6 New Home for Salisbury Korean UMC On Sunday, July 2 nd, the congregations of Zion UMC on Zion Road and Salisbury Korean UMC, formally of Hobbs Road, met together for the first time to celebrate Zion as the new spiritual home for Salisbury Korean. The reason for this is because over the last several years, Salisbury Korean has struggled due to declining membership and the local economy. Realizing that it was facing a tremendous financial crisis with a fairly large mortgage on that property, it was decided by the congregation that they would have to sell the property in order to satisfy the mortgage holder. Subsequently, the property was put on the market and within a few weeks several offers from other congregations and private companies put in offers. Fortunately, the best offer was accepted by the trustees and settlement for the property will happen on July 10 th. The congregation, realizing it needed a new home met with me to discuss their options. While attending a monthly district clergy meeting, Rev. Jung and Rev. Sally Dolch began having conversations about possibly coming to Zion. Under Pastor Sally s leadership, she worked with her trustees and church leadership to agree to welcome SKUMC to their home and share their home with them. On July 2 nd, Bishop Peggy Johnson and myself attended worship and celebrated Holy Communion with both congregations, followed by a delicious meal of both American and Korean dishes. Over one hundred people were in attendance. We thank God for these two churches, proving that when there is a need, God s Spirit shows up and good things happen! We praise God for the people of Zion for their radical hospitality and for Salisbury Korean s faithfulness and perseverance. To God be the Glory! Great things He has done! DS Rev. Fred Duncan
7 Trinity s 2017 ASP Mission Team The commissioning of Trinity s 2017 ASP mission team on June 11 th. 58 youth and 24 adults traveled to Cocke County, TN on June 24 and returned on July 1 - Being the Hands and Feet of Jesus Christ! 8 Antioch Angels Go To Kentucky... For the 9 th consecutive year, The Antioch Angel Corps ventured to southeastern Kentucky to do God s work. This year, in conjunction with Lower Beech Fork UMC, the Angels put a new roof and new front door on a mobile home for a community member in need. As well they repaired another roof and searched for the source of a leak at yet another residence. We also conducted Wed night service and communion there and were treated to a magnificent carry in dinner. While part of the group was busy constructing, the other part of the team, in conjunction with Evarts Congregational Methodist Church, provided a Vacation Bible School for approximately 30 community children and nearly as many adult participants. As well, we continue to expand our children s outreach by driving up in the hollers to distribute toys to children and gift cards to teens living in humble circumstances. We all gathered at Evarts church for a Thur. night meal and celebration where the children presented their newly learned songs of worship. As always the blessings we received were greater than the blessings we bestowed. Our thanks to our Kentucky church family in Asher and Evarts and we look forward to seeing you again next June. 27 Clinical Pastoral Education The Pastoral Care Department at Peninsula Regional Medical Center is pleased to offer a Fall class in Clinical Pastoral Education. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is clinical education for ministers, seminarians and lay pastoral leaders to develop pastoral care skills. Attention is given to meeting the spiritual needs of patients, families, staff and CPE members. This program is a minimum of 400 hours of supervised learning per unit of training. The Fall program unit is from August 4 through December 1, 2017, with 6 hours of seminar weekly. Three hundred clinical patient visitation hours are required. The educational approach used in CPE is described as action-reflection-action. Students provide pastoral care to patients, family members and staff, and then use their experiences for reflection and learning. Students participate in seminars that provide direct supervision, peer interaction, or accountability for one s professional functioning. While seminary courses provide the basis for the theology of pastoral care, CPE provides the clinical component of theological education by emphasizing learning by doing. Peninsula Regional Medical Center is affiliated with Community Care Chaplains of Arizona, and is a satellite training center, under direction of Training Supervisor Rev. Geoff Tio, accredited by the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy, (CPSP). Classes are under the instruction of Supervisor-in- Training, Rev. Dr. Helen Lockwood. More information about Clinical Pastoral Education is available through the Pastoral Care Department at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, by calling , or joyce.lecates@peninsula.org. Applications are being taken now. Deadline for application is July 14. Class size is limited to 6. Tuition for the full unit, 16 week class is $400 plus textbook fees. Application fee is $25 (non refundable) which will be applied to tuition if accepted into the program. If you would like to receive the weekly Conference Newsletter, please let Charlotte in the Salisbury District Office know your address. It s a blessing to stay connected!! LIKE us on Facebook!
