signs of your presence to their children and grandchildren. We ask these things in your name. Amen. 22

23 Prayer Corner Creator God, who brings forth green shoots and icy frost, sunrises and sunsets, we give thanks for seeds that have grown, harvests gathered, storehouses and pantries filled, and mouths fed. We see signs of summer s passing in golden leaves, shortening days, misty mornings, & autumn glow. As your good Earth rests through winter s soon coming cold embrace, we look forward to it s re-awakening when kissed by Spring s first touch. Guide us as the winds of change blow. With every falling leaf, keep us mindful of the daily renewal we are afforded because of You. As the seasons change, your love for us never does. Keep us warm with thoughts of our blessings throughout this autumn season. Amen 23

27 The Luther500 Festival, June 16-22, 2019, is a seven-day cultural-immersion experience that brings the Reformation to life as you learn, serve, and celebrate in the places where Martin Luther did the same 500 years ago. MORE ABOUT THE LUTHER500 FESTIVAL: Luther500 Festival is a week-long experience of vacation, cultural immersion and adventure in the Land of Luther. Since 2011, the Luther500 Festival has been the best and easiest way to bring families and friends to Germany. This chance to see the Luther sites, and visit Germany in the company of friends, to experience something like family camp in Europe, to live in Wittenberg for a week, has been going on in the form of The Luther500 Festival since The program is a join venture of the musical group Lost And Found and the German tour operator Terra-Lu Travel which is owned by Michael and George's good friend Christian Utpatel who, prior to Terra-Lu was, for ten years, the national youth pastor of Germany. The program grew out of their shared desire to create an intergenerational, educational, inspirational opportunity for people from around the world to enjoy a vacation in Germany and also gain a deepened understanding of the Reformation and its impact. All are welcome. And there is plenty for everyone. The Festival is located in Wittenberg, Germany, our home-base for the week. The days are framed by brief morning and evening prayers in the historic churches in Wittenberg, and filled by a wide variety of options including Interest Centers, Day Trips, Recreation Options, Historic Exhibits and Museums, along with plenty of time for shopping, strolling, eating, exploring, conversing, relaxing and reflecting. Two meals a day are provided and lunch is generally on one's own. There is some optional evening programing with music, and group fun for all ages, and overflowing "Gemutlichkeit" after evening prayers. LEARN - SERVE - CELEBRATE Come to the Luther500 Festival to be renewed, reformed, recreated, revitalized. Come to the festival to be inspired. More information can be found at including prices, a short video, and a sample of what has been offered in the past. Pastor and Jeremy are currently planning to attend again. You can ask them about the experience. 27
