God is waiting and wants to help us with strength in time of need. Don't be afraid to pray and ask God for His strength to fall on you. When you are weak, weary or unready to stand, and unsure of what to ask, pray along with me. Lord I am tired. My energy is exhausted and my motivation is lagging. I am in need of you, I need your strength and your fresh touch to get back on track again. Your Word says the joy of the Lord is my strength. If that's true, then I need your joy to replace all the weary parts of my bones, my mind, my body and soul. I need your strength to say no when I am tempted to surrender. Don't let me get into a corner. Lord help me not to quit and find strength in that secret place of yours. You are my rock, and I run to you every day. I know that you will lift up my heavy arms, that you will fuel me for the tasks you've given me to do and that your joy will From the Editor: completely consume the weakness of my life and make me strong again. I want to fly like an eagle with you Lord. Renew my strength, Lord. Fill me with your power to overcome each obstacle. With you walking beside me, working through me, I can make it. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus name, Amen Now wasn't that easy? Pray that every day, and you will get out of the doldrums of feeling sorry that you have slowed down. Don't give the devil time to work on you. Be strong and know that God is stronger than anything you can imagine. God is Love and nothing can change that. Norma Karpiscak Whew! Is it September already?? Didn t we have a great VBS this year? In addition to making budget, we also managed to keep expenses down to less than what was projected. The only place we keep missing budget is the Major Repair and Replacement Fund. Please prayerfully consider accepting one of these positions: Treasurer or Finance Committee Chairperson. The Treasurer position requires approximately 3-4 hours a week of your time. The Finance Committee Chairperson works with the property and finance committees including chairing the monthly meeting of the committee. If you are interested in either of these positions, please contact Jess or Judy Ward at

Page 4 LEAVES FROM THE FOREST Report from the Finance Committee Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, our 2018 projects under the Major Repair and Replacement Program, namely, painting the church interior and replacing the carpet, have been completed. It is wonderful to see how we are maintaining our facilities to make our church one that glorifies God and is welcoming to newcomers and members alike. However, as the saying goes, We ain t done yet! The Finance and Property Committees are prioritizing additional projects for the coming years and they will be brought before the voters at the next annual meeting. The Major Repair and Replacement Program was established in order to put aside money for specific projects and not wait until we have a crisis. As you notice the butterflies overhead in our narthex, you are reminded that butterflies represent renewal and that is the purpose of the Major Repair and Replacement Fund. The butterflies in the narthex are there to remind us that the FOLC families, through their special offerings, are helping to renew our facilities. As our special offerings grow, so do the number of butterflies grow in the narthex. As you provide an offering for the Major Repair and Replacement Fund, another butterfly appears. If you have any questions about the Butterfly Program please see Ron Stamer or Trudy Ray. As summer vacation has come to an end for almost all school children, Sunday School, although it remained opened during most of the summer, we still want to celebrate Rally Day. Traditionally, this marked the reconvening of Sunday School. We will be having a pancake and egg breakfast in the "old" Sunday School room next to the food pantry. I am planning on having this on Sunday September 9th. I also want to thank so many people who continually give their time and donations to our Sunday School. Gerry Ellis, Lynn and Karen Postel, Sue and Skip Guthrie, Jodell Burgdorf, Marlene Kuhn and Lauren Brandimarto. I also want to thank Bonnie and Ed Wright and Lonnie Benmore for making sure the children have a healthier snack in Sunday School! They enjoy being able to pick out their favorite cereal. We are going to be studying from the Cross Exploration series over the next few months. This series will be covering the following: Jesus Welcomes the Children Jesus Gives the Great Commission Peter Preaches on Pentecost Paul Baptizes the Philippian Jailer Ananias Baptizes Saul John Tells People to Repent Jesus Forgives a Woman Jesus Appears to the Disciples Jesus Teaches about Forgiveness Jesus Gives the Lord s Supper The Emmaus Disciples See Jesus Jesus Touch Heals Jesus Teaches about an Unforgiving Servant Timothy Lives as God s Child Marlene Kuhn will be stepping in and teaching the first lesson on August 19th. Thank you Marlene! It always amazes me how much more I receive with Sunday School than what I give. No matter how much preparation is done, I end up receiving so much more back with my own growth in faith every single time. How great is that! Thank you Jesus! Caryl Kellerman

