1 JOHN CALVIN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Natural Bridge Road Bridgeton, MO Call Check us out at Newsletter: Today is Thursday, October 4, 2018 MEN S SATURDAY BIBLE STUDY As you have thought about the beginnings of the church, you probably remember that the Church began in the Holy Lands and quickly spread throughout the Mediterranean area by the work of the followers of Jesus and an apostle by the name of Paul. Then you know the Church grew into Europe and continued north all the way to the British Isles. But then an Italian explorer by the name of Amerigo Vespucci, even before Christopher Columbus, sailed west and discovered a new land which would eventually bear his name - America! And so, after the Reformation in the 1500's, followers of Jesus, saw huge opportunities to travel to this new land and set up churches there. And thus began the journey of the Church and Christianity to America. That move to America brought opportunities to further divide the Church into different denominations. This Saturday, our Men's Group will look at the coming to America of the Church and why there was a sudden explosion of denominations. The group meets in the Evelyn Evans Room at 9:00. Even if you have not been part of our first two classes, you can join this Saturday October 6, and jump right into the discussion. FALL GATHERING Four women from John Calvin's PW attended the annual North Area's Fall Gathering last Saturday at John Knox Presbyterian Church on New Halls Ferry Road. There were representatives attending from over 15 churches in The Presbytery. The theme was "Learn to Do Good" taken from Isaiah 1:17...seek justice...defend the oppressed...take up the cause of the fatherless...plead the case of the widow We heard from a guest speaker about the newly opened ALL AMONG US WOMEN'S CARE CENTER in Ferguson. Each of us attended one of three workshops presented and will be reporting back to our group at the next meeting this coming Saturday October 6 at 11:30 am here at the church about our experience. All JCPC women are invited. The workshops were: An Introduction to My Faith with a guest from Dar-Aljalal Mosque Gun Violence: Movie, Trigger & Discussion led by Rev. Joy Myers Churchwide Gathering Recap from this summer's gathering in Louisville We enjoyed a lovely luncheon and worship and departed with the challenge to Go and show Love, Care & Dignity to someone that looks different from us. God is calling us into his world!! HALLOWEEN FOLLOW UP MEETING SUNDAY There will be a follow up meeting on the Haunted House part of the JCPC Halloween Festival on Sunday, October 7, immediately after worship in the Youth Room. The group will take a tour of the warehouse area and will be able to see how the rooms are laid out. THIRD QUARTER PLEDGES The 3rd quarter giving statements are available for pick up on the signup table. We have just ended compiling our church pledge giving for the third quarter. Many of those who pledged have been able to give according to or slightly above what they pledged. Some have not yet fully met their pledge. As we continue a very busy ministry in our church, it is important that our contributions continue to reflect as close to or above what we pledged almost a year ago. So please prayerfully consider where you are with your pledge giving for 2018 so we can end the fourth quarter with continued "good news" in our pledged giving. Also be aware that in a few weeks we will kickoff our 2019 pledge campaign. The work of Christ continues!

