2 PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN ADVOCACY: Domestic violence awareness continues to be a focus for the Justice and Peace Committee of the CCT. Take action to raise awareness of violence against women. Did you know that the United States is just one of seven United Nations member countries that have not ratified a treaty that works to end the oppression of women around the world? This agreement, called the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), addresses the major issues facing women worldwide, including human trafficking, education, employment, and economic and social standing. Visit PW s website to find links to written articles. Order new PW shirts for Orange Day through Presbyterian Distribution Service, (800) ; $28 + shipping. Information on ordering will also be available at our Spring Gathering, April 21. Fellowship of the Least Coin (2014 Grants) The Fellowship of the Least Coin (FLC) is first and foremost a prayer movement. When women pray for justice, peace and reconciliation, FLC asks that they set aside the lease coin of their country for the support of women and children around the world. The least coin is significant because women in any economic context can give equally. In more than 80 countries around the world, women are in solidarity through prayer and their least coins. Grants from funds collected regionally are distributed through the International Committee for the Fellowship of the Least Coin (ICFLC) to individual projects as well as to church conferences and organizations. Project grants and FLC Scholarship Awards totaled $289,000 throughout the world in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, North America, and the Pacific. It is truly amazing how one least coin can make such an imprint in the world Birthday Offering Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms. Isaiah 40: 1, 11a*. The Birthday Offering of Presbyterian Women, May 10, 2015, celebrates Presbyterian women s history of mission giving. Presbyterian women have a long tradition of caring for others and helping those in need. Ever since Hallie Paxson Winsborough challenged each member of the Woman s Auxiliary in 1922 to give a penny for each year of her life as a birthday gift for Miss Dowd s School for Girls in Japan, Presbyterian Women s Birthday Offering has helped fund mission projects that improve the lives of women and children around the world. While the projects and donation amounts have changed, Presbyterian Women s commitment to improving the lives of others has not. In 2015, we will offer our prayers and financial support to the Community of St. Therese of Lisieux (CSTL) (Memphis, TN) and to Bethesda Christian Community Center (Barranquilla, Columbia) with support from the sister churches of Oxford Presbyterian Church (Ohio) and Seventh Presbyterian Church (Colombia). Both groups minister to women affected by poverty and violence. CSTL leads women from prostitution, addiction and trafficking to self-reliance and wholeness in Memphis. Bethesda Christian Community Center reaches out to women in the violenceriddled El Por Fin neighborhood in Barranquilla, Colombia. The grant amount will depend on gifts contributed during The goal for the 2015 Birthday Offering is $500,000. Please promote prayerful, generous support of the Birthday Offering by giving through your PW group in your presbyteries or online at Materials for promoting and interpreting the offering are listed on the back of Horizons magazine (January/February 2015) or by visiting Presbyterian Distribution Service, 800/ or (type Birthday Offering in the search box). Your gifts make a difference!
3 Presbyterian Women of Southern Kansas announcement of By-law Change The PWSK Coordinating Team Board voted at their January 24, 2015 meeting to bring a vote to the Presbyterian Women of Southern Kansas to change Article VII of our By-laws with the following revision. This will come to a vote at our Spring Gathering on April 21, 2015 at the New Covenant Church in Hutchinson, Kansas. The change is suggested in order to retain our current treasurer in her position longer than the current term of three years to stabilize the bank account in the current location in order to eliminate the need to locate a new bank in another community of a newly elected treasurer s position. Please read the following to be voted on. Should you have questions, please contact me by phone: or ronlarson@sbcglobal.net. ARTICLE VII Section 2 Term of Office The term of office for all leaders shall be three years. No leader may repeat the same office after filling a complete term excepting members of the Leadership Resource Committee who may serve two consecutive terms. Any leader who completes an expired term may repeat in that office. Suggested new wording: The term of office for all leaders shall be three years. No leader may repeat the same office after filling a complete term except when the need arises as determined by the Coordinating Team. Members of the Leadership Resource Committee may serve two consecutive terms. Any leader who completes an expired term may repeat in that office. Attention PW Moderators If you have not sent your Local Moderator s Information Form to Nora Coryell, please do so at once. She is in the process of publishing the annual booklet to be handed out at our gathering in April. Also, I need your PW Mission Project information for the year I know many of your PW organizations have been busy so I d like to hear from everyone. Also our treasurer, Ginger Reed, is still waiting on several PW pledge forms for 2015 that were sent out in our Fall PWSK Newsletter. Please have your PW treasurer (or church) remit your form if you haven t done so already. Thank you.
