1 REMINDER TO THE CONGREGATION In the event of winter weather, Pastor John will discuss cancelling church with several Session members. A decision will be made based on several factors; however, in the past we have always wanted to side on a more conservative error so as not to put anyone at risk. This decision will be made by 8:00am on Sunday morning and if there is no worship, a listing will be placed on KSDK and an will be sent to all those on our list. In the Secret (I Want to Know You) FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Amy Brixey Exodus 12: While the Israelites were still in the land of Egypt, the LORD gave the following instructions to Moses and Aaron: 2 From now on, this month will be the first month of the year for you. 3 Announce to the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each family must choose a lamb or a young goat for a sacrifice, one animal for each household. 4 If a family is too small to eat a whole animal, let them share with another family in the neighborhood. Divide the animal according to the size of each family and how much they can eat. 5 The animal you select must be a one-year-old male, either a sheep or a goat, with no defects. 6 Take special care of this chosen animal until the evening of the fourteenth day of this first month. Then the whole assembly of the community of Israel must slaughter their lamb or young goat at twilight. 7 They are to take some of the blood and smear it on the sides and top of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the animal. 8 That same night they must roast the meat over a fire and eat it along with bitter salad greens and bread made without yeast. 9 Do not eat any of the meat raw or boiled in water. The whole animal including the head, legs, and internal organs must be roasted over a fire. 10 Do not leave any of it until the next morning. Burn whatever is not eaten before morning. 11 These are your instructions for eating this meal: Be fully dressed, wear your sandals, and carry your walking stick in your hand. Eat the meal with urgency, for this is the LORD s Passover. 12 On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike down every firstborn son and firstborn male animal in the land

2 of Egypt. I will execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt, for I am the LORD! 13 But the blood on your doorposts will serve as a sign, marking the houses where you are staying. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. This plague of death will not touch you when I strike the land of Egypt. 14 This is a day to remember. Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the LORD. This is a law for all time. ANTHEM I Sing Praises Medley MacAlmon, Gay SECOND SCRIPTURE READING Rick Kreitner Exodus 37:1-9 Next Bezalel made the Ark of acacia wood a sacred chest 45 inches long, 27 inches wide, and 27 inches high. 2 He overlaid it inside and outside with pure gold, and he ran a molding of gold all around it. 3 He cast four gold rings and attached them to its four feet, two rings on each side. 4 Then he made poles from acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. 5 He inserted the poles into the rings at the sides of the Ark to carry it. 6 Then he made the Ark s cover the place of atonement from pure gold. It was 45 inches long and 27 inches wide. 7 He made two cherubim from hammered gold and placed them on the two ends of the atonement cover. 8 He molded the cherubim on each end of the atonement cover, making it all of one piece of gold. 9 The cherubim faced each other and looked down on the atonement cover. With their wings spread above it, they protected it. Carry them out and pile them up at the place where you will camp tonight. 4 So Joshua called together the twelve men he had chosen one from each of the tribes of Israel. 5 He told them, Go into the middle of the Jordan, in front of the Ark of the LORD your God. Each of you must pick up one stone and carry it out on your shoulder twelve stones in all, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. 6 We will use these stones to build a memorial. In the future your children will ask you, What do these stones mean? 7 Then you can tell them, They remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark of the LORD s Covenant went across. These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever. 8 So the men did as Joshua had commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan River, one for each tribe, just as the LORD had told Joshua. We fill all our busy schedules with everything we want and need to do and we push you to the bottom of our list. And in these very busy times, we are guilty of forgetting all that you have done for us. So Holy God, hear our request to be forgiven. And hear our plea to find ways in our lives to remember who you are and what you continue to provide and do for us. Bless us Lord, that we may not forget about you. 3 TRUNK OR TREAT SATURDAY OCTOBER 27 Trunk or Treat is fun time for kids where people bring their cars and pass out candy from their car trunks. We need decorated cars and treat givers for the children from 7-10pm. Please decorate your car and