1 Holy Cross / Christ Church / Monarto Third Sunday Of Epiphany 21st January 2018 Receiving the gift of God s love through Jesus and bringing hope to the community Reaching out with the Love of Jesus that All may Know, Worship & Grow in Christ MARK 1:14-20: After his baptism and after John s arrest, Jesus began his own earthly ministry. He preached from the context that the Kingdom is entered through repentance and believing the gospel. The call of the four disciples brings home to us the truth that the unbelieving world is outside the Kingdom, like fish, which are there to be netted in. The gospel needs therefore to be worked to bring people in.

This is what God wants you to do 1 Thess. 5:16-1 Prayer of the Day Almighty and eternal God, look in mercy on our weakness, and stretch out your mighty hand to help and protect us. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please pray for... Give thanks that even in challenging times Jesus is there with us. Pray for an equal distribution of this world s good, knowing that God has provided for everyone s need, but not for everyone s greed. Pray that those who despair of their ability to cope receive hope like refreshing water. Give thanks for those who see children as precious gifts and protect and nurture them. Thomas Foods Fire Meeting at Church of Christ, Seventh Street Tues 30th Jan 7.30 pm You are invited to a meeting called by the Ministers Fraternal and M/B Inter-Church Council to discuss and plan the way forward to help support the people and families directly affected by the fire at Thomas Foods on 3rd January. At this meeting an update will be given of the situation and then ideas will be discussed how the Christian community can respond to the needs of people affected. NATIONAL WEEKEND OF PRAYER FOR SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY Friday 9th February to Sunday 11th February On Tuesday 8 May 2018 the Federal Government will announce whether it will uphold the current funding provided for the National School Chaplaincy Programme (NSCP). Currently the NSCP funds more than 3000 school chaplains in Australia (called Pastoral Care Workers in SA), who play a vital role in school and local communities, providing invaluable social, emotional and spiritual support to children, young people and their families. Happy Birthday Matilda Schwarzer 23rd January AGM 25th February 11.30am I urge you to join hundreds of thousands of Christians across Australia by including a short time of prayer in each of your services that weekend (9-11 Feb), for the continuation of funding for school chaplaincy in Australia. Mowing lawns at Holy Cross for 2018 We re asking all churches, religious organisations and communities of faith to pull together to ensure the lifeline of chaplaincy is always available for our children in Australian schools and the best place to start is on our knees! Pray for our school chaplains that their vital service can continue. Pray for our politicians who are currently deciding if the current funding model for chaplaincy will be extended. Pray for strong supportive connections between the church and school chaplains. But ultimately, pray for God s will to be done in this circumstance. At present people will need to book a key out through the church office. Bring A Can Or Two For Teen Challenge. At the last Leadership meeting we agreed to have a special drive for Teen Challenge asking people to bring a can or two (meals in a can) to distribute to those affected by the Thomas Food fire earlier in January. Teen Challenge have already had an increased demand for support. Please bring a can or two to the next two Sundays, 28th Jan & 4th Feb (Harvest Thanksgiving) to place in containers at the front of the church. This is a very practical and real way Christ Church can show it's support to the families struggling as a result of the fire. We will assess further assistance after the Inter-Church Council Meeting on the 30th January (see page 3), which will include opportunities for retiring offerings.
