2 FROM THE PASTOR S OFFICE: Mary Magdalene, What Have You Seen? Perhaps it has occurred to you already that this year we are focusing on the saints. Their lives are sometimes celebrated as minor festival days in the church, and yet each month, regardless of any intentional celebration, they come to us in order to remind us of a gospel truth. On July 22nd we commemorate Mary Magdalene, Apostle. During the Easter season we hear: And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn (Easter preface, Evangelical Lutheran Worship Leaders Edition). Mary Magdalene does not always get top billing as she does in this passage. But during the Easter season she is appropriately listed ahead of Peter and all the other witnesses to Christ s resurrection. Mary Magdalene was there first after all (something that may have annoyed the sons of Zebedee, who both wanted to be first). She was certainly among the group that was closest to Jesus. Mary also was witness to Jesus crucifixion, burial, and his first appearance after the resurrection. Mary Magdalene s reputation has frequently been questioned. The gospel accounts, however, give no clear evidence that Mary Magdalene was a loose woman nor even the one who anointed Jesus feet. The gospel does tell us that Jesus cast out seven demons from this woman of Magdala and that she was a central character on Easter morning. She was the one who announced, I have seen the Lord. The other disciples who were there merely went back to their homes and daily lives. What have you seen? I am looking forward to seeing kids and adults alike come together to share Jesus, to experience God s grace, to sing, and laugh, and eat and enjoy the faith proclaimed in this faith community during Vacation Bible School. Rolling River Rampage is the theme with an inspirational message to... Experience the Ride of a Lifetime with God. I can t wait for July 16th; it will be a blessing to behold. I am going to say ahead of time: Many thanks to Ms. Sarah, her staff and all the participants who will share of themselves and open themselves to God s Spirit. Please pray for all those involved during the week of VBS. The question remains, what have you seen? Look back at your life and consider the miraculous things God has done for you. Look beside you and see the faces of sisters and brothers in Christ who worship and serve beside you. Then go and find someone and tell them the good news -- I have seen the Lord! Continued Joy!! Pastor Karen + 2

7 The Stephen Ministry team at ULC is here for YOU! Bear one another s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ- Galatians 6:2 Our congregation is blessed with a Stephen Ministry team of 11.and counting! That means that 11 people in this congregation are trained to listen and help you heal. Stephen Ministers are laypeople Christian men and women trained to provide one-to-one care to people experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, job loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, or separation due to military deployment. Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life. Their commonality? A passion for bringing Christ s love and care to people during a time of need. A Stephen Minister begins a caring relationship when he or she is matched with a person experiencing a life crisis. The Stephen Minister then meets with that person on a weekly basis to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. The caring relationship lasts as long as the person is in need of care. With a Stephen Ministry team available.there is no reason to hurt alone. If you are interested in receiving compassionate care from a Stephen Minister or are interested in becoming a member of our team, contact Sarah Stephenson at youth@unitedlutheranbv.org. ANNUAL PICNIC In Fellowship Hall 6:00PM 7
8 A Happy, Healthy Summer SUMMER IS HERE! Be careful and pay attention to what your body is saying to you. Be aware of dehydration signs: starting with basic dry mouth and eyes, the dry skin conditions, muscle cramps, nausea, heart palpitations, and lightheadedness. Drink your liquids- eat light, small frequent meals including salads in your diet. Consuming leafy vegetables, fruits, and summer greens are a delicious way to stay cool. They contain a significant amount of water. Avoid to much tea-coffee-caffeine drinks. Drinking green tea is good to drink. Wear loose, full sleeved cotton clothes when outside to protect your body from the sun and to aid evaporation of sweat. Get plenty of sleep. Keep your room cool, and shades pulled to help make your sleep more comfortable. Stay cool and hydrated. Drink water, at least 2-3 cups upon rising, and continue throughout the day. One glass of water 30 minutes before a meal helps with digestion. Most people need 2-3 quarts of liquid per day. Put some berries in your water, mint leaves, or lime slices. Keep up or begin an exercise program. Take time out of your busy day to get exercise at your health facility or in the fresh outdoors. Move your body especially in the morning before it heats up. When outside, protect yourself from overexposure to sunlight by wearing a hat and using natural sunscreens without excessive chemicals. Don t forget your lips. Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and both UVA and UVB protections. Enjoy Nature s bounty of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. Include some protein with 1-2 meals. Nuts, seeds, sprouted beans, soy products, yogurt, kefir, cottage cheese. Fish and poultry are good to eat. Relax and breathe. Slow your pace down a little and absorb the light that stimulates your hormonal message center. Sun teas are wonderful. Use flowers and leaves (or tea bags) in a clear half or one gallon jar with fresh water. Leave in the sun for at least 2 hours-24 hours. Deepen your spiritual awakening. Read the bible- a book- magazine. Check with your local library or book store. Plan a vacation that incorporates what you need to relax, contemplate, and breathe. Connect with others. Plan something fun with family or friends. Take time out of your busy schedule and enjoy the summer. Take a walk and relax in your surroundings. The elderly, small children, and people with chronic health conditions are more vulnerable to heat. Call and check on friends, family, and neighbors. Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. God s Blessing for your continued health. Your Parish Nurses-Charlotte Spencer & Tonja Seusy 8

