The note was really nice and I immediately wrote her back and said we should talk on the phone. So, after New Year I received that call. Said she was not ignoring my letter but her latest great grandchild was born on New Year s Day and she just didn t have time to call before that. We spoke for more than 45 minutes. What a great conversation, although it was more like she spoke to me and I had very little time to speak to her. But that was the extent of it. Usually it is me who has no problem speaking, but she was overwhelming with the information that she relayed. Who is this person? Her name is Joyce, nee Bushmann and now for many years Schlectweg. I got to meet Joyce a long time ago as both of us rode the trolley car from the south Bronx to the last station on that line to Our Saviour s Lutheran Church and School. Joyce is four years younger than me, but that did not stop her from riding the trolley for about one hour to get to school. Her father was a MS Lutheran Pastor and had a church in upper Manhattan on the east side. Joyce and I hit it off well, me the little mother always made sure she got off at her stop. Mr. Sullivan the driver of the trolley also was a wonderful companion for many years as we traversed the tracks to school. Both parents, Pastor and Mrs. Bushmann and Joe and Emma Alfano enjoyed every day they met together outside of the church and within the church. Pastor Theodore H. Bushmann had a real German attitude and at least once a month he and Mrs. Dorothy Bushmann and my parents would travel to the German section of New York to hear and dance to beautiful music played by the owner of an establishment that served beer and good food. Naturally I had the baby sitting job while they were away for a few hours. Mom and Pastor Bushmann did most of the dancing. The family became very attached since the Bushmann s had no relatives living close by. One day Mrs. Bushmann was rushed to the hospital. She was expecting her third child and Joyce and Carol (continued on page 2) From the Editor: Have you been rummaging through your things and donating those no longer used or wanted to the Women s Guild sale? As this is the month when thoughts turn to love, please take time to reflect on the greatest love of all: God sacrificing His Only Son for you. Share His love with others. Your articles and photos make this newsletter, so them to folc25news@outlookcom. For those unable to , you may place it in the newsletter box behind the church office. The deadline for the March newsletter is February 17th.

2 Page 2 were left to Mom and me to entertain them while Mrs. Bushmann did her best to have a boy. He was born and got his Dad s name Theodore. Mom became the Godmother to Teddy and was very proud that she was asked to be that partner. Joyce and Bill married, he was her childhood sweetheart from church. Years passed by, and we only kept in touch by Christmas cards. The Bushmann s have all gone on to the church triumphant along with the Alfano s. I am sure they are still dancing in heaven to beautiful zither music, just like they heard years ago. LEAVES FROM THE FOREST What is nice is that conversations that we had many years ago become vivid again and we start to remember many trivial things that we haven t thought of in a long time. Thank God for these wonderful memories, they keep our minds alive thinking about what we will talk about the next time Joyce and Norma get on the telephone. No texting, just plain speaking. It is such a pleasure to hear a voice out of the blue. Blessings in this new year to all of you. Remember your past, but go forth boldly to proclaim Jesus as the light of the world. 4 Page 4 Forest Oaks Lutheran Church seeks to share the ministry of our congregation in many different ways each year. We have worship, Bible study, music, education, food pantry, and many other avenues to share God s love with people. It is our goal to continue these ministries and the new ones God will bless us with in coming years. One way of funding the new ministry opportunities God has promised to bless His people with is to establish an Endowment Fund. At this time, we are taking the time to remind individuals of this chance to help further the work of God s kingdom at Forest Oaks well into the future. Here is some information about this opportunity. The Permanent Endowment Fund of Forest Oaks Lutheran Church: To help further its mission, the church members established this endowment fund many years ago. The purpose of the fund is to provide an opportunity to make gifts over and above regular giving to help sustain and enhance future ministries. The fund balance has grown over the years to over $27,000. Only the interest income from the Endowment Fund is to be used for programs recommended by the Church Council and approved by a simple majority of those present at a voters meeting. The principal of the fund is permanent and is not to be spent in any way in LEAVES FROM THE FOREST order to provide earned income for ministry. What ways can I give to the Endowment Fund? Occasions of special thanks and praise to God offer opportunities to give to the Endowment. One can continue to support this ministry even after being safely home in heaven. Types of gifts include: Gifts of Money: A gift in honor of a friend or relative in observance of a special occasion or a gift made in memory of an individual are ways to share your blessings with others. Gifts of Property: Many types of personal property are appropriate gifts for the endowment such as real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other assets. Forest Oaks can arrange for acceptable gifts to be converted to cash and deposited into the Endowment Fund. Estate and Planned Gifts: The Endowment Fund can be included as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, Church Extension Fund account, or a retirement plan. One can also leave a bequest to the Endowment in a will or living trust. If you are interested in more detailed information on this subject, copies of the bylaws are available through the church office at If you have a specific question, the church office can also put you in touch with a member of the endowment committee. As you prayerfully consider your stewardship decisions, sometimes it can be difficult to decide where to designate your time, talent, and treasure. Our missions and needs often compete for your attention and dollars. Our Needy Family Fund provides limited assistance primarily to a member who may be going through a rough time. Many churches call such a fund the Pastor s Discretionary Fund. The fund was set up to be subsidized by money coming directly from the congregation, that is, the contribution must be specifically designated for the Needy Family Fund. When the fund s balance runs low, we make an appeal to the congregation asking everyone to consider making a donation specifically to the fund. Now is such a time. We need your help to replenish our Needy Family Fund. If you are so moved, please designate your contribution specifically to the Needy Family Fund. Thank you for your generosity. If you would like to view a sermon or share it with a friend, go to YouTube.com and search for Forest Oaks Lutheran and subscribe or go to our Forest Oaks Lutheran website. Check us out on Facebook, too.