Page 6 LEAVES FROM THE FOREST LWML Grant Helps LHM Share the Gospel in the Middle East and North Africa by Chad Fix The Lutheran Layman July - August 2018 (page 19) Lutheran Hour Ministries is honored to receive a $100,000 grant from the Lutheran Women s Missionary League in support of its mission outreach efforts in the Middle East and North Africa. Jennifer Huecker, LWML s national vice president of Christian life, presented the grant check to LHM President & CEO Kurt Buchholz during LHM s weekly staff chapel service, May 24. The grant, Christian Hope through Mass Media in Egypt, was approved during last summer s LWML National Convention. The history of our two organizations has been intertwined since the LWML grew out of the work of the Lutheran Laymen s League more than 75 years ago, says Buchholz. We thank God for the LWML s partnership in this project and for continuing to walk together with us in His mission. The Middle East and North Africa region continues to experience tremendous turmoil and suffering. Because of that instability, the opportunity for individuals living in the region to hear the Gospel proclaimed is often limited at best. However, LHM now has a tremendous chance to reach people across more than 20 countries in the region through: A new variety television program developed in partnership with SAT-7 and based out of Egypt that dramatizes real-life problems and struggles for young people and their families; Continued holistic, refugee-relief programs that provide humanitarian assistance to Arabic-speaking individuals residing in camps in Lebanon, Northern Iraq, and other areas in This grant helps enable us to share our faith and the true love of Christ with people who urgently need to hear God s Word. the region where youth make up nearly 60 percent of people in the camps; An expanded social media presence that already connects with more than 380,000 people throughout the region. This grant helps enable us to share our faith and the true love of Christ with people who urgently need to hear God s Word, says Buchholz. Without mass media programming, many families and youth throughout the Middle East and North Africa may never have the opportunity to hear the message of faith and trust in God in their lives. We believe that we are called, equipped, and sent to share the love of Christ in the world, says Lois Engfehr, LHM grants manager. In spite of the continued turmoil in the region, we see great opportunity to expand our ministry efforts into those countries with large non- Christian populations. That s why we are so blessed by this partnership with LWML to help us carry out this lifechanging work. On August 12th, the FOLC Mite Offering was $ Your prayers and Mite offerings are used to fund Mission LWML grants. These Mighty Mites will keep the Good News of salvation flowing around the world. Jodell Burgdorf, LWML Chairperson LWML Sunday: October 14, 2018 The theme chosen for LWML Sunday is Our Rest in a Changing World and is based on Psalm 62:1-8. Watch for more information about the LWML and how to become involved in reaching others with the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

LEAVES FROM THE FOREST Page 7 QUILTING FOR CHARITY You know why I use the insert on the left to wish you a Happy Labor Day but do you know why I added the one of St. Matthew? For those of us who did not realize it, September 21 st is the day St. Matthew, one of Jesus apostles, is honored with a holiday. You may want to brush up on his life and his discipleship on his special day. Below are the photos of the dedication of the latest Habitat for Humanity home in Hernando County. On July 26 th, the Kamp Family received their house keys and a host of gifts from the community. This home was funded by Publix, who is very generous in their support of most Habitat Homes. You will notice that there are 10 people in the Kamp family. Kathy and I were there to witness and take part in the event. Quilting for Charity donated 9 quilts and blankets so that the parents and each of the children would have something to use to remember the day. May God bless them in their new home. Kamp 4 bedroom Habitat Home A table filled with gifts for the Kamps. ST. MATTHEW was overjoyed but expressed the need for blankets for the dolls to help her maintain their cleanliness. The following week I was able to deliver the flannel baby blankets shown below. What a joy to see their gratitude and happiness! Memory Care Director Hilda with doll. Doll blankets for Forest Oaks at Spring Hill baby dolls. So, what else has our group been doing? Besides some of our members doing some summer travelling, we have found time to meet every Monday at 1:00 in the Fellowship Hall to do some sewing, talking, praying and sharing snacks. (You are invited to join us, too.) We are preparing for the Fall Festival where we raise funds for Christmas gifts for homeless children who are residing in shelters at Christmas. We will have 3 tables of wares for sale this year. Some of our items are shown below and on the next page. These were completed since our last newsletter was published. The Kamp Family Our gifts to the Kamp family On August 2 nd, I had the pleasure of presenting 6 baby dolls to the director of the memory care unit of Forest Oaks at Spring Hill. The dolls were again donated by Dolls by Diane specifically to be used in enabling these patients to feel love and comfort in their daily lives. Dani s Afghans for the month LEAVES FROM THE