2 SUNDAY OCTOBER 7 ~ FROM PASTOR JOHN Are you a seat-sitter? A long time ago I heard this expression, "Some people watch things happen... some people make things happen... and still others sit around and wonder what's happening!" In the Gospels, often times the disciples of Jesus were just sitting around wondering what was happening. Our scripture reading for World Communion Sunday is one of those stories. The disciples were listening to Jesus and asked Jesus to give them more faith so they could be better followers. That is when Jesus responds with the infamous verbiage about having simply the faith of a grain of mustard seed. Of course we know in the days of Jesus that a mustard seed was just about the smallest seed around. Often people misunderstand what Jesus is getting at. It is not the amount of faith, but it is how well you apply that faith in your daily walk. You can have genuine, one-hundred percent perfect faith, but if you never apply it in your life; if you choose not to reflect your faith upon others; if you are nothing more than a seat-sitter, then according to the Lord, you do not need more faith, you just need to practice the faith you already have. This is a fitting reading for World Communion Sunday. This annual event held on the first Sunday in October was actually started by a Presbyterian Minister in America but has been adopted by the World Council of Churches as the one day of the year that all the different denominations and followers of Jesus come together. It is estimated that about 32% or 2.36 billion people of the world's population are followers of Jesus. That is a number that in and of itself, could change the world forever. It could wipe out poverty, eliminate hunger and famine and bring about a lasting peace that the world has never seen. But perhaps the problem in this huge majority is that many are seat-sitters. As much as we would like to dream-dreams about the world, we cannot on our own change the whole world but we can impact our own circle of contacts. We can impact our family, our friends, our neighbors, our coworkers, our classmates, we can even impact those who have rubbed us the wrong way! But we cannot do that as a seat-sitter and it is not what Jesus called us to do. So then the question is, "What did Jesus expect his followers to do?" That will be the focus of my sermon and the worship this Sunday as we take a moment to gather at Table and celebrate the oneness in Communion and the challenge to make a difference. Till we meet this Sunday - Peace be with you! FESTIVAL OF SHARING Our church has chosen to collect the requested items for the PAPER PRODUCTS PACK. These items will be collected here at JCPC and then assembled off-site and distributed throughout agencies within Missouri. The donations we collect will also help credit hours to our 10,000 Hours Program. Each pack we make is equal to $15 and for each pack we will add 1 hour to the volunteer hours. SPECIFIC ITEMS that we are asking you to donate for the PAPER PRODUCTS PACK: wrapped packages of toilet paper (must be a double-roll package of 4 rolls) wrapped roll paper towels (good quality, high absorbency) large rectangle box facial tissue (Kleenex or other good quality brand) This program is sponsored by the JCPC Presbyterian Women. The Final Collection Date is Sunday, October 7. GOLDTIMERS TO SYBERGS The Goldtimers will meet at 11:30am on Friday, October 12 for a luncheon. They are going to Sybergs on Dorsett Road. Please signup if you plan to join them. FALL FESTIVAL AT JCPC The 12th Annual Fall Festival at JCPC will be Saturday, November 3 from 8:00am 2:00pm. The cost is $25 per table and there are applications on the Signup Table. There are also promo flyers for you to share with your friends and neighbors. We need crafters and shoppers. Please help us get the word out!

3 ONE-ELEVEN WALKS MONDAYS 5:30PM Join us on our leisurely ONE-ELEVEN WALKS through our community in an effort to learn more about our neighbors and their needs. These walks will be brief and are not for teaching or converting people, but rather opportunities to observe so we are better equipped to serve. If you don t feel physically able to walk for minutes, please contact Amy Brixey to learn how you can participate in a different way. Contact Amy Brixey: bisskut27@gmail.com or WE HAVE ENTERED THE CYBERSPACE WORLD We have begun recording moments of our Sunday morning Worship and they are being posted on our Facebook page. When you look at our page, you can watch these videos and then you can share the video on your Facebook page. It appears people across the internet are interested in watching these videos and in particular the sermon. As of the middle of this week, there have been over 480 views of Pastor John's sermon from Sunday, Remembering God in a Netflix World. This is a great way to share what goes on in our church. So please begin checking out our Facebook page and then sharing the videos so we can keep getting out the word of our ministry and our time of worship. escrip PROGRAM UPDATE John Calvin Church received $77.98 from the Schnucks escrip Community Card Program during May This increases our total receipts to $10, since we started the program. This program includes both Food and Pharmacy purchases. Thank you for your continued support. Please join us for this special event on Thursday, November 1 from 12-1 at the Algonquin Golf Club (340 N. Berry Road, Glendale). The luncheon is free to attend but an RSVP is required. debra.paulus@pchas.org or THE μυριάς CHALLENGE The μυριάς challenge (μυριάς translated: a number too big and in Greek culture it is the number for 10,000) that Pastor John brought to the congregation is to commit to do 10,000 hours of helping those in need starting in September 2018 and running until August of These hours can be accomplished by individual work, work by groups within the church and/or work taken on by the entire church. There is a sheet on the signup table for people to record activities and hours they donated for that month, or you can call the church office, , and let Lisa know what you have done and how many hours you donated. Let us join together and make 10,000 no longer a number too big but rather a number that brings a great deal of happiness in our journey of faith.

4 COMMISSIONED LAY PASTOR PROGRAM As many of you know, Lisa Schoonover will be starting an internship rotation in the Lay Pastor Program on October 7. She will be in this rotation for about six months. In working with the Lay Pastor Team, JCPC was invited to host an intern and I am happy to report that Elder Donna Schiro from the St. Mark Presbyterian Church will be joining us. She has a grandson baptism this Sunday and so her first Sunday with us will be October 15. Donna submitted to us some biographical information and a current photo. Right: See photo of Donna. This is a voluntary position and she will be working with us for three Sundays per month, spending about 20 hours a month. Let us welcome her to our ministry and wish her the best of luck as she prepares to follow her call in the Lay Pastor Program. From Donna Schiro Hello, JCPC!