5 At our January meeting, we discussed the completion of the parking lot resurfacing, which turned out great. In mid-march, once the weather warms up, we will be working on placing various plantings around the church property. Roy Martin is also getting bids on putting a concrete slab in for the sitting area across from the church doors. The party in celebration of Pastor Lehr s 60th year in the ministry will take place on February I want to thank all the members of the congregation who bought Christmas presents for the Sunday School children. They were all so very excited about their gifts! Thank you cards were made and placed on the wall outside of the Sunday School room. A couple of children wrote their own personal thank you card which is also there. Members of FOLC have continued to support the Sunday School throughout the year. I have LEAVES FROM THE FOREST Page 5 THIS MONTH ON CHURCH COUNCIL 3, 2019 following a special church service. Mary Hoskin has agreed to coordinate this event in Lonnie s absence. A sign-up sheet has been set up for the potluck. Norma Karpiscak and Marlene Kuhn have agreed to take over care of the Garden of Remembrance. The complete minutes of the meeting will be posted on the bulletin board as always. Cindy Braun, Congregation Secretary had members donate supplies like paper and pens, or subscriptions to children's Christian magazines, and others who donate food, and others who continue to donate their time every Sunday. It is with all their efforts that I am pleased to let you know that the Sunday School is growing! We now have 16 children listed in regular attendance, meaning that if everyone shows up, I have a very full room! I have added an additional table and more chairs to accommodate the growing class. On January 13, two of the children brought a friend with them to Sunday School, helping their friends to learn about the best gift of all-jesus! I am so pleased to see the children do this more and more. Caryl Kellerman The Women's Guild started out the New Year right by approving our budget for Within that budget, the Guild was able to support our own church home by donating $1, to the Future Maintenance Fund in honor of our retiring SunCoast Zone LWML President of 10 years, Darleen Keck. She also received honors at our meeting through the efforts of Jodell Burgdorf. Good job Darleen, thank you for all your dedication, time and effort. During Right to Life Sunday, we supported Redeeming Life Maternity Home in Sanford, Florida, by hosting speaker Kyle Lublin. She brought us up to date on their mission to give mothers and babies a chance at life. The Guild is sponsoring our second Baby Bottle Campaign, which is running thru February. So please, if you did not get your Baby Bottle to fill with your loose change, dollars or checks to support the right to life mission, pick one up at the Welcome Center. The Guild started the Campaign by donating $1, to Redeeming Life. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 6 th at 9:00am. There will be a business meeting, and appointment of a nominating Committee for Vice President, Secretary, and LWML Chairwoman. At 10:30am we invite all volunteers (men and women) to come help set up for our Annual Rummage Sale, which will be on Friday, February 8 th and Saturday February 9 th from 8am to 12 noon. A light lunch will be served to all volunteers. Meanwhile keep bringing in those rummage items. It is fundraisers like this that allows the Guild to be generous to various charities. Thank you, your President, Bonnie Wright