FOREST I want to mention that not all of these ladies come on Monday. Some of them are home sewers and are graciously donating their talents to our cause(s). Also, not all of us do the same things to contribute. Each one of our group is important to our continuing work. (Please, forgive me if I should slight anyone or give credit to the wrong person for their efforts. God has been so gracious to us and I am so human with many human failings.) I cannot express fully the feelings of blessing felt by our group at this time. We lost a very special member of our group in April of this year. Patricia Hammond was filled with joy and love. We will miss her especially when all the snowbirds come back to Florida. Patti gave so much of herself to those she loved. We were blessed to have shared time with her. This past week, we received a most generous memorial from her family. It is such an unexpected blessing that we are prayerfully considering how to use it. We ask God to guide us in the direction of his will so that we can do as He would have us do. Thank you so much Bill and family. Most of all, thanks be to God! Thank you also for all the support Quilting for Charity receives on a regular basis. We feel a responsibility to do our very best for each of you and for our God. In gratitude, Amen. Karen UNTAPPED RESOURCES While taking photos of the earth, the space shuttle Columbia made a surprising discovery: Underneath the harsh Sahara Desert were 26 lakes, as well as miles of underground rivers. That region s inhabitants face tough conditions because those abundant resources haven t yet been tapped. Churches often suffer a similar problem. Congregations can t reach their full Godgiven potential unless people discover and use their gifts. When we tap into our talents, however, God promises that we will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail (Isaiah 58:11, NIV). Holy Cross Day: On September 14, many churches observe a festival variously called Exaltation of the Cross, Feast of the Glorious Cross, Triumph of the Cross or Holy Cross Day. According to legend, St. Helena, mother of Roman Emperor Constantine, while on pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 326, discovered the actual cross on which Jesus had been crucified. Although portions were taken to Rome and Constantinople, part was kept at the discovery site. By order of Helena and Constantine, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was built and dedicated there on September 13, 335. The following day, the portion of what was called the True Cross was brought outside so worshipers could pray before it. While Good Friday commemorates Jesus crucifixion, Holy Cross Day focuses on the cross itself as an instrument of cruel death, which God transformed into the means of eternal life.

LEAVES FROM THE FOREST Page 9 Memorial and Honor Gifts - through August 19, 2018 Praise God for blessing us through those He s placed in our lives! With Gifts in Memory and Gifts in Honor, you demonstrate your love and appreciation for someone, while contributing to drawing people to Christ and expanding the reach of the Gospel through various ministries at Forest Oaks. GIFTS IN MEMORY: A memorial gift is a meaningful way for you to celebrate the life of a dear one who has passed on, or express to their family how much they meant to you. We extend our deepest sympathy to families who have recently lost loved ones. Hoping all things that made your loved one a special gift from God will forever bless your life in beautiful memories. In Honor of: Contribution for: Given By: Gerry Ellis Future Maintenance Mr. & Mrs. Jesse Ward Anita & Hans Mutschler Unspecified Ms. Margot Hoyt We begin to approach a true understanding of what stewardship is when we realize that everything we have is a gift from God. We are His, and the things we have in our control are His resources entrusted to us. Basically, we are not owners of our material wealth, our time, our possessions, and talents, but rather, we are trustees of these earthly items for God. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 1 Timothy 6:7-8 (NKJV) Patriot Day is observed on September 11th in memory of the people who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. On that day, two hijacked airplanes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in NYC. A third hijacked aircraft crashed into the Pentagon near Washington, DC. It is believed that a fourth airplane was to crash into the White House, however, passengers aboard that plane tried to take control over the hijackers to prevent the attack. The plane ended up crashing in Pennsylvania. Innocent people lost their lives during this tragedy - many of them through heroic efforts trying to help others. Most Americans refer to this day as 9/11 or September 11 th and observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46am EST - the time of the first plane crashed into a tower on September 11, In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, the U.S. was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, some of those flags have disappeared. Our patriotism has pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize our solidarity. Pray for our nation, our leaders, for peace and safety, and for the freedom to spread the Good News of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