14 Adult Christian Education Join the discussion, Sunday mornings at 11am, as we study our way through Paul s letter to the Romans using Matthew J. Marohl s Book of Faith Study resource. Paul's letter to the Romans is very different than any of his other letters. Paul addresses many of the important questions that arise when one considers the relationship between God and creation, as well as topics such as salvation and grace. Here are some elements explored: 1 What must I do to be saved? (Romans 3:9-31) 2 Saved by grace... isn't that too good to be true? (Romans 5:1-11) 3 If what I do doesn't save me, does it matter how I live? (Romans 6:1-23) 4 Where is God when we suffer? (Romans 8:18-39) 5 How can I keep from singing? (Romans 10:1-21) 6 What does God want from us? (Romans 12:1-21) There s room around the table for you... hope to see you there! Shop Amazon? Don t forget to smile. Amazon. com has set up a way to send a percentage of their sales to charity. I set my charity as United Lutheran Church, Bella Vista, AR. It s not a large amount, but every bit helps and I hope that more people will do the same. Here s how to do it: Instead of just going to amazon.com, go to the Amazon site of - Here you choose United. You can still use the app or your cart on amazon as usual. But, whenever you want to check out go through the smile.amazon.com site. Your cart is the same, your payments are the same, everything is the same, but they will send a little bit of money to United in support of our youth. If you have any questions, let me know. Thanks! - Jeremy Fowler-Lindemulder 14
15 JULY MOVIE NIGHT Thursday, July 6:30pm THE GREATEST SHOWMAN Orphaned, penniless but ambitious and with a mind crammed with imagination and fresh ideas, the American Phineas Taylor Barnum will always be remembered as the man with the gift to effortlessly blur the line between reality and fiction. Thirsty for innovation and hungry for success, the son of a tailor will manage to open a wax museum but will soon shift focus to the unique and peculiar, introducing extraordinary, never-seen-before live acts on the circus stage. Some will call Barnum's wide collection of oddities, a freak show; however, when the obsessed showman gambles everything on the opera singer Jenny Lind to appeal to a highbrow audience, he will somehow lose sight of the most important aspect of his life: his family. Will Barnum risk it all to be accepted? - Summary by Nick Riganas *popcorn provided* 15
16 BOOK STUDIES with PASTOR KAREN Book Club will take a break during July August Book: LAMB Christopher Moore The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years -- except Biff, the Messiah's best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in the divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work. Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more -- except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdala -- and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight. September Book: Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life Richard Rohr From the books cover: In Falling Upward, Fr. Richard Rohr seeks to help readers understand the tasks of the two halves of life and to show them that those who have fallen, failed, or "gone down" are the only ones who understand "up." Most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of life, but the whole thesis of this book is exactly the opposite. What looks like falling down can largely be experienced as "falling upward." In fact, it is not a loss but somehow actually a gain, as we have all seen with elders who have come to their fullness. October Book: Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again Rachel Held Evans One Woman s Journey Back to Loving the Bible If the Bible isn t a science book or an instruction manual, then what is it? What do people mean when they say the Bible is inspired? When Rachel Held Evans found herself asking these questions, she began a quest to better understand what the Bible is and how it is meant to be read. What she discovered changed her and it will change you too. Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of our favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, original poetry, short stories, soliloquies, and even a short screenplay. Undaunted by the Bible s most difficult passages, Evans wrestles through the process of doubting, imagining, and debating Scripture s mysteries. The Bible, she discovers, is not a static work but is a living, breathing, captivating, and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God s loving and redemptive work in the world. 16

23 Prayer Corner If you are looking for a good pattern in prayer, look no further than the Lord s Prayer. Less than half talks about our needs; the rest has to do with God. How much time do you spend praising God and reminding those around you of all he does? Submitted by - Ruth Dronen 23
24 A Prayer for the Fourth of July Lord of the nations, in your hands are all the people of this world: the prideful, the needy, the arrogant, the lost, the high, the lowly, the entitled, the dispossessed, the loved and the unloved, the blessed and the not so blessed. As a nation we give you thanks, and we seek your guidance. We give you thanks for the gift of freedom. May we learn to use our freedoms to be servants to our neighbors. We give you thanks for the call to do justice. May our own actions and the actions of our nation facilitate justice for all. Come to the aid of nations and leaders who need your guidance. Come to the aid of those standing in harm s way. Make us mindful of the sacrifices of our military and their families. Make us mindful of ways that we can support them in their service. Strengthen us in faith and calm the fears within us. God of all who are in need, heed our call and answer our prayer. Send peace in our time, peace for our hearts, peace for our land, peace for all the world, peace that abides in us as we abide in you. For you are God alone, source and ground of our being, from whom comes the only peace that endures forever and ever. Amen! (Salem Lutheran, Stillwater, Tuesday Memo) 24
