1 HARVEST MEN'S BIBLE FELLOWSHIP INDUCTIVE lesson 12 One step beyond the pinnacle is downhill. David s kindness in dealing with Mephibosheth was a beautiful picture of what Christ has done for us. Now David takes a series of steps, which will be talked about and used as an example until our Savior returns. I would like to remind you that proper observation on these chapters depends on your ability to focus on the people, places, and events that are presented here. This week we will observe the main people and their character, the events they find themselves in, and the locations where these events take place. From the outset, let me tell you that there is a lot of material to cover this week. So keep at it, and let s glean what the Lord would have us to. You will need a couple of extra pieces of paper for your notes on these chapters. Day 1 Read twice through 2 Samuel 11 and 12 to get an overview of our study this week. [ 1 ] Briefly summarize the opening scene in 2 Samuel 11:1. [ 2 ] Read 2 Samuel 11:2 5. From verses 2 5, using your observation skills (who, what, why, where, when, and how), make a list of the steps David took that led to this grave sin with Bathsheba. [ 3 ] Look up the word took in verse 4 and write below what you learn. [ 4 ] What did David do to cover up his sin in verses 6 17? [ 5 ] Read verses What words of encouragement did David give to Joab? [ 6 ] What did David do next with Bathsheba in verses 26 and 27? In the provided space, write out 2 Timothy 2:22 [01]

2 Day 2 [ 1 ] The best commentary on the Bible is the Bible itself. In verse 27 and in 2 Samuel 12:1, we read about the Lord s opinion of this sordid matter. What does the Lord say and what did He do about it? [ 2 ] Nathan begins by telling David a parable. A parable is a story that teaches a moral lesson or truth. Although it is not usually factual, a parable is a story that is true to life. It is designed to make one central point, and every detail of the parable will reinforce that main point.1 Study this parable and see if you can identify the characters in the parable with those in 2 Samuel. [ 3 ] Who is the wayfaring man in this parable? What do you learn about sin from this? [ 4 ] In 2 Samuel 12:5 12 David renders judgment on the individual in the parable. What was the judgment he declared and what was the judgment the Lord declared upon David? [ 5 ] In verse 13, David finally confesses his sin. What did the Lord do with his confession? [ 6 ] For the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). Who were the innocent ones who paid the price for this sin? In the provided space, write out 2 Timothy 2:22. [02]

3 Day 3 [ 1 ] God loves to bless His children. Once David had confessed his sin, he and Bathsheba had another son named Solomon. Where have we read about him before? [ 2 ] The beginning of our study started with a battle for the city of Rabbah, and it ends with the conclusion of the battle. Summarize below what happened. What do you learn about what God can still accomplish through a person who can confess his or her sin? [ 3 ] From your list you made on the steps that David took on his trip to sin (Day One, question 2), find a Scripture that warns or cautions against each one of the steps you identified. [ 4 ] What event initiated David s attempt to cover up his sin? In the provided space, write out 2 Timothy 2:22 Day 4 [ 1 ] What were the roadblocks the Lord was setting up before David as he continued his downward spiral? [03]

4 [ 2 ] Which of the Ten Commandments from Exodus 20 did David break with this episode in his life? [ 3 ] Using Deuteronomy 17:17 and 2 Samuel 12:9 for your answer, what was the warning to the king, and who do we ultimately sin against when we sin? [ 4 ] Make a list of the people affected by this sin in these chapters and what consequences they suffered because of it. In the provided space, write out 2 Timothy 2:22. Day 5 Today I would like you to look at Uriah the Hittite and glean as much as you can about this man. [ 1 ] What does the name Uriah mean? [ 2 ] What was he doing when this chapter began? [ 3 ] What does he tell David in verse 11, and why is this mentioned? [ 4 ] Did Uriah commit sin in this chapter? [04]

5 [ 5 ] As you contrast David and Uriah, who played the hero in this story and why? Interpretatation [ 1 ] How well did David do in covering up his sin? [ 2 ] What do you learn from this story about sin, its consequences, and about God s forgiveness? [ 3 ] What did you learn about God this week? In the provided space, write out 2 Timothy 2:22. Day 6 Application One sin, committed by one man, to be made known by all. David didn t just happen to find hemself committing adultery with a married woman, it was a series of steps that he continued in and ultimately cost him his reputation. James 1:13 15 says: Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted by God ; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away and by his own desires and enticed. Then when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. (NKJV) [05]

6 This Scripture puts the responsibility squarely on us for our part in maintaining life that is unhindered by sexual immorality. If you were to ask David as he awoke from his nap, Do you know that within a short period you will commit adultery, conceive a child in sin, lie, murder, steal and put an indelible blemish on our reputation for recorded history, he probably would have laughed at you. Yet that is exactly what he did and the Bible has recorded it all. David couldn t, nor can you, see the unintended consequences of sexual immorality. It affected every relationship that David had on earth. More importantly, it drove a wedge between him and God. You too might be on the verge of doing exactly what David did, and you think that you can get away with it. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap (NASB). What steps can you take today to stop yourself from falling as David did? A Final Exhortation: If you finish this study and find that you are lacking in the area of sexual purity, whether physically, visually, or mentally, I have a couple of suggestions. Pray to your Maker that He would deliver you from your sin and find a brother who can hold you accountable. I would also like to recommend a book for you called Every Man s Battle by Stephen Arterburn and Fred Stoeker. Let me caution you, it is not for the faint of heart, but if you would like a deeper study on keeping youself holy and pure in an impure world, then this book will give you practical steps to achieve that goal. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, The God of my salvation, And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering.