dress in costume! FESTIVAL OF SHARING Our church has chosen to collect the requested items shown below for the PAPER PRODUCTS PACK for the Festival of Sharing. These items will be collected here at JCPC and then assembled off-site and distributed throughout agencies within Missouri. Also needed are some people to staff cars of those that have provided their car but are involved inside with other Halloween activities. Please sign up to let us know that you are able to help! Each pack we make is equal to $15 and for each pack we will add 1 hour to the volunteer hours. This report contains data to illustrate the five key factors that have been identified that affect poverty: economic and family security, education, food and nutrition, health, and housing and energy. A struggle in any one of the areas affects other parts of people's lives. 5 ONE-ELEVEN WALKS DATES TO REMEMBER FOLLOW UP MEETING FOR HAUNTED HOUSE Mondays 5:30pm September 17-October 22 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 1:11 October 2 Bible Study There will be a follow up meeting for further discussion on the Haunted House part of the JCPC Halloween Festival on Sunday, October 7, immediately after worship in the Youth Room. Join us on our leisurely ONEELEVEN WALKS through our community in an effort to learn more about our neighbors and their needs. No need for intimidation! These walks will be brief and are not for teaching or converting people, but rather opportunities to observe so we are better equipped to serve. As all of you know, we are attempting to sell the church which will necessitate relocation and so adding more items to our inventory, while we are trying to eliminate items could be counterproductive. JCPC Policy was adopted as follows: Please do not bring items to the church to just be dropped off. If you have an item(s) you wish to donate to the church, please the church office (johncalvinchurch@juno.com) with a complete description of the item(s). That will be forwarded to Pastor John who will then forward it with anonymity to the Church Property Action Team. They will review the request based upon the need for the church and will make a determination with respect to acceptance. Pastor John will then notify the individual of the Team's decision. Again, at the present time we are very restrictive about accepting donated items, other than those advertised for mission purposes. THE μυριάς CHALLENGE The μυριάς challenge (μυριάς translated: a number too big and in Greek culture it is the number for 10,000) that Pastor John brought to the congregation is to commit to do 10,000 hours of helping those in need starting in September 2018 and running until August of These hours can be accomplished by individual work, work by groups within the church and/or work taken on by the entire church. There is a sheet on the signup table for people to record activities and hours they donated for that month, or you can call the church office, , and let Lisa know what you have done and how many hours you donated. Let us join together and make 10,000 no longer a number too big but rather a number that brings a great deal of happiness in our journey of faith.

6 AN UPDATE FROM PASTOR JOHN ON THE SALE OF THE CHURCH The Session has recently voted to extend the listing on the sale of our church property through the end of the calendar year. But with that extension, the Session has examined some new movement of other properties in the area and has modified the listing agreement. You may have noticed that within the past few months, there has been much activity with the many vacant parcels along the Rock Road. Many national stores have elected to locate in our area. However, these stores are not buying the property in which they are locating, but rather they are leasing the space. This allows these national companies to save their capital. Recently a national chain known as McAlisters Deli renovated and relocated in what was once a Lone Star Restaurant. They did not purchase the property but instead entered into a long term lease. Now once the lease was in place, then the owners of the property have listed the property for sale at a price of 1.5 million. Our real-estate agent has informed us that our property would be a good location to make available a lease agreement contingent on an investor purchase of the property. So the way that works, is, our property will be marketed with these national retail stores who are looking for a lease. We have authorized our agent to seek a rental rate of $9.50 per square foot. The lease would be written contingent on the property, now with a lease, to be sold to an investor. Our agent believes that with such a lease, the return for an investor would be sufficient to purchase the building at an amount in excess of 3 million dollars. The building of course is also still listed for sale at 3.3 million. We hope this expansion of the possibilities for tenancy of our property will expedite the ultimate sale and allow us to move to a new location and expand our ministry. Please be in prayer that God will match a lessee and investor and we can move quickly in closing on the sale of our property.
