First he was the youngest of all Jesse s son s. When God sent Samuel to call out and anoint one of the sons of Jesse as the new king, Samuel looked at all the older, stronger, better looking brothers. Father Jesse didn t even show Samuel his son David. But it seemed God had chosen David, not by looks or stature. God looked on the heart. We sometimes, yeah, most of the time, look at appearance, or each others profile or pedigree when we try to identify our leaders or even our followers. God looks on what is going on in our hearts. Are they going in faith and hope? Are they being transformed by the renewing spirit of Christ? Are they larger in the capacity for compassion and grace toward others? Do we remember that even leaders, like David don t always get it right? Leaders and followers still need forgiveness and grace. If any of that describes you, you just might have leadership qualities. We are happy to welcome Jeff Rodman to the staff of the Adel UMC. Jeff began worshipping with us on August 17. You will see him frequently now, as he is our Family Ministries Director. We are glad to have him on board with the ministry of the church, and look forward to his ideas and leadership. Wednesday Evening Meals are in the planning phase. We may be changing things up just a bit, but we hope to have a launch date to you very soon. We know this is a popular ministry in the church, and thank you for your patience. Boomers and Silent Generation Coffee Group The Senior Devotional (Boomers and Silent Generation) Group is excited for the September outing. September 5th is when we will meet to travel to the Des Moines Botanical Center. 10 a.m. Des Moines Botanical Center Tropical and temperate gardens make this an oasis in the heart of downtown Des Moines. The Botanical Garden a place where we can learn about fascinating plants, hone our gardening skills or just immerse ourselves in beautiful gardens. There are always several, friendly people to help explain the plants we might not recognize. We will eat at the Trevis Café on site. Praying for those who have had illness/surgery Please be in prayer for healing for our members who have had some challenges with their health or have had surgery recently. Wilma Mitchell recently had a simple angioplasty done at Iowa Methodist Hospital. She returned for another surgery on August 27. That surgery was a success, and she is recovering. Please keep her and her doctors in your prayers. Ike Long has recently had a regular stay at Blank, and we have news he may heading back to Colorado soon for special treatment there. Do you know of someone we should add to the prayer list? Give us a call. As always, we keep in prayer those of our brothers and sisters who are homebound, have limited ability to get out, or living in assisted care: Pricie Warren, Irene Chapman, Virginia Kreager, Marguerite Gowin, Marguerite Ganoe, Jane Stine, Mildred Kirk, Helen Stangl, Bonnelle Smith, Pat Whisner, Lena (Delores) Jenkins, Louis Kirk and Alice Couch. If you know of anyone we are missing on this list, please call the church office. We welcome your information and want to pray for those needing comfort and healing. Sincere Sympathy We extend our sympathy to the family of Linda Borne. Linda passed from her earthly life into eternal life on August 2, Pastor John conducted her service on August 5, Linda will be remembered by many members of the Adel UMC as a tireless volunteer with a quick smile and encouraging word. We pray for comfort as the family grieves her loss. We extend our sympathy to Tim Sweet. Tim s mom, Mary Jean Sweet passed away recently. We pray for comfort and peace as he and his family grieve her loss. July Church Council Those in attendance were Doris Henderson, Pastor John, Al Manning, Terry Otis, Wilma Mitchell, Pat Torpy, Tammie Seaholm. June minutes were approved as read. Old Business: The Ice Cream Social served 160, which is up from last year. All proceeds were given to the youth mission trip in New Business: Work Areas: Finance Report - Terry Otis. Apportionments are current. Trustee Report - Jan Tetrick. They are happy with projects they ve done. The wall colors in the church need refreshing by paint. Endowment Committee - No report. Lay Leader - Wilma Mitchell. No report. SPRC Report - Kris Manning. Pastor taking vacation July 24 until August 4. Evangelism - Pastor John. Having salt and pepper shakers, flossers and handi-wipes on the west side of the church during the Sweet Corn Festival. Youth - No report. Missions - No report. UMW - No report. Memorial - Doris Henderson. No report. Christian Ed - Tammie Seaholm Study will begin August 27 th. It will be a 6 week study with Beth Moore. VBS reached out to 100 kids. The Thursday night program was a great time in our church. Rally Day may be in conjunction with the study Pastor John wants to do. Tammie and Pastor John are still meeting about the Safe Sanctuary policy. Preschool - No report. Worship - No report. In the Community The Adel Rotary Club is raising funds for Operation Warm that will provide winter coats to school children in the Dallas County area. A $16 donation will provide a single coat for a child for winter. Gloves, scarves and mittens are also needed. If interested in making any donation to this cause please bring a cash donation to the Dallas County News office. Donations may also be mailed to