6 Page 6 LEAVES FROM THE FOREST QUILTING FOR CHARITY It is the second month of 2019! Already! Our Christmas decorations are securely packed away for another year. Yet, we are reflecting on the beauty of the Birth of our Savior and the love and joy we felt just last month. God is so good to us! To bring you up to date on the activities of late December, I had the pleasure of presenting a dozen of our baby quilts and several stuffed animal toys to the Hernando Sheriff. They are to be used to give comfort to children in distress that the deputies might encounter in their line of duty. After our 2 weeks hiatus, we have been busy getting back to our usual routine. Barb worked hard and gave us two quilt tops. Kathy brought one in as well. (The ladies made good use of their leisure time.) One of the quilts is now completed and is shown below. We are still working on Barb s creations. Kathy s Patriotic Quilt Twelve Comfort Quilts for Kids On Sheriff s Facebook Page January is a busy month for the quilters birthday-wise. We celebrated birthdays for Lil and Marcy, Shirley and Alma (a home quilter). Unfortunately Marcy and Alma were unable to join us for the celebration but we appreciate them and wish them many blessings on their special day and throughout the entire year ahead. Lil and Shirley celebrate! Stuffed Animal Toys Last month I told you of some upcoming events but as yet we have not been told when the Habitat homes will be dedicated. We have one quilt ready, made especially for the first Habitat recipient. We included the colors specifically requested by the homeowner. Barb constructed the quilt top from some special fabric we had on hand. The photo doesn t show the true beauty of the quilt. If you ever are at a loss for something to do, our group of ladies would like to extend an invitation to you. Please, join us on Monday afternoons in the Fellowship Hall between 1:00 and 4:00. You can see what we do and take part in the fun and friendship. No specific skills are required. We welcome your company. Have a blessed Valentine s Day! Karen Barb s Habitat Quilt

7 Life South: Keep your calendar open for the 17th of February when we will have our blood drive at church. Remember if you have any questions if you can donate, please come and talk to the staff and they will answer any questions. Your donation can be responsible for saving lives. A Celebration of Pastor Lehr for his 60 years of service to our Lord will be Sunday, February 3 rd. Following the church service, we are having a potluck lunch. Please sign up at the Welcome Center to compliment our menu for this event. Many of you have shared many years with Pastor and Jan Lehr and know they were always there to give you Christian support, but have been away for over a year. In addition to the celebration of Pastor s LEAVES FROM THE FOREST Page 7 ministry, we have an opportunity to thank both of them for their many years of service. It will be a joy to celebrate with them in our appreciation of the many years they have both contributed. We celebrate Pastor Lehr for being the founder of our congregation and the shepherd who has led his many lambs over the years. Jan was the backbone to our musical programs throughout the years and we thank her for that. Without Jan, I am not sure we would have our bell ministry. It will be a joy to celebrate with them. Food Pantry: The holidays were busy and we were able to furnish gifts to every child that was a client at the pantry. Due to the schedule of the holidays, we were able to take the holidays off. It was a well received rest. This did not last very long. Since the first of the year, we have been extremely busy. We thank all of you for your generosity that enables us to continue helping those less fortunate. Want to join the team or in need of a phone call or visit from the team? Please call Marcy Stortzum, My church is composed of people like me. We make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I bring them. My church will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a church with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with those things. Therefore, with the help of God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all the things I want my church to be!

Set Free Many live their lives in peril, Raised unnurtured, and in need, Impoverished in soul and spirit, Wrong in attitude and deed. The secular world disdains in restraint; Sees willful acts as nature s norm. Neither fearing a dark hereafter, Nor an endtime final storm. So unbelievers who persist in error, Stumbling toward dread Sheol s door, Without repentance and salvation Could suffer in darkness forevermore.