Operation Warm c/o Nancy Itani, 813 Main Street, Adel, IA All donations are greatly appreciated! Pastor s Report -July 14 worship services will be done by Off the Cuff. July 21 will be cowboy church. He will do a 31 week study called The Story, beginning September 8. Sunday sermons, Sunday school classes and small groups will all study along as we do this as a whole church event. There is some music that follows The Story. The new software, ACS, did import old files even though we first thought we could not. Meeting closed in prayer. Next meeting will be September 11 at 7:00 pm. 4 Good News For God s People Page 4 Church Wide Mission Trip Cherokee Nation Oklahoma! June 21-26, 2015 We are excited to go on a church-wide mission trip! Every single one of you are invited (though some age restrictions apply). We need to have your reservation by SEPTEMBER 15, We will begin meeting as a group on the 2nd Sunday of each month, beginning in October. October 12 will be the first meeting, from 6:00 7:00 p.m. All youth, from 5th grade through high school are invited to attend, provided they are accompanied by an adult family member or responsible adult chaperone. Children under 5th grade will not be coming on this trip but watch for camping/mission opportunities for these young ones in 2015! Every member, adult and youth, will be responsible for a nonrefundable $ deposit. Families (3-5 people) are required to deposit $250. We need this deposit on or before September 14. As a group, we will plan fundraisers to try to raise the remaining funds for the trip. Depending on the success of the fundraisers, individuals may need to cover other expenses. September 14 Good News For God s People Food Pantry Page 9 Do you have a passion for helping the hungry? If so, the Good Samaritan Food Pantry Board is looking for you! They meet quarterly and oversee the running of the Good Samaritan Food Pantry in Adel. If you have any questions or are interested in applying for the board, please call Michelle at Also, we are in need of spaghetti sauce, chunky soups, toothpaste and canned fruits such as pineapple, etc. If you have been blessed with an abundance of fresh produce this year, please consider donating it to the food pantry. Our clients love it all! Thank you everyone for your continued support of the Good Samaritan Food Pantry! Your excess of garden produce is much appreciated by the clients using the food pantry. Thanks so much for sharing. Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser Belgian Waffle Breakfast on October 25th. Join us, beginning at 7 a.m. in fellowship hall. Operation Christmas Child We are pleased to be a drop-off point for Operation Christmas Child again this fall. Many of you have already experienced the loving feelings as you fill boxes of small gifts and lots of hope for children all over the world. Please consider picking up small items to pack a box of love this year. Speak to Stefanie Wilderdyke for more information and/or how you can help! Each person who is a blessing, receives blessings. 5 Good News For God s People Page 8 Introduction to Prayer Sermon Series Our worship in September will focus on prayer. What is prayer and why is it important? Many people consider prayer an exercise in which we present our needs to God in a petition. It s like the old saying there will be prayers in schools as long as there are tests. We all pray when we find ourselves in difficult situations, but this, however, is not the biblical definition of praying. Jesus told his followers just before giving them the model prayer that God already knows their needs before they pray... For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. Matt: 6:8 NKJV Or, as The Message puts it: This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. September 7, we will explore Jesus relationship to God in his prayer life. Luke 11:1-4 September 14, we consider what we do when it seems that God is absent. Luke 11:5-8 September 21, we will look at God s challenging timing in answering our prayers. Exodus 3:1-2, 5-10 September 28, we will close the series by inviting us all to invest more deeply in our prayer life. Ps 63:1-8 Each week will include a look in to how Hollywood reflects or illumines our inadequacies, understandings and hopes about prayer. I hope you will not miss and invite someone to join you on this journey to different prayer life together. Blessings, John Good News For God s People Page 5 AMA The Adel Ministerial Association is a collective effort by the churches and community members to assist those who have difficulty with the day to day living expenses all of us have. Pastor John is treasurer of this association. We can report the funds are alarmingly low right now. Your help would be much appreciated. Prov. 19:17. He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, and He will repay him for his good deed. Prov. 22:9 He who is generous will be blessed, for he gives some of his food to the poor. Deuteronomy 15:7. If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in any of the towns of the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand to your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks. Backpack Ministry Thanks to everyone for their support of the backpack ministry. We gave out backpacks and basic supplies for 50+ children in the ADM school system. What a blessing